Not signed yet though, with Arsenal you never trust them to finalise a deal until the player's stepped out onto the pitch in their shirt.

It's more of a done deal than Higuain, I expect it'll be announced tonight/tomorrow morning. Whereas Higuain could be next summer knowing Arsenal.Fernando wrote:Neither is Paulinho with Spurs
Not sure on Wenger's managerial skills any more, he's had the likes of Ramsey, Gibbs, Sagna, Diaby, Walcott for years and they've barely improved as players. AVB in one season turned Bale from very good to world-class.

AVB turned a team that finished 4th into a team that finished 5th despite having the best player in the league.

I count that 7-4 Spurs.
In your opinion maybe. How can you say Paulinho is better then Arteta for example? Arteta seasoned Prem CM who has attempted and completed the most passes in the Prem last season and Paulinho, who didnt exactly sign the world alight in the ConFed.
I wouldnt have said Man U had the best starting XI in the Prem last season but they romped it.

Personally id go
Lloris > Chesney
Walker = Sagna - Both awful for different reasons
Dawson = Mertesacker - Mertesacker gets a hard time from people despite being apart of the 2nd best defensive in the league
Vertonghen > Koscielny
Naughton < Gibbs
Parker/Sandro < Arteta
Dembele < Wilshere
Holtby < Cazorla
Lennon = Walcott - Both head down and run
Bale > Podolski
Defoe > Giroud

AVB took over that 4th placed team and lost Modric, VDV, Kranjcar, Ledley King, Bassong and Corluka. He added Lloris, Vertonghen, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Dempsey and Holtby. He was handicapped by his Board selling his midfield linchpin. And injuries crippled Spurs last year too.
Debatable as to whether Bale is the best player in the league as well, I'd have RVP and Suarez over him at least. Wilshere too.

Is it really though?
AVB failed to take Spurs into the Champions League last year, when there was a Chelsea side in absolute turmoil manager wise, and with a ridiculous schedule of games. Also he blew a sizeable points lead over one of the universally accepted worse Arsenal sides in years.
Oh and he hardly set the world on fire at Chelsea.

Petit, Vieira, Henry, Anelka, Overmars, Campbell, Gilberto, Fabregas, Pires, Ljungberg and Wilshere. There's a theme there - most of them have long since left the club. Wenger has lost the ability to take a player in raw form and transform him into a world-beater. Look at Oxlade-Chamberlain - hardly improved at all the last 18months. Look at Walcott, barely different to when he was 20. Same can be said for Ramsey, Gibbs, Sczczesny. No young players develop at Arsenal these days. That's not down to the players, that's down to the manager and his coaching staff.
Meanwhile, Spurs under AVB have already seen huge improvements in Caulker, Bale, Vertonghen, Dawson and Naughton. Too early for any other names yet, but give AVB time. He's only had one year.

He's got a much better record then AVB anyway. You missed off a certain Mr Van Persie aswell.
Dawson has always been good just injury prone. Bale was World Class anyway and has been before AVB took over. Vertonghen was quality before he joined Spurs and Naughton??? (meh)
4th would be good season for AVB next season, whether he can acheive it?

Paulinho hasnt played English football yet so I cant give him that one. It also depends how you pair them up. Bale was considered one of the top five players in the world and couldnt get them 4th remember, Arsenal must have a strong collective. Giroud scored as many in the League in his first season, got more assists and scored more overall compared to Defoe so arguably wins that too.

I missed off the improved performance and increased longevity of messrs Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Adams, Bould and Keown as well, but you can't list every Arsenal player from pre-2006
Dawson just had his best ever season for Spurs, Bale was not world class, he was very good but inconsistent, Vertonghen was quality but is even better now, and Naughton has gone from sub-standard to okay.
I hate Spurs with a passion, but I can see AVB improving the players at his disposal rather than buying new players in. Wenger is buying players in because he longer has the magic recipe to turn poachers like Giroud into 25-goal strikers, or Oxlade-Chamberlains into John Barneses.

Possibly true, but that doesn't change the fact that Naughton got a good run of games for Spurs this season and is the reason that Benoit Assou-Ekotto is now being moved on (reportedly). He's a tidy LB, and he did come on a bit this season.
I think Paulinho will take the Premier League by storm. Anyone who's seen him play knows that with the right CM partner he takes some stopping. If Dembele can stay fit, those two could be a nightmare to face off against.
AVB's player project this season should be Lewis Holtby. Put him at AM where he's best, and get him playing, scoring and setting up goals. Him + Bale could really spark Spurs to big things.

Your first sentence completely baffles me.
Dawson continued to prove to me that he isnt a top quality defender but just a middling decent one. Bale was pretty world class. I cant really see why AVB is set to improve players majestically and Wenger isnt either. When did he stop being any good with younger players? Hes bringing in players because, as has been constantly reported and surprisingly ignored, they had certain structural problems with their money after the stadium.
They have been waiting for a time when it was really there to spend, and now they are quite clearly shopping in a higher market. I also think Wenger is buying cos he wants to as well, which is not really a criticism worth pointing out because managers often do.
Giroud should not be written off either, he adapted pretty well pretty quickly.
Im more laughing at the factual way Spurs are now en route to be better than a Man United side you feel are toppling out of the top four.

