Gabriel 'Angel' Ascarate is a good player in the Scott Hastings mould. Great tackler, has a good pass and very aware of his team-mates whereabouts out on the field. Big fella too . I suspect identified by St Sean of Lineen as he seems to be his type of centre.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
If I remember correctly when "Barry" (getting used to the lingo around here) singed for Glasgow last year, Sean Lineen said he was primarily an outside centre but can cover the back 3 as well.
But as we've only seen him come to life this season on the wing, who knows...? Fingers crossed.
On another note, I'm off to Scotstoun for the first time this Sunday. Gonna try out the new standing terraces as all seats are sold out. Doesn't bother me in the slightest as I'm just happy the Weege are selling out enough to build extra capacity.
But as we've only seen him come to life this season on the wing, who knows...? Fingers crossed.

Welcome, SMT - loved that piece of McLaren commentary - a Campese try, from what I remember?A Simply Mesmeric Try wrote:If I remember correctly when "Barry" (getting used to the lingo around here) singed for Glasgow last year, Sean Lineen said he was primarily an outside centre but can cover the back 3 as well.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Thanks GC! It indeed was McLaren on Campese.
I did some googling and found this article from the Scotsman's website. This proves one thing. My memory ain't so bad. As for Barry at 13? We shall see on Sunday.
Quick question to my Glaswegian brethren; can I have a guestimate on the cost of a taxi from GQS train station to Scotstoun? I realise there are trains going from Glasgow Central to Scotstounhill, but that might making making kick off a tight one with the toing and froing...

Welcome Mesmeric! I really like that name BTW!
I think all trains to Scotdtoun are actually from Queen Street lower level rather than Central. A return ticket to Scotstounhill is £3, with a five minute walk at the stadium end. Just FYI, like.
Enjoy yourself on Sunday - I'd recommend the wee van at the east corner of the north stand for the best beer.

Train I usually get to the games stops at Central station (low level). Though later on at night its not direct, so that may be the case on Sunday's.IanBru wrote:Welcome Mesmeric! I really like that name BTW!

TJ and Sam Hill fit to start, Fets drops to the bench and Alex Brown comes in for Rimmer. Surprised to see Mooney starting ahead of Sturge.

Thoughts:
Keen to get Sam Hill back in the side after his recovery, so Shoey shifts out to 13, and Whitts out to 14 (altho I remain to ve convinced that he is a winger)
Ben Moon preferred to Brett Sturgess, giving the young lad some experience
TJ recovered from his knock
Alex Brown () in for the injured Carl Rimmer on the bench
Naqer dropped from the bench to make way for Fets

Doesn't the No1 bus go pretty close. Last time I went I had a couple of beers in the west end and then got a taxi, less than a tenner to do that.Dorothy_Mantooth wrote:Train I usually get to the games stops at Central station (low level). As I would think Glasgow main weakness is McGuigan at 13, what is this chap Jason Shoemark like? If he is a strong runner we may be in trouble but is he mobile? if not, barry may be able to exploit some space.

Hope Barry's had his wheatabix!
Cheers lads for the info! We'll have to see how much time I have to spare. If I have some, train. If not, a tenner for a taxi is worth it, especially for my first Warriors game. I will definitely seek out this wee van in the NE corner.cakeordeath wrote:Doesn't the No1 bus go pretty close. Glasgow Warriors can gain the upper hand in the battle to qualify from Heineken Cup Pool 2 with victory over Exeter Chiefs on Sunday.
The Warriors welcome the Chiefs to Scotstoun off the back of a hefty defeat to reigning champions and pool-topping Toulon.
However, trailing 34-0 at half-time, the PRO12 leaders did manage to bring back a morale-boosting bonus-point from their trip to France after scoring four second-half tries.
Glasgow coach Gregor Townsend has called for his players to be on their mettle from the off against Exeter, stating: "We learned a great deal last weekend in Toulon, about ourselves and the level of rugby we face in this competition.
"The display from our players after half-time was excellent but there is still an underlying feeling in our group of frustration and determination to put things right. It is very important that we rise up and deliver an eighty-minute performance on Sunday."
Argentina centre Gabriel Ascarate will make his home debut for Glasgow Warriors in this encounter. Sean Maitland, Tommy Seymour and DTH van der Merwe make up the back three for Glasgow, with Ascarate partnering Byron McGuigan at centre.
Up front, Josh Strauss continues at number eight, with Rob Harley and Tyrone Holmes on either flank as the Warriors bid to make it five straight home wins against English opposition in the Heineken Cup.
The Chiefs enjoyed a record-breaking 44-29 victory on Saturday over a Cardiff Blues side boasting a plethora of British and Irish Lions tourists, securing a bonus-point within half an hour.
With Toulon expected to take top spot in their stride, the battle between the Warriors and the Chiefs will be crucial to determine the knockout stage qualifiers.
Coach Rob Baxter knows that, should his side overcome Glasgow on Sunday, they will be set in a very commanding position in the pool, up to nine points ahead of their rivals from North of the border.
Although victorious last time out, the Chiefs boss has tinkered with his winning formula with Ben Moon coming in for his first start at loosehead prop in place of Brett Sturgess.
Young centre Sam Hill returns in the midfield to partner Jason Shoemark - which in turn means Ian Whitten is shunted back onto the wing with Fetu'u Vainikolo dropping to the bench.
"We know it will be a tough game and we know there will be some reaction from them to the Toulon game because Glasgow have been going really well in the Rabo this season," Baxter said.

