Theres a part of me that wants to sign Downing just so we can get Carroll and Downing for £20m combined, about £35m less than Liverpool paid for them. It would just make me chuckle, alongside having Joey who they misused and Diame who Dalglish wanted to sign but then got sacked.
We should probably put in a £2m bid for Borini and £4m for Allen

£5m for Downing. I would take that, cheap. Remy could move up top and Downing on the left to replace Obertan or Gutierrez. Downing is obviously hated in this country and not rated but give him some love and the confidence will come back. Rodgers playing him left back was just painful to watch. We also need some english players but he'll probably end up at Spurs.

I don't mind Downing, he's a decent player but I'd stop there I think.

Exactly, he's decent but can produce moments of very good wing play.......something that is non-existent with Gutierrez or Obertan. We don't have a good winger and for £5m, I see that as a good deal. Yeah, people don't rate him and others just jump on the bandwagon but I'd definitely take a gamble on him.

I find it comical that when he and Young both left United and Liverpool fans were arguing over who had the better player. Who'd have thought they'd both turn out to be garbage

Is quite funny but I actually still do rate Ashley Young. Slightly injury prone and lightweight but at his best he's a good player and the better of the two without doubt. He was superb for England in the lead up to the Euro's but then Roy decided that we should defend instead of attack and then fan's turned on Young because he was ineffective in comparison to Milner in the art of defending as a winger. I think he lost alot of confidence and then suffered a miserable injury plagued season.
That's another problem is that British teams can't attract the top echelon of player anymore because they go to Barcelona, Madrid or Munich. They then decide to look domestically at players who impress with lower teams in the division and Young & Downing were the obvious choices. When they move to the big club and have to step up, they inevitably don't look as good as what they did previously before the move. Big fish in small pond's don't make good players when they step up in quality. Example - Young/Downing/Adam/Dempsey etc. I would also put Michu in that catergory. I also wait to see how effective Bale is at Madrid if he make the step.

A fit Ashley Young is a force to be reckoned with. But sadly, I doubt we'll ever see a truly fully fit Young again. At least, not for England.
Albion have had a loan offer for Scott Sinclair accepted by Man City. Deal to be completed this week, Kalou looks like he might join us (we had an offer accepted for him too), things are looking up for us

Not me, Sinclair was Swansea's driving force. Sadly, his game may have completely disappeared after a season off duty - but if we can get that old Scott Sinclair back, he could be one of the signings of the summer.

Dyer's easy to stop, get the full-back tight on him, he either falls over or moves infield where his pace is countered by bodies. Sinclair has actual skill to go with his pace (or did have), and so can hurt you from anywhere. Certainly did against Albion! 1 goal, 1 assist, frightening to play against. Dyer's scored against us, but it was a tap in late in the game.

Watch Premiership Years 2011/12 and that will clearly show you Sinclair is a lot better than Dyer.
That said i am huge fan of Dyer, acted like a little baby in the cup final though.

I agree on Dyer/Sinclair with GSC
Whenever we played Swansea in the Championship/Prem I always thought Dyer was more of a threat, but Sinclair got the accolades cos he got the goals (most of which were pens)
That said I don't think Sinclair is a bad player

I've never been a big fan of Sinclair, always thought he was overrated cos he'd been a Chelsea lad.
Kalou seems to have come out and said he's happy in France, whilst Newcastle have apparently distanced themselves from Downing.
I still rate Ashley Young, unfairly written off after a poor showing for a Poopie England side in the Euros. Always thought he linked very well with Rooney, which combined with injuries might explain why last year wasnt as good for him.

I think that does a gross injustice to Ashley Young who's been many times the player Downing has since they joined those respective sides. Don't think Downing has once looked as threatening as Young on even an average day. Young's goals to games ratio is almost twice as good as Downing's and, for England, he has 7 in 29 whereas Downing hasn't even got 1 in 34.
Still, he's not terrible, and £5m is a fair price and would be a good signing for Newcastle IMO.

£5m for Downing does represent good value. I'd say Ashley Young is still worth £12m. But factor in wages, and over a 4 year deal, Downing stands to be paid £10m - so £15m for Downing, at £3.75m per season, does seem excessive to me.

