Re: QF3: Ireland v Argentina, 18 October
Shame for Ireland as Sexton is such a good player. Hard to know how things will go as this is a different looking team without O'Connell. With the exception of Madigan, the backs look fine. If Ireland can match Argentina physically, then it probably comes down to Madigan. Not sure I love those odds, but this should be a great match.

Inside scoop is Sexton is actually concussed quite badly, the abductor strain is a cover story.

Re: QF3: Ireland v Argentina, 18 October
I did not think he would play after he went off like he did last week.
When Madigan came on last week Ireland looked really sharper and a much better team than they did when Sexton was on.
With POC being ruled out hard to see how this game will go.
I do hope that Sexton soon make's a full recovery.

Nervous about this game tomorrow.
Sexton, POC & SOB, huge losses.
Hopefully we can get the win, if we do. then think it will only be by a few points.
One things for sure, the fans will be in full voice.

Ireland performance against France surely has to be put into perspective now. Argentina only lost by 10 against NZ. All things considered they have to be favorite for this one.

Argentina never faced that sort of display. I doubt anyone can compete against the All Blacks in that form.

No side in this competition would have lived with that New Zealand performance tonight. None of them.
The All Blacks did a bluff through their entire Pool stage - taking time to experiment on different plays and still fully confident they had the gas if needed to pull off a win in the end after all the 'training' for 80. These guys play a better side each and every week in training than the meet on an International field most times.
So there is no comparison to be made with New Zealand in the mood they were in tonight with the one they were in against Argentina.
This of course has no bearing on what the outcome might be tomorrow or the performances might be from either side. It'll be a new game, and I'm sure Ireland will have to play out of their skins again to pull off a win. The day will take care of itself and we'll see how we go.

Re: QF3: Ireland v Argentina, 18 October
Ireland's final is tomorrow. If they make the RWC semi final they should be content with that and hail Schmidt as someone who has turned them into a team with final four expectation. Reaching the semis for the first time in 26 years is an achievement not to be sniffed at.
When Argentina joined the RC they automatically entered into competition with the top three teams in the world so naturally they will expect to be reaching the last four.

This will be much different for Madigan as I can't imagine our pack will be dominating the match as much as last week, I have faith he can prove everyone wrong though and prove himself finally as an OH and not just a great impact sub.
I think he might be on his way to a larger role even if we lose tomorrow, as it seems (if Concussion again) that Sexton might be in a very difficult area now career-wise. If it's another concussion, it's been too many and he'll be forced to ask questions of himself.

Indeed....tell you something weird though. Was at Musgrave park for the Munster game. Tomás came on at about55-60 mins...turned the game around and made Keatley look very good...not joking...

I have to say the mystery's surrounding Sexton are becoming a bigger issue now than they could have been. If Schmidt really has been bluffing the Argentinians on this then fair enough... the bit of distraction could be a final stroke of tactical genius to squeeze every last drop of miserable advantage from a truly awful situation.
The problem with that story is that it does not seem to be coming across in the media at all. Not only the press and tv pundits, but also players like Heaslip himself have now been talking up the "devastating" blow that Sexton's last-minute pull out has now added to the task ahead. I dunno but that doesn't really sound like the kind of talk you want your captain heading into the game with.
I think all of us knew that Sexton was a real worry. Would it not have been better to simply make the decision early and give him a full two weeks to recover? That surely would have settled team nerves and expectations and simultaneously shown real confidence in Madigan's ability to carry this game.
Anyways... time to wipe those thoughts from my head for the next few hours.

