How would you describe him as a full back? Solid defensively ala Ashley Cole or just a wingback ala Alba etc?
Olly wrote:Norwich are close to signing Martin Olsson (the LB one) from Blackburn.
Yeah I believe so. You'll be getting a decent fullback in the guy.
We need to sell someone to bring in funds to complete the Jay Spearing transfer from Liverpool.
Plus Matt Kilgallon can play at LB, and we still have Givet on the books and young Adam Henley.

Put it this way, he is better going forwards than he is going back!
A very good athlete, good engine on the lad and is very fast. Final delivery sometimes lacking and as I say better attacking than defending, but is a decent player, still around 22/23 so plenty of time to learn the defensive side of the game, plus he has been playing in the Sweden first 11 whilst as a second tier player, so that is decent endorsement as well

He's at best 3rd choice target behind bender/gustavo.

You know what I mean. Spurs, Everton & Newcastle are clubs in and around that 5-8 position with the quality of their squads. We had a bad year last year due to Europe & Injuries. Our squad achieved 5th the season before. I just think McCarthy is a player who would fit nicely at a club outside the top 4 and challenging for european places and those three clubs fit the bill in my opinion. That's all.
It was tongue in cheek, I promise! Although, you may be a little behind on those, in the new mesh of clubs that chase the top seven which is a bonkers amount of anyone but Hull, Palace and Cardiff id imagine

Everyone laughed when I said Newcastle were average and overachieving in a year when PL standards dropped!
Then they nearly got relegated, in truth they are somewhere in between - 10th is realistic for them.
With Kinnear on board they may well flirt with relegation again.

I'd say we are in that 8-10 position currently. Anyone, outside the top 4, who loses four or five first team players for months on end will be flirting with danger, add in european fixtures and you will be battling to the last day for survival. I'd expect us to be challenging Liverpool/WBA in that region this season with a few quality Kinnear signings

I can't imagine you are happy with a man who apart from a disaterous spell managing yourself has been out of top level football for over a decade.
Add to that hes deluded, claims he signed half your current players when they signed after he left, can't pronounce half your players names, has a go at the fans regularly etc etc...

That's a kick in the teeth for Liverpool.
I've said for ages that history and reputation get you nothing in modern football compared to a chequebook and european football and this re-affirms it for me.

I doubt it, he'd have had to be looking for a home for his partner and baby, not to mention starting the Spanish lessons. He's left it too late. One more year, Spurs finish 5th, off he goes to Madrid, Spurs fans can't complain and the club still pockets £50m.

I reckon Tonev is going to be a great addition. I have no clue on Bacuna though
Villa will probably struggle against the drop, but I think they'll stay up. There are at least three worst teams than them, who just came up from the Championship.

Bacuna is a dutch midfielder.
I think we'll do alot better this season, even if Benteke goes.
Hope the new boys settle in quickly.
Think we'll finish above the 3 new teams, WBA(they've warmed our spot as top midlands side).
Fulham
Norwich
Sunderland(maybe Newcastle).
Ok so people might say, thats to many teams we'll finish above, but I think 10-13thish is where we'll end up.

Not a chance, even with your signings and us losing Lukaku, we have the better squad. I can see you finishing above the three promoted teams, and Sunderland, possibly Stoke. That's it though, and if you lose Benteke, then it's a close contest with the bottom three.
Fulham have signed a quality keeper, a quality CB, and Derek Boateng.
Norwich have signed van Wolfswinkel, and are looking to sign Fer, Toivonen and Alderweireld. You can't compete with that

Well if Benteke goes, we'll be taking Long off you, his pace with Gabby would be quality.
Than using some more of the money for another striker.
Nah i'm confident 10-13th is where we'll end up.
We'll be alot more organised i feel this season.
Cant wait for it now.

Not sure if this has been commented on but Arsenal are having a typically dire transfer windown. Signing an unheard of french-african youngster on a free but letting a £4.4m Spain international slip.........
Wenger needs to take a long hard look at himself.

Considering Wenger was supposedly willing to pay £20m for Villa last summer, it's shocking Arsenal were nowhere near Villa this time round. What a player to have at your club, imagine him charging down the left flank with the ball at his foot. And now they'll have to make do with Lukas Podolski

All a matter of opinion Azzy my man.
Long is actually a top bloke.
Met him in brum couple of years ago.
Was happy to have a chat etc.
We spoke about Ireland to.
Although we could well be bottom at the end of august looking at our first 3 fixtures.

Aye, I like opinions, especially when they agree with my own
Shane-o-Mac is a great guy, agreed. He's snogged my mum at both the last two end of season events at the Albion, Adrian Chiles told him to get his hands off her at the last one. Andy Johnson, former Albion midfielder, then told Shane to 'get off my Catwoman'. Surreal.

Apparently Newcastle have agreed a £2.5m fee for Jeroen Zoet from PSV. He is to be the understudy to Tim Krul. More like Ashley will sell Krul to A.C Milan or whoever is interested.
Not sure why people are upset at missing out on David Villa. He`s not the same player he was post his broken leg, hence why he couldn't even get in the Barca side. Age and injury catching up on him now which is unfortunate because he was quite brilliant in his prime. Podolski was hardly dreadful, scored goals and had plenty of assists, will only improve in this league. Wenger needs to wake up though, Arsenal missing out on available players now and if anything the lack of activity means the damage is already done.
Anyone know who Al Fayed is selling Fulham to?

Preston sign Kevin Davies from Bolton - Surely he is too good for league one? Wasn't he playing for England a year or so ago
Northampton sign Darren Carter from Cheltenham - Used to be a goal machine for West Brom and Preston.

Got to correct you Nick, Darren Carter scored 4 goals in 53 games for Albion and 4 in 94 for Preston, hardly prolific, although he was a midfielder who didn't get forward much

Its wired Olsson really impressed me in the Prem, however in the games i saw him in the Championship he looked crap. One thing i said a lot about Olsson is he commits a lot of fouls. However he could be a decent signing for Norwich.

His head dropped a little after the relegation, and as above says he looked better in the Prem than he did the Championship.
Hopefully a move back to the top flight will see him focus a little more.

This Deulofeu kid is supposed to be their brightest talent, interesting they would let him leave if true. Never rated that Olsson, could not defend and basically just went forward to cover his defensive frailties. Again, amazed at Norwich and these signings. RVW & possibly Alder & Fer. Signings look like their using Norwich as a stepping stone to greater things but in the short term what great signings.

I'm happy enough with Olsson, will provide good LB competition with Garrido and if there is one thing Chris Hughton should know about its defending at full back so he can help him improve there.

Re: 2013 Summer Transfer Window Thread ......Continued
Yeah, actually finished 5th. Problem with us was Ashley then not taking advantage of our success and we were stagnant during the next summer. We then had horrific injuries and Europe to contend with. I don't think other teams will experience what we did because they will push on and go to the next level. I think Swansea is a good example. Achieved Europe like us but aren't just sitting back, there buying multiple players from Spain and Bony. That's ambition, something Ashley did not have and paid the consequences. We then got worried in January, panick bought and only just survived.
Norwich should do well next season if they pull off these signings and I would not be worried about too many signing coming in, also they've got great resale value too, unlike Evertons signings of Alcaraz or Kone.