Simply Mesmeric,
reckon you will fit right in on here and into the Warrior Nation in general. Welcome on board.
You can get to Scotstounhill from Q St Low Level but may need to change at Hyndland. Bus is the no 4 (not 1 or 4A)- £1.90 from Bath St heading West (). ASBO was obviously schieze faced and was ripped off royally if he coughed £12 to Scotstoun. I reckon £8 should do it. Beers in the Scout Hall pre and post game usually work - throw in a Mr Singh's curry - perfect. Band playing last time were loud rubbish bawbags, but this time we are promised an improvement (not too difficult tbh).
Enjoy the match.

Thanks Schiziod and everyone else for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to Sunday. Bringing "Mrs Mesmeric" as well. She has decided she likes rugby which is no bad thing.

I'll be in an Ogilvie Hunting kilt (if it's not being dry-cleaned for my sister's wedding next weekend...). If not, then I dunno. I may wear my 08/09 Embra top but may get laughed at... Either way, I'll be sure to say hi and/or put you in a taxi if/when you fall over. I'm nice like that.

Fear not lads, that top isn't one of those 1872 Cup specials. It's just the home top from that year (Visser's debut season i think). *This one.* The Embra tops in recent seasons haven't been much to shout about. Well, not true, lots to shout about just nothing to drop one's jaw in awe... The new macron BT Sport tops are pretty nice on both sides of the country. I like the Charles Rennie McIntosh inspired Warriors top. May pick one up...
Or I could buy and new Embra top and a new Warriors top, slice them down the middle, sow the left Glasgow side to the right Embra side and Bob's your auntie's lover, the new personalised Scotland change strip. Who's with me?

I think that given the players who are likely to comprise the Scotland squad, it would have to be the entire Glasgow shirt, with perhaps an Edinburgh sleeve sewn on.A Simply Mesmeric Try wrote:Fear not lads, that top isn't one of those 1872 Cup specials. I'm feeling very confident about today. The starting XV is beginning to look like a first choice; obviously with Dunbar and in the centres, possibly Fozzy and the Mighty Coo in the pack.I don't think we will defend as ineptly as Cardiff did in the first 40 and we can attack a whole lot better than the Blues did in the second 40.
Glasgow to win WHATEVER IT TAKES
Off message time amigos Just about to head out to face Upminster vets. Oops phone call from Bigson; his game is off so he'll come to watch me. This will be the first time since he's become a decent player that he's stood watching , aside from ten minutes at the end of his game. So, no pressure there. Scratch side, no training, positions will be allocated once we see who we've got, probably 9 flankers 3 props and a one legged stand off. What could go wrong?

I was out in the city centre this morning, initially worrying that wearing wellies would make me look like a complete tw@t. As it turned out, there was so much water around that I felt more than justified!

Great result for us. Toulon are not happy travellers and so it has proved.
Surely increases the likelihood of a doubt in Toulon's mind about winningin Glasgow?

I don't think it is a good result. The conditions today certainly didn't favour the type of rugby they played against us last week. Well done to Cardiff though. It puts us under pressure to get a BPW tomorrow.TJ wrote:Is it? Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Don't really see how this is bad for Glasgow, it maybe reduces the chance of coming second but definitely increases the chance of coming top. It maybe also makes last weeks result look worse, but apart from that i don't think it does any harm. Regardless of todays result a win over exeter would be vital or else its the end of the heineken cup chances, cardiff beating Toulon makes no difference to that. A win over exeter now means we will be on either 5 or 6 points with Toulon on 6, cardiff on 5 and exeter on 5 or 6, in other words the group will be wide open. If Toulon had won today we would be probably 4 points behind them and still about level with exeter, i don't think that's a better position.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Guys, guys, none of this matters. We were working on the assumption that Toulon would probably be unbeaten and comfortably qualified by the time they visit Scotstoun and the only hope we would have would be if we beat the other two home and away. Now if we win our next four we can win the group by beating Toulon at home. Call me a dreamer but I think we can do that.
Of course if we lose tomorrow it's pretty much all over.
I shall be watching for updates and cursing those eejits at Sky.
JUst got back...we won!!!Thought I had a thoroughly anonymous game. Collected more bumps and bruises than in the whole season so far. Feel slightly concussed but that may be the Port and Grouse in the changing room or the Abbots ale after. Upminster played a good game true to the spirit if rugby, hard and fair. I love this game.

Heard Brian Moore on five live this morning casting his eye over the fixtures for today - firmly backing Exeter - very positive over the coaching setup there now and highlighting the increased chance of getting out of the group now Toulon have lost. Not so much on Glasgow's chances, in fact he didn't even mention them in the interview!
