Re: QF4: Australia v Scotland, 18 October
nathan, Fanster, good points both and well made but I think these things even themselves out over the game as a whole when the ref 'is actually having a good, two-eyed game': Maitland's 10 mns may have cost Scotland 7 points net, but he may also have stopped a try (moot point, cover looked to be there) and the correct spot of Genia's knock on saved Scotland 7 undeserved points against.
Fanster: note I definitely didn't say Joubert's a good ref! I agree with you that he can be ...erm... inconsistent, at best. Meanwhile, it's now 25-24 - the latter being Scotland's highest ever score v Aus, apparently.

No, you're allowed to reach out and place the ball after stopping.

No, I think the decision was that he was prone on the ground, but didn't move his body and stretched his arm out over the line which I believe is legal. If the covering player had not slid beyond him, the Oz player wouldn't have had the space to place it over the line without making a further, ie illegal, double movement (ie of more than just his arm).

I thought that you were only allowed to do that with momentum? There was no momentum there.
The Aussies living a very charmed life at the breakdown, how they are not penalised I will never know.
PS, this is not me being bitter and wanting a NH side in the 1/2 finals

Your allowed to reach out and place the ball, but you must still be in the same motion, once youve stopped you have to present or offload.

When momentum is stopped you may not crawl closer, the "one moevement" available once tackled then is placing the ball.

No. As long as the torso is not moved, e.g. crawling further on knees, then it is not a double movement to reach out and place the ball down. Players do it all of the time.

The next 4 and a half minutes will decide what Scotlands top selling DVD in the next few months.
If they win it will be this game.

You've got to feel for Scotland, magnificent performance but... that was the most quintessentially Scottish finish to a game in history.

Full credit to Australia, great game. But we cannot take restarts and it has cost us a trip to the semis.

Yellow card that's never a yellow card leading to a try and a shocking decision to give a penalty at the end.
