Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
First topic message reminder :
Jayawardene does bugger all but scratch around for 18 balls looking horribly out of form, then comes down the track and smacks the bowler straight over his head for a six. Class!
Ball again. Jesus umpires, get on with it

De Villers is who there relying on now SA. Get him out early, and then it will take a lot for us to lose this match.

It might seem a risk , but I would almost bowl Jimmy right through here.
He could completely wreck this innings. Certainly he must continue for now ...de Villiers in the cross hairs now...

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Anderson showing once again that when it's swinging there's no one better.
The other bowlers need to back him up a bit more now.
Finn's extra pace did for Amla, but since then the bowling from the other end has been variable.
However I don't think there are many demons in this pitch; anything under 250 should be a comfortable chase.

Du Plessis and Duminy can both play a long game if necessary.

Variable is putting kindly I think Mike. At the least building some pressure would help.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Du Plessis certainly did the innings saving thing in the Tests in Australia last season.
ODIs a bit different but he may well play a similar role here.
Agree with Mike there are runs in this once Anderson is seen off...but if he can get one of these before he finishes...I would give him one more , just save the last two.

Would you bowl Anderson out while hes hot?
Interesting question for Cook. Light at the end of the innings, but hes not going for any and is a genuine threat. Plus its swinging now to boot.

I'd be tempted to give Anderson one more. Keep him back a couple for the PP or death, but one more wicket...

We shouldn't bowl Anderson out, he may still be needed at the death, or to clean up the tail. Let the other 4 or 5 bowlers deal with it now.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Of course Bresnan played his part, particularly against Australia more with the bat. But I don't think he merited a place ahead of Finn even that game. Finn's a quality bowler, a better one than Bresnan is. Bresnan could certainly come into the mix in certain combinations, or as first reserve, but not a head of Finn, who has been consistently good for more than a year and a half. Finn does go for a few now and then, yet it has to be noted that Bresnan's economy rate is 5.4 and Finn's 4.64.alfie wrote:Think some Finn fans are being a bit unfair to Bresnan. He has played his part in getting into this semi.
Yes he got hammered at the death the other night , and his bowling has been a bit variable . But he was good against Australia , took important wickets against NZ...I am quite happy to see Finn picked today , reckon this pitch might suit him ; but let us not go overboard rubbishing Bresnan. He might have enjoyed a bit of early movement here too...

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
It is an old question in ODIs...do you worry about the end of an innings , or go for the kill when you are on top ?
As I say , I'd go one more , but the absence of a fourth true fast bowler may discourage Cook.
Broad gets de Villiers ! Definitely go for the kill now , surely ? Couple more and there won't even be a fiftieth over to worry about...

Broad gets de Villiers... South Africa in disarray. Duminy to come in, so certainly keep Anderson on for at least one more now.

As much as you say keep Jimmy for the death, if we get Duminy or FDP, SA might not get to the death.

Jimmy off the field I think so might be 1 over, but not sure I agree if hes on permanantly.

Good decision by SA to review that.
Time for a bit of spin.

Looked out on first glance, and confirmed out by Hawk-Eye. Shame Cook didn't review it. I hope we're not looking back on that in a few hours as the moment that cost us.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
The merits of " going for the throat" are often understated , though it depends a bit on who both teams have in reserve.
In this case , if Anderson were to take one more wicket now , SA would be in danger of being bowled out. And if he didn't , but still bowled , say , three overs for six or seven runs ; how much would be lost by Bopara bowling two or three late overs to tailenders ? Given that Anderson often goes for up to ten per over t the death anyway...
Tredwell strikes ! Doesn't seem to matter what Cook does.

Duminy's rather tortured stay comes to an end. Chops a rather innocuous delivery onto his stumps.
Du Plessis looks in reasonable touch, and there's still Miller and McLaren to come, but...