Sinclair was Swansea's driving force????? He was excellent in the championship, had a mediocre first season in the prem and then Mancini showed how far out of his depth he was and we all had a chuckle and snapped his hand off for 6 million quid. Dyer gets through far more work than Sinclair ever did, its just a shame he has a very limited if not non existance cross.....but given the choice of Sinclair or Dyer I take Dyer everday of the week and twice on sundays.

Re: 2013 Summer Transfer Window Thread....Continued.....CONTINUED
Sinclair was Swansea's driving force in the Championship and their star player but his effectiveness didn't just stop once they were promoted. He scored goals in the EPL and did Swansea a good job in their first year. Not sure you can deny that fact or say he was outplayed by Dyer that season, hence why he got the move and Dyer did not. I don't like comparing players when one has been frozen out and unable to showcase his ability, while the other excels for their club and their exploits fresh in everyone's minds. I think there both good players, however Sinclair edges it in terms of goal threat, which is the essential attribute needed for an attacking player at the end of the day.

All smoke and mirrors. "Bids" for Higuain, Suarez and co, smoke and mirrors, they won't splash the cash, just make it look like they were willing, then end up with the usual come the end of the window...

I must have missed the bit where Ribery did anything ever.

Re: 2013 Summer Transfer Window Thread....Continued.....CONTINUED
sinclair and young remind me of each other while a dyer is more orthodox winger. both sinclair and young are cut in wingers who look to get a shot off more than a cross, when it pays off it pays big with a goal giving them much more headlines than a usual winger who might create a goal/chance with a good cross.
the thing is they waste a hell of a lot more chances doing this as well, and any half decent defender knows exactly what there main threat is. young for us (united) has been terribly inconsistent and when he's bad he's really bad wasting chance after chance. dyer is more similar to a valencia more consistent but doesn't grab the headlines as much

I think all wingers are seen as inconsistent, I can't think of many who that hasn't dogged them as a criticism, Ronaldo perhaps, but even Ronaldo got that earlier in his career as a more orthodox winger.

ronaldo when peaked was consistant probably the most in the league. valencia had been up untill last season , but even then he was consistent just consistently poor!. it is the natural of the player that they will have peaks and dips in their form coming up against different full backs, but some of these players are not just inconsistent in form but also what they do on the pitch meaning that there team mates have a tougher time reading them. Valencia whether on form or not you know exactly what he's trying to do and as a result is the easier winger to play with, unlike someone like a nani who i dont think knows what he himself is doing let alone his team mates

Rooney's shoulder injury doesn't prevent him driving either.
Wenger will probably still spend nothing after they've qualified for the Champions League when more mountains of cash enter the club's finances. Truly ridiculous for Arsenal and it's fans. The squad isn't good enough, regardless of what Wenger says. Had to laugh when Arteta said, 'we won't finish 16 points behind Man U this season, it will be closer'. What does that mean? It will be 15 or 14 points behind instead? Basically admitting defeat before a ball has been kicked and that your not going to compete for the title whatsoever. Where's the ambition or drive at this club from manager or players? Even if the Suarez deal finally is completed, Arsenal don't come near the top 3.
As for Ribery being nominated.... I think he's basically been rewarded for his tracking back and improvement in teamwork, that's all I can think of. Shocker.

@Lastdamnation - how on earth can you say Ribery is the best player at Munich last season in reply to my post. Ribery showcased a different side to his game, along with Robben actually, of caring about the team and not the individual. Ribery's tracking back and work rate was superb, especially when Alaba bombed forward. That's the only aspect of his game which impressed me last year, other than that it was a normal season for Ribery with 10 Bundesliga goals.

The sad thing is none of the Bayern players have any reason to want to leave at the moment. They're the best side in the world and they don't need to leave. The only player I can imagine going is Kroos because there's a lot of competition for his places now and they can't/won't play Thiago, Schweinsteiger, Martinez and Kroos.
I say "at the moment" because there's already rumours of rifts developing between the players and the manager. I think I posted a link the other day on this page to one of Honigstein's articles.

Always said following on from Heynckes was a tough job, even if your Pep Guardiola. Benitez following on from Mourinho at Inter was the same after they won the treble in Italy. Going into a side that is not broke and trying to put your stamp of authority upon it and changing personnel is almost certainly going to upset the dynamic. They already have too many attacking midfielders and not enough strikers for starters, therefore there is an imbalance and too much competition. Dortmund winning 4-2 in the German Cup was also not the greatest of starts, especially against their biggest rival.