The Man Utd comment was a wum remark, nobody bit until now
Apart from Wilshere - who I'd argue has developed himself, due to Wenger's propensity to bring him back too soon after injury - name the last Arsenal player Wenger developed? Properly developed?
RVP? Took him 8 years to make him a consistent finisher. Fabregas? Besides those two, it's a long time since Wenger took a player from youth to full international superstar. He used to do it all the time, but it's a rare thing now. Sanogo is the guy he needs to bring to the fore and make great - if he can't do it, there's the proof.
AVB isn't a fair comparison, as he's only had the one season. Compare Wenger to Moyes at Everton. He brought on Baines, Fellaini, Coleman, Cahill, Jagielka, Distin. Barkley. He's been doing it. Chris Hughton has done it at Norwich. Martinez at Wigan. It's Wenger who's lost the knack.

I didnt think you were on Nick's level
Im not sure thats true or fair. Firstly, its unfair to Wigan, Millwall, Sheff United and a myriad of clubs Distin played at before. Barkley hasnt made steps into the first team proper yet. He brought them on but he didnt develop them. Its changing the goal posts a bit if Wilshere doesnt count as being developed by Wenger but those can be brought on by Moyes. And it wasnt me who compared him to AVB, you said he would be doing it whilst Wenger buys.
Anyway, Koscielny, Sczesney, Walcott, Song, Gibbs at the least. Nasri counts by the latter criteria. Sagna had a large period as one of the best right backs in the league. Even blooming Diaby was a wonderful find talent-wise, his body just hasnt hacked it.
Hughton has done it minimally, Martinez did it very well with some but got them relegated.

Some bizarre commentary here. Van Persie was mainly held back due to his catalogue of injuries not poor management from Wenger. I'd argue that Wenger had developed Nasri, Adebayor and Song as well during the last eight years, but they've all gone off the boil to different degrees since they've left Arsenal. Of the current squad, Koscielny's come on leaps and bounds, from a player who had only played one year of top level French level football, to someone who's been tracked by Bayern and Barcelona. Theo Walcott's frustrating as hell, but I believe only him, Mata, van Persie and Bale got double figures for both assists and goals in the Premier League. Not bad company to keep for a man with no 'footballing brain'.
Don't see how Moyes can take some much credit for Distin and Barkley. Distin came to Everton having played over 150 Premier games, and had won the FA Cup, so was already well established, and as good as prospect as Barkley may be, he isn't established in the Everton side, so its far too early to be calling him a success

I think actually RVP's ADHD held him back far more than his injuries. He didn't have the temperament needed aged 21 to knuckle down.
Not sure Nasri did develop at Arsenal, I never rated him and still don't. Adebayor had one good season, but never really did it. Song was doing well but moved to Barca B for some strange reason. Koscielny is getting there, but he's no Martin Keown.
Distin's been phenomenal for Moyes, played his best stuff of his entire career for him. That could be maturity, experience, desire, who knows. But Moyes took a good CB and made him perform to a much higher standard. Barkley is a developing kid, but Moyes can definitely take credit for where he's got to thus far. I believe he also got Wayne Rooney off on the right track?

It might have been more his injuries that made his temperament a problem, and the fact he had players far better ahead of him.
Nasri was clearly a wonderful player for Arsenal, and is a wonderfully talented player lost in a sea of Man City transfer money where you buy everyone and then treat them poorly. Adebayor had two decent seasons and went for huge money.
This is of course a constantly changing argument. Moyes seems to be able to take all the credit for doing bits but Wenger cant. Rooney is Moyes' work now for this argument? Is that the Rooney that is past it or the Rooney that played for a little while under him and was ready to go from youth work? Moyes hasnt really done anything for Barkley, especially if Wenger is considered not to have done much for Wilshere.
He took a centre back in Distin who had been playing very good football for Portsmouth and had played fantastically for City. Im not saying it wasnt a good buy, but he hasnt developed him. I have no problem with the others listed, but the criteria for Moyes' developmental success is far easier than that of Wenger's in your marking system.

Tomato tomato, potato potato
Rooney staying, I did call it. I like how Moyes didn't actually say 'he wants to stay', more 'he's our player and he's staying our player'. Hardly a resounding plea for mercy from Wayne there.

Watford sign Daniel Pudil - Probably the first of many of the players they had on loan last season. If they can get them signed on and add a few more, they will be a real handle next season.
Oldham have signed Charlie McDonald from Leyton Orient - Always been a solid goalscorer at this level.
Cheltenham have signed Matt Richards from Shrewsbury - Former Brighton player, will never forget his winning Penalty to beat Man City in the Carling Cup in 2008!!!
