Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
First topic message reminder :
Jayawardene does bugger all but scratch around for 18 balls looking horribly out of form, then comes down the track and smacks the bowler straight over his head for a six. Class!
Ball again. Jesus umpires, get on with it

Keep him safe for Ashes and let him sponge clean himself until ashes finishes
Lolz that actually made me laugh.
I think England's caution with Swann does indicate where they feel their priorities lie - fair enough maybe, but more understandable if it was his previously troublesome elbow. As far as I understand the current niggle is a calf strain which has not exactly been a recurring problem, and is a minimal relapse risk for an spin bowler who won't spend much time in the outfield.
As things stand, it's either more serious than England are letting on (which is possible - don't want to give the Aussies a boost etc.) or it is just a niggle and they're being hyper-careful (in which case he won't play the as yet hypothetical final).
Finn reversed it plenty in India, so not sure the theory about Bresnan reversing it holds much. I think it's more likely a combination of his batting skills (which is stupid) and the thought that he is more effective on slow wickets than Finn (which has merit, but is IMO misplaced) that has given him the nod so far. I also think he is probably more of a death bowling option than Finn.

Based on how Bresnan has bowled at the death so far, I'm better death bowling option than him. Seems to be intent on feeding the batsmen length

Agree, Bresnan can't be allowed to continue at the death.

yes that's good news for england as SA side composition is more suited to handle shortened T20 type gamesOlly wrote:Some good news, weather should be fine throughout today

So Cook decides to bowl first at the Oval, brave decision.
Bresnan and Swann are out, Finn and Tredwell deputise.
SA are without 4 heavyweights in Steyn, Morkel, Kalis and Smith so England mus consider themselves strong favourites.

250 would be a score that if SA could get to...would test England under the pressure of elimination.
It is always a big advantage to have runs on the board and let the threat of elimination work on the opponent.
and when chasing Morgan and Butler need to deliver their dues now......haven't done anything meaningful in the tournament so far.
In fact I have never seen Butler do anything meaningful...and Morgan it seems left his electric form back at the IPL

No Steyn, its over already! Must be noted though that Chris Morris has played really well for a debutant, Tsotsobe has come back from a horrid first game to bowl well. JP has been a very able spinner. McLaren has probably been our top player. But Kleinveldt is the weak link for my money.

Ya it is a difficult decision from cook. But SA pace attack without steyn seems bit weak than their opposition..first spell from Jimmy would be impotant..

The weather's good, the selection is right, we've won the toss, and we're at home. I'm looking for a very, very good result from England today.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Rory Kleinveldt was named Steyn's replacement. In the first game against India he was hapless against all indian batsman and went for 81 runs in his full quota. In the last two match played at Oval score was easily chased, and that too the pace attack of SA is weak. So from here I see a victory for England but still their slow batting from top order and lower middle order's failure to accelerate is a problem. A score between 280-290 is better to defend.

Finn rightly comes back to take his due place, Tredwell deputizing for the injured Swann!. I Really don't like the notion that Finn could be a replacement for a worse option.liverbnz wrote:So Cook decides to bowl first at the Oval, brave decision.

Early wicket from Anderson enhances England's advantage, they had a boost before the toss when Dale Steyn was ruled out. And England have picked a better team as well with Finn in it.

AB de Villiers is holding himself back. First Robin Peterson was promoted to 3, and Faf du Plessis in at 4.

england removed one weak link in Bresnan.....and Finn makes a differnce.
SA has a lot of depth in their batting.......with Miller, ABDV and JPD as 3 gamechangers still to come

Peterson has done much of the scoring. He has scored 27 of the 32 runs that South Africa have scored so far. He's living a bit dangerously in this over from Broad.

38/2 after 9 overs. England might have to be a wary of Peterson - he's very quick out of the blocks.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Think some Finn fans are being a bit unfair to Bresnan. He has played his part in getting into this semi.
Yes he got hammered at the death the other night , and his bowling has been a bit variable . But he was good against Australia , took important wickets against NZ...I am quite happy to see Finn picked today , reckon this pitch might suit him ; but let us not go overboard rubbishing Bresnan. He might have enjoyed a bit of early movement here too...

Agree with you alfie. He can bat also lower down the order. Every day is not the same. Bit unfortunate for him.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Run rate is healthy enough , early wickets aside...
England could do with grabbing another one here or they might still end up chasing quite lot of runs.
Will be interesting to see how the spinners go on this.

Peterson what a mug!!!! Superb delivery from Jimmy. Important though, our bowlers continue to keep the pressure up on the SA Batsman. JA will finish in a bit and we will save his last few overs till the end. Spin soon i recon.

South Africa are 3 down, Robin Peterson's chancy but enterprising innings over. AB getting a good first ball from Jimmy Anderson. South Africa 45-3.
