It was only a matter of time before Rennie get injured again, i can understand why he wasn't given a contract extension.

Would love to buy tickets for the games in Newcastle just now, but not eligible. So looks as if I'll have to wait till September. Unless anyone knows a way to become eligible for the early batch?
Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
It's open for public sale in .. Sept? I think. You'd need to check.

I consider myself part of the wider rugby community!
Wonder if I could find and English club to adopt me?

I didn't even think of that. Is it only English clubs that are given the allocations right now? So i can't vote for/against independence but at least this

Wouldn't worry about getting tickets, think there will be lots available due to the high prices for them.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Just noticed a very strange article in the Edinburgh Evening News
The question was obviously asked by Bill Lothian - a staunch Yes man - but what the hell is he on about? Why would the BT Murrayfield Stadium need to change it's name if it was a Yes vote?? British Telecom is a company, not a country!
Scottish Rugby Chief Executive Mark Dodson has sidestepped whether a contingency plan exists for a further re-naming of Murrayfield in the event of a Yes vote in September’s independence referendum.
“That’s not for me to comment about. As far as we are concerned we are here to talk about what’s in actual play,” said Dodson when asked by the Evening News at the announcement that BT had acquired stadium naming rights for £20 million over four years.

Bit odd, I agree. One assumes that British Telecom will still be operating in the Utopian Kingdom of Scotland

Eh, RDW, please ban yourself for talking about independence!
But yeah, utter tosh to think BT would change the stadium name to "the Stadium formely known as BT Murrayfield Stadium"
Or "Rest of the UK Telecom Murrayfield stadium"

I don't suppose that was in the contract agreed between the SRU and BT -
tattie - this is rugby related chat really!
Clause 13.3.4.5 - should Scotland become an Independent country we agree to throw away the 20 million quid and lose the naming rights, because it would be entirely inappropriate for a company with British in the name to have anything to do with an Independent Scotland.

As far as I am aware, UKofS would still remain part of the British Isles - it would be far-fetched indeed to imagine that Emperor Eck could manage some kind of geographical isolation of land mass

In all seriousness, despite their pungent odour due to the lack of soap, their horrible nasal accent, their likelihood to knife you, their love of frying marsbars, their drain on the economy due to welfare handouts, their love fest with religious hatred in football, thier in-ability to design a city centre not full of one way systems and thier 'contirbution' to Scottish culture by bringing us River City, I'd like to wish the Glasgow fans and their team all the best for their final tomorrow night

That's great news. A good move for both parties IMO. I hoped this might materialise as soon as Leonard, Francis and Hunter left; but they've taken their sweet time to get it over the line. I wonder what the delay was?
Also forgot Tom's only 22. Plenty of time to develop and push on for more caps.

I actually think that it might be Solomons. How much of Heathcote playing can he possibly have seen?nickj wrote:Only a one year deal. I wonder who the reluctant / cautious party is?
He clearly thinks Bezzy is better than anyone else at the club. Perhaps he is confusing him with Morne Steyn.

From what I hear, Solomons has Tonks inked in as his first-choice 10 next season. Hopefully Heathcote will be nipping at his heels. Bezzy can stay at fullback when Cuthbert needs a rest.

I'm just in shock that the SRU have done something right, that all the fans have been asking for!
The 1 year deal is a surprise, but does suggest the SRU haven't gone begging to him and he is being told if he proves himself he'll get a longer deal.

It doesn't say it here, but didn't Heathcote have 1 year left on his contract with Bath? Maybe this is more of a loan move to see his contract out with them. I might be wrong with all of the above, but putting 2+2 together...

Solomons loves the short trials, as we know. Lets him say that he 'tried' if it doesn't work out.
Surely Heathcote is the best 10 currently at Edinburgh? He has to be. Tonks hasn't played many games there yet.

Huzzah! Hopefully Tam can get a fair crack at the whip next season.
With no European rugby to distract us anything other than a playoff finish for Edinburgh I would say is unacceptable.

Hopefully we can add Bresler and Stroker as well before next season.
Huzzah! Hopefully Tam can get a fair crack at the whip next season.
With no European rugby to distract us anything other than a playoff finish for Edinburgh I would say is unacceptable.
We do have European rugby, it will just be on Thursday nights playing against teams like Rovigo and Parma.

I think a play off spot may be a bit of a tough task yet!
next year we should be looking at a top 6 finish along with winning the diddy euro cup that we are currently involved in!
I don't think Grandpappy or his new signings will be in a position to displace Munster or Ulster in the next 12 months!

Delighted about Heathcote, a proper fly-half at last that can steady the ship.
With quick service from either Hart or Kennedy, a good backline is developing with Heathcote, Scott, Visser and Tonks.
Where does Fife fit in? His future at centre or on the wing?
Is it worth getting excited about Farndale or Hoyland for next season?
Always thought a pro-team would benefit from playing in a 2nd tier European tournament, chance to actually win some silverware.

I saw enough of Tonks in the 8 games he played at 10 to think he is the genuine long term future at 10 for Edinburgh. Yes it may not turn out that way, and it is very early days, but he played very well, including some big games (including a big win in the HK down in Gloucester).
Toonie has shown though that you can rotate your players regularly and still get a lot out of them, so him and Heathcoat give us 2 good options.
With regards to Fife, I'm really not sure. I actually think he's a better winger, as he doesn't quite have the power or rugby brain to play 13 well IMO, but I know FES will disagree. It's also hard to tell how he'll do there as he hasn't played there much at all for Edinburgh.
However, given that our only other option is to play Matt Scott (12) at 13, I would be more than happy seeing Fife getting a run at 13!

Heathcote is a very good signing for Edinburgh and hopefully for Scottish rugby. Both starting to develop a few good options at FH.

OK, so what do Edinburgh need now?
For me 1 possibly 2 locks we only have 4 in the squad , so possibly Bresler, fitness permitting and AN Other. Maybe a 13 unless Fife is going to play there and a quality backrow preferably a 7 unless we play left right, so maybe Stroker?
After that I think we have next years squad.

Can I just ask a general question. What approach should Scottish club sides be taking with signings? Shouldn't we at least aim for quality players from other Top 14/Jeff/Super Rugby sides?
And what should be approach be with younger players? All of the players RDW says we need for Edinburgh can be sourced from U20 ranks (Irvine-Hess at 4, Dean at 13 (both of whom are already signed to Edinburgh as EDPs) and you could pick up young Tommy Spinks from London Scottish as a promising young openside). Should we be going for at least one international quality player backed up by one young Scottish talent?

Pretty sure Irvine-Hess is being released, and judging by his physical attributes that's probably fair as he's never going to be big enough. He's not listed in the squad anymore.
I think we need a player in each position at the very least the same calibre as the players that are likely to start there.
At 7 Roddy Grant is the first choice, and if he is inured we have Watson or Du Preez or Leonardi playing out of position.
2nd row is obvious that we need at least 2 experienced locks as we only have Gilchrist, Atkins and the Toolis brothers.
13 is even more bare - Matt Scott out of position, Sam Beard, a youngster in Chris Dean or take a punt that Dougie Fife is up to the job long term. Either way we could very much do with an experienced head there.
I agree though - there's no point buying either a young inexperienced lock or a journmeyman. That's not what we need and we've got plenty of them. We need to get quality or don't bother - we can make do with a young Scottish player.

That's what I was meandering to. Surely, surely money is better spent on fewer but higher quality players?
