Barclays Premier League 13/14 Thread Part 'x'
First topic message reminder :
Superb by Mourinho. When are Liverpool at their most dangerous? The first thirty minutes of games; that is, generally, when they tear teams apart.
Not allowed to do that today, though, even against a very weakened Chelsea side. Liverpool didn't get a clear chance all game, and one costly, costly error gave Chelsea what they needed.
That and frustration, as Liverpool rapidly ran out of ideas and invention.
Back in City's hands now - another title won on goal difference?

City's to lose now, mourinho will be kicking himself - did the hard work and messed up the other games.
As for united, where to start. A note to some of the staff don't say anything or compare a manager to anyone after one bloody game, we look even more stupid/clueless now.
Still at least we can lose to hull tomorrow to forget the Sunderland mess now

I am getting worried about keeping pulis now....
seriously worried.. I think some biggish teams will go for him. Its not just results and grit, his style has been decent at palace..

Nah Pulis will stay put Mysti. He owes them another season at least. It's not like other clubs were queuing up to employ him.

I wouldn't worry mysti, he has got you competent in both aspects of the game, no more - no less. This is jut the worst pl ever and barely any of the sides are competent.

Chelsea are only a few points off the title, and reached CL semi; that's a very good return given their lack of firepower.socal1976 wrote:Starlight wrote:Mourhino may be behaving badly, but he's still a genius, when Chelsea have some world class strikers next season they'll tear up the league.
Genius is a really over used word. He isn't Shakespeare or Khayyam, he isn't Newton or Einstein either. He is a very good probably a great manager; yet a genius I doubt. Chelsea finished 3rd last year as well without the aid of this spectacular genius and their strike force was no better than it is now. Yes they will get a good striker and probably again will be a favorite for all the big trophies but he isn't a genius unless you are really watering down the meaning of the word but he is a bright and talented manager who in my opinion failed to live up to his reputation this year.
I would say he's a genius, he can engineer a win in almost all situations.

i just hope the owners give him 30-50m to spend in the summer, because then its a certainty i think. There has been a few issues with him and parish over it

Shame to see an Arsenal side go out there and bottle it like that...wait, that was Liverpool?!
He might not have given Mourinho his job at United, but Fergie clearly left a parting gift for him; Liverpool's bottle.
Seen Pulis linked to Newcastle. Don't do it Pulis, they don't deserve you. Their newspapers are a disgrace at the moment the way they're attacking Pardew.

30-50 million is a lot for palace.
Especially as higher fees com man higher wages and 30k+ a week for 4-5 years is a big financial burden.
Would you not be better off spending say 15-25 million on tying down any loan deals and 1 (maybe 2) players who will go into the 1st 11 and improve the team?

Whilst it could be said Liverpool bottled it, they aren't the best side in the league and they had a lot of luck and did fantastically well to get 11 wins in a row and become favourites.

the rumour is pulis wants a minimum of 30m spending and that a few clubs are offering him a lot more money to go to them..
talks with parish wednesday night.
palace are trying to run this like a business so i understand where you are coming from however the 4 owners are worth billions in total. and its surely prudent to back pulis as he will almost guarantee us a place in the PL next season with some more signings..
his jan signings worked wonders

Of course, but Arsenal do wonderfully to get into positions in which they can win the title. You have to have bottle when the pressure is on. Between the players and the manager they have bottled it.

Arsenal haven't bottled anythibg, not being good enough isn't bottling it. They have the 4th or 5th beat squad (and finances) In the league- they are where they should be.

not sure liverpool have the better squad- they have just suffered less injuries.
and i think they are above united mate.
Moyes wasnt a good enough manager for you- we have both said that all season despite what others have said- but he really isnt that bad. Just not good enough at the top level

Didn't see the game last night so can't really comment on that, but it's sad to see the title fight drift out with a whimper, I'd be amazed if City drop points to Villa and West Ham but stranger things have happened.
Hooefully some of the younger players in this squad, Henderson, Flanagan, Sterling, Sturridge, Coutinho etc can use this disappointment to drive them on next season.

I think the way they crumbled shows a lack of bottle. Liverpool shouldnt in theory be up there, but blowing up like that is bottling it.

Re: Barclays Premier League 13/14 Thread Part 'x'
Last night I was in a sense of shock after watching that capitulation. I woke up this morning hoping it might have been a bad dream. But in the cold light of day I think we have to admit that the signs have been there for a long time. Too many times we have conceded soft goals this season. This has been hidden to an extent by the wonderful performances of our attack, but it will always bite you in the end. You simply can not concede as many goals as we have and win the premier league. Nine goals in the last four games is not top four level nevermind champion material. Hopefully we can use this experience to improve next season. We need a few areas of the team to be improved in particular in the defensive areas and the quality of our replacements.
No shame though finishing second to Man city. IMO they are the best team in the division, and they have the best strength in depth. In August every Liverpool fan would have accepted second place immediately, and most opposition fans would have laughed if someone had predicted a second place finish. However, I can't help but wonder how long we might have to wait for another opportunity.

The FA are considering letting PL and Championship clubs field 'B' teams in a league inbetween League 2 and the Conference.
In the words of the greatest Prime Minister this country ever had: No, no, no.
If you really want a reason as to why our young footballing talent is inferior to that of say...Germany or Spain, make a note of how many sports the United Kingdom (the best sporting nation in all of Europe) compete in at the highest level, and then do the same for either Germany or Spain.
There's your answer. Oh, and we have a slightly smaller population as well.

We need something like this. We might have our fingers in multiple sports pies but we never win anything. We just turn up and do ok.
If it works for them then why not do it?
The best thing for the development of English talent would be to cut off the Premier League and Championship and make League 1 and League 2 farm leagues for the bigger clubs.
It will never happen but I'd guarantee we'd have realistic shots at winning tournaments rather than hoping for the quarter final.

It'd be the single worst thing that could happen to English football
For a start half of these "b" teams wouldn't barely have an English player in them

I don't see how having Chelsea 'B' playing Plymouth Argyle, for instance, is actually going to help the national team.
That's why the loan system exists.
Plus it would be an eliteist idea, favouring the rich, and it would ruin the greatest lower-league club system in the world.

You want to see why we don't compete with these nations, look how many top class coaches they have compared to us. How many qualified coaches throughout the system. There's your problem, we don't have nowhere near enough

"So Roy, England lost 2-0 to Brazil in the quarter-finals, just whose fault is that?"
"Well you know Gary, if we had Arsenal and Chelsea 'B' teams putting five past the likes of Accrington Stanley, Bristol Rovers and Luton Town every week, we'd have most certainly won this game."
"Nothing to do with the lack of top English coaches or homegrown talent breaking in to the Premier League?"
"No Gary, not at all. All about the 'B' teams."

You mean the loan system being used that makes people moan about Chelsea.
What I propose doesn't involve any Chelsea B or Arsenal B. What I propose is that the youth teams of the top 44 clubs move to 44 League 1 & League 2 locations and play as that team with mix of the top players already their and top players from the youth team which means the older players at those smaller clubs become contracted to the club that the homegrown players come from, with League 1 champions the highest level achievable, and are essentially a minor league team. So for intstance Tranmere could be used as Liverpool's, Oldham for Man United, Luton for Arsenal, Wycombe for Chelsea, etc.
It would work brilliantly for the future of the national team and the % of foreign players would go down.
