Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
First topic message reminder :
Jayawardene does bugger all but scratch around for 18 balls looking horribly out of form, then comes down the track and smacks the bowler straight over his head for a six. Class!
Ball again. Jesus umpires, get on with it

Broad's gone as well, Nathan McCullum with another catch, dropped a few, taken a few as well.

I shall +1 this.
We're seeing quite a pattern develop in this tournament from England's batting...

All out for 169.
NZ require 170 from 144 to knock England out.

Innings has rather imploded these last few overs. They were on for at least 190 , but perhaps they got a bit greedy and slightly overreached.
Lot of hits with more elevation than distance.
..and all out 169.
Disappointing. But we'll have to see how NZ bat in these conditions.

169 all out. Miserable from the middle and lower order. Will be difficult to defend this as well - Broad's out of form, Bresnan is expecting to be a dad at any moment, no Swann, and Root and Bopara are part-time.
But we still have James Anderson. With James, there's hope.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Alfie, Wheelie Bin has the final say on the tactics. It is the tactics that are flawed (and have been throughout the tournament) that have led to England being thoroughly outclassed by a third rate international team in this match.
Surely it is not simply a coincidence that England have been unbeaten in home ODI series for 4-5 years, then as soon as Wheelie Bin takes charge they get spanked against the Kiwis and outplayed in this tournament.
His tactics stink, and he needs to go ASAP for the good of England ODI cricket.

The tactics were fine. Buttler, Morgan and Bopara all failing when given a good platform are the problem.

Well we're going to need early wickets
And the tactics are fine. With these tactics we at least get defendable scores. Be nice if Morgan/Buttler (and this time Bopara) actually did their jobs for once

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
I shouldn't really try to make any points out of this , as these reduced games are a bit of a raffle anyway.
But : will those who have been saying throughout the season that England would do better if the likes of Trott and Bell would hit out , get out and leave the hitters plenty of overs to do their thing at least concede there may be some possible problems with that approach ?
Just asking

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Rubbish, they were not fine at all. A top 4 of Cook, Bell, Trott & Root in a 24 over match is asking for trouble. Wheelie Bin should have dropped at least one of the "hitters" in to the top 4 to inject some urgency from the outset.

Do people just type out their tactics and Trott/Bell/Cook rants beforehand, and post them regardless of what actually happens?

If anyone blames the top order for this- then they havent watched whats happened..
Bell and trott both hit out.(all i can ask of them in a 24 over game). Cook did and got through it with a decent SR.
Root ok went a bit slow- but still about a 100 SR.
We then didnt get a bop mogs or butler slog fest1!! One of them at least should have stepped up!

And then the hitters can make 15, 14 and 9.
Meanwhile, Englands best batsman was Cook by a mile who makes a 39 ball 50 without slogging.

I've had a think about it. England will win. Early wickets will force NZ to succumb to the pressure, quite a bit of cloud cover as well to assist the seamers. #englandalltheway #comeonengland #thegreatescape

Morgan and Buttler have combined to make 51 runs in this tournament. But its the top orders fault clearly.

Further to that last post, Cook, Bell and Trott all have individual scores above that combined total in this tournament.
Blame the guys who make the runs, great logic.

Game still on anyway. Frankly I suspect 169 won't be enough , but it certainly isn't impossible for England to defend it...there is a bit in this for the bowlers.
They will need to bowl well of course. And field well.

We have a great shot at this.. 169 maybe a bit short-(30 short)
But that doesnt mean our bolwers cant step up.. Which they certainly can!!

And further to the tactical points (and I am delighted to see most people on here are agreed the plan adopted was perfectly reasonable)
: this abridged game is an exception in a fifty over tournament. Giles should and will be judged on how he handles his team throughout the series/season.
Kiwi openers all at sea against Jimmy in this over...surviving somehow.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Early days. But NZ slipping behind the run rate.
McCullum will be the key.
Jimmy gets the first wicket. Ronchi still not firing for NZ.

Luke Ronchi played an atrocious innings and hold out for 2 of 12, and now the big wicket of Martin Guptill as well. Ross Taylor joining Kane Williamson with NZ in serious trouble at 14-2.
