Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VII
Good news about Rory Sutherland signing a 2 year full-time contract. Looks a very useful big lump so, with Zander Fagerson, hopefully the well isn't too dry when it comes to props.
Actually, I was talking to one of Glasgow's coaches and apparently the younger Fagerson (I can't remember his name) is even better. Perhaps, we have found the next Gray brothers?

Just trying to put a positive spin on things...!
He's an outside centre playing on the wing because Ulster have Marshall, Olding, McCloskey, Payne, Cave etc. etc. Then coming through at centre are Mark Best, Sam Arnold, Jacob Stockdale etc.
Ulster are so stocked with centres the likes of Strauss and Burleigh wouldn't be doing more than carrying water for our A team. Similarly the likes of Fife and Visser wouldn't be near our team with everyone fit.
I don't think Edinburgh are in a position to complain about this one lads!

Au contraire, I'm afraid I've met far too many! Lived in Scotland for nine years and am a veteran of over 20 test matches at Murrayfield...
What I meant was, if you're giving out at Allen not being near the Ulster 23 when everyone is fit and available, well, no current Edinburgh outside back would be either. Even though I'm a massive fan of Matt Scott. It didn't come out well!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. OK, get a hold of yourself buddy. Whoa, OK? No, seriously, pull yourself together. Put down the sharpened personal grooming instruments and listen.Notch wrote:Ulster are so stocked with centres the likes of Strauss and Burleigh wouldn't be doing more than carrying water for our A team.
It takes effort to carry water. It's really heavy and sometimes when you turn around it takes a while to catch up and threatens to pull you over sideways. Also, sometimes it splashes all over your calf-skin winkle-pickers and you have to dry them against the panel heater. What I'm saying is, it's a really tough job. Carrying water is perfectly legitimate preparation for playing wing for Edinburgh. I mean, it's not that hard. I played wing for Edinburgh once and I completed this crossword puzzle at the same time. I didn't score any tries and we lost to Connacht at home, but I completed the latest chapter of my novel (the bit where Christian Gray goes to the hardware store), so it was time well spent.

There must be some rare condition to describe what you've been doing Notch - I mean, to deliberately choose to go to Scotland games, and even to pay money for it, you must have a few screws loose somewhere!
We don't have a choice in the matter - our fate has been sealed!

So Notch - if you had to pick a combined Ulster/Glasgow backline, whom would you choose?

Only if he's looking to include world class ones.
p.s. Look at the trouble we have had in the past choosing the best Glasgow backline: let's not muddy the waters by adding one or two rank outsiders into the equation.

Speaking of world class Ayr players. has undergone surgery and will miss the rest of the season.
Speaking of world class, not from Ayr, players: DTH has undergone surgery and hopes to be back for the end of the season.

Also, Glasgow are looking short of firepower in the backs now - Bennett, Dunbar, DTH, Lamont and Maitland all injured long term.

You could make a decent SQ side with all the injured players:
Berghan, ?, ?, R Gray, Gilchrist, Harley, Watson, Denton, Kennedy, Jackson, Maitland, Dunbar, Bennett, Lamont, Tonks

Joking aside, Glasgow are now worryingly short of outside backs. Or more accurately, top level outside backs. I can see them having to rely on on Lyle, Braid, Hughes, Bryce etc which is great for their development, but to win the Pro 12 you probably need more experienced players like DTH, Dunbar and Bennett etc.
Off the top of my head:
12 - Horne, Lyle, Braid
13 - Vernon
11/14 - Seymour, Matawalu, Jones, Hughes
15 - Hogg, Murchie, Bryce
I suspect we'll see a lot of Matawalu on the wing now that Pyrgos is back. Not too bad in itself I suppose.

If we play the rest of the season with Horne & Vernon in the centre I won't be too worried about that. They've both played really well in the last few weeks. My big worry is that we will need to play Jones, Niko or Hughes in the next 3 games and probably the playoffs as well.
I suppose now is a good time for me to be proved wrong about Hughes

I can see it now - Damien Hoyland gets sent to Glasgow as injury cover, plays his way into the team playing a blinder, scores the winning try in the final and ends up signing a contract with Glasgow and becomes world class...!
Meanwhile Lee Jones decides he wants to return to Edinburgh...

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VII
You Edinburgh fans are actually very hard on Lee Jones, he has played pretty well for Glasgow when he has been call up and I would rather have him on the wing than Niko, especially in a tight game.
He did score the try that got you into the European qualifiers, if I remember correctly and had a very good season that year. I know he subsequently got lost in the Edinburgh malaise but you have forgotten that he was a decent enough player, even if he had to come over to Glasgow to rediscover his form!

You are right, but I don't know if you quite appreciate just how bad he was before he left Edinburgh; He couldn't catch. He couldn't tackle. He was bloody awful. He was excellent the season with the HK run, and was deserving of his caps, but he was truly abysmal when he left and I don't think any Edinburgh fan would have been sad to see him go!
For whatever reason he found good form at Glasgow, but he's certainly not hitting the same heights as that season with Edinburgh. Like all wingers at Edinburgh though Solomons' tactics won't have helped.
I think he should concentrate on 7s if we keep it going - I genuinely think he's a world class 7s player.

Too true RDW. However, one of the heartening aspects of supporting the World Class side in Scotland is the way players step up to the challenge of filling a Glasgow shirt. If you look back to this time last season Jerry Yanuyanutawa was seen as a plodding journeyman who was there as injury cover and not much more. Ditto Richie Vee. Fraser Brown had played for Scotland but hadn't really done anything for Glasgow.
Now, if all three play in the three remaining Pro 12 games I wont be at all unhappy.
It looks as if Glen Bryce and Sandy Lyle will be called on too. Both looked very good in the Melrose sevens. Lyle's season so far is the stuff of dreams: scores for Glasgow in Italy, scores for Scotland sevens against the Blackness, plays in the Hong Kong sevens and scores, wins the Melrose sevens. Who was saying anything about him last year?
So
9. Henners Price McConnell
10 Dancer Meatball Braid Hornee
11/14 Seymour Mata Jones Hughes
12 Hornee Lyle Vernon Braid
13 Vernon Bryce Hogg Hornee
15 Hogg Murchie Bryce
Actually, my biggest concern is that I seem to remember that players must be rested after six consecutive matches. If weekends without fixtures mean that the clock is reset then we're fine as we only have five matches if we make the final. If not we could run out of players.

It is nice of you to take it for a year so that you can get FES butler to give it a good polish
It will be back in its rightful place next year after its vacation

You mean in the trophy cabinet at Murrayfield, next to the Euro trophy we're looking to win this season?
Meanwhile, hanging the Glasgow trophy cabinet is a copy of Lee Jones' pension contributions

Anyone watching Magnus Bradbury take Hawick to the cleaners in the cup final?

Really pleased to hear of Bradbury's progress. No more NSQ back row singings please!

So.... It'll be SHC v Laidlaw. Whatever happens with the match overall, that head-to-head is mouthwatering.

interesting to see that there was a larger attendance at the club finals compared to edinburgh vs the dragons! Not sure if this proves that our club game is still strong or that the pro game is struggling to capitalize on the rugby population.
Bradbury is a monster. Bradbury, Ritchie and Ashe potentially the back row for 2019 world cup?

Don't believe that figure of 10k+ at all - Edinburgh game had most of the East stand full with plenty people standing too. From what I could see it was only the west stand today and it certainly couldn't be classed as full - maybe 4-5k.
Maybe it includes the number of free tickets given away, and the attendance spread across the whole day!