One of his comments (he doesn't hold back on poor old Paulie & Sexton
Gibbo
This is ********. The hard truth is, O Connell was seriously on the wane. He was well past his top class international sell-by date.
Right here. Right now. Hendo is twice the effective player he is. Paulie served us well, I and other knowing rugby fans know this to be true, but this is timely. I wish him well in his future. Respect.
Enough of this Irish self-serving ******. We need to grow up and realise that blind loyalty has held us back for eons. #seedeccie
Time to be ruthless. Like the KeeWees. And move on, if we ever want to win this thing.
As for Sexton. If he and Paulie had lasted that game, we would be playing the Keewes (and out), now, instead of a better chance v a free-flowing Argentina. Who may just put us back in our place, unless we give that 2nd half performance for 80 minutes against them. They are a better team imo.
Madigan had us playing like Leinster in 2012, in contrast to the ball and hope-kickers we had become. . Hendo was punching holes at every turn. Maddser was frightening the shoite out of France. Something we seriously lacked up to the moment they came on.
Now, we have some hope of progressing.
Word.
#wakedefockup
And Believe
--------
Gibbo
O Mahony is the player we will miss most. He is pure and true calculated aggression. But he should start on the bench in future. Massive impact player. Its a 23 man game now.
The essential SOB will be back for the SF. If we make it.
The best starting and perfectly balanced backrow, we could possibly have, is forming by osmosis and injury.
It should, and MUST be in situ, for the SF.
O' Brien, Henry and Heaslip. Been saying this long before this gig kicked-off.
Believe.

Re: QF3: Ireland v Argentina, 18 October
Gibbo is right that Ireland will miss POM but wrong thinking that he should be an impact sub.
Very nervous about today, I have Ireland as the favourites and hope that they give the Argies a good beating but there is this little doubt in my head...
I said before the RWC that I would have been exceedingly happy with topping the group but a Semi final would be a dream come true, Still feel this way so if Ireland lose today I will still be a very happy man.

I don't think so Rory, I said a few weeks back that he looked short of form and as such was bringing a slight imbalance to the back row.

All Ireland must be gone to Wales for this one. Just after realising that's why this place is so empty.

Re: QF3: Ireland v Argentina, 18 October
There is a nugget of truth in what Gibbo has said. For instance, around the pitch Henderson is a more effective player than POC. But it is the intangibles that POC brings that makes (or made) him an integral part of the team. But to say we would have lost with POC and Sexton on the pitch? It is utter nonsense.
And POM was absolutely brilliant until he got injured. His performance as a 'performance of a lifetime' was a bit overstated though.
Anyway, usually for big games I feel nervous and a sense of anticipation. Today, it isn't there. I really think Argentina will turn us over. Madigan was great against France but he isn't good enough consistently at this level. He hasn't got the kicking game to control a match of this magnitude. The backrow with Murphy doesn't do it for me. Henry is an underrated player and I don't think he is a step down from SOB or POM- he's a sideways step, a different player. But when SOB and POM are out? Murphy is a big step down.
Argentina by 10.

Ireland have to put down the hair shirts and the Kilkenny and win this. There cannot be NO northern hemisphere participants in the Semis. What a load of old pish that would be.

Re: QF3: Ireland v Argentina, 18 October
Gael,
I don't have as many concerns about Madigan as I used to. Last week he stepped up and showed his maturity in big match situations. I believe that he controlled the game perfectly last week and believe he will today as well.
Argentina are a good side and have come on in leaps and bounds since regularly playing the SANZAR teams but I still feel Ireland are better.

Ireland v Scotland semi final. It's written in stone
Sexton out is hardly great news, but if Madigan does exactly what he is told to do, and with Murray running the show, we should be fine on that front.
Not so sure about Murphy. Big game needed from him, but if he can't handle it, then we have choices. Bring on Ryan, and move Henderson to 6, or leave Henderson where he is and bring Ruddock on.
As Gibbo would say 'BELIEVE'

Hold on tight folks, especially Exiled Gael. I think this is going to be a hell of a ride. My guts are knotted and I'm not sure the roast dinner's gonna be as well timed as usual.

Up all night (work) 1 hours sleep. Kids taken to the park as a distraction.
Now it's time to sit down strap in and enjoy the ride.
I'm bricking it.

Are you with him or on the phone? Say g'day from me next time you see him.
Good luck Ireland. Really hoping they will win even though I've tipped Argentina.
