Who should never have had 3 caps or more
As a companion piece, and also more entertaining, what players never warranted one cap but kept getting selected.
3 or more caps please

SA
Wynand Olivier... hell Brad Barritt used to tear him a new one every game.
Scotland
Di Rollo... would prepare for matches with a bar of soap. Peter Wright... I mean hell he's even a Lions.
England
Got to be Tom Youngs and Jamie Noon
Wales
Colin Charvis - there are more highlights of him getting knocked out by various persons then of him doing good things. Slightly unfair but how he got 100 caps is beyond me.... not just because he's as Welsh as Ronald McDonald.
Australia
Nearly every prop they have ever fielded in the pro era bar a handful and I mean 1 or 2. Bill Young was the worst of the bunch.
Ireland
Richard Wallace

I don't remotely want to know how one prepares with a bar of soap. Has vague connotations of a scene in a prison movie.fa0019 wrote:Scotland

Only way I can explain how he dropped so many balls. I have played with people missing limbs who were better at catching balls (no lie). I seriously think he had OCD and was one of those people who couldn't stop washing their hands.

Re: Who should never have had 3 caps or more
The nearest recent example is Tomkins for England, who was an extremely limited/poor player at international level. In fairness though it was at a time where practically every English centre was out injured and i do admire the fact he was given 3 matches and enough rope to identify he wasn't good enough. there can be too quick a turn around. I suppose he also helps understanding of why farrell is currently at 12 rather than bringing in a player perhaps not entirely on the radar or a bit too early.

Mark Jones - a winger who used to fall over whenever he came near the try line

To be fair though the first 50 of Alfie's caps were shocking. The next 50 were stellar.

Funny. The only times i saw him drop balls was when pressure was on......fa0019 wrote:doctor_grey wrote:I don't remotely want to know how one prepares with a bar of soap. Has vague connotations of a scene in a prison movie.fa0019 wrote:Scotland

For Scotland Marcus Di Rollo, Andy Henderson, G-Dog Morrison, Simon Webster the list is long and distinguished.

Also every back who wears a scrum cap should be in this list...

Use to think that about the backs until Jack Nowell.

Mind you Halfpenny wears a scrum cap too. I'd be really surprised if the forwards don't absolutely extract the urine at every opportunity for such blatant wussiness.

Nope. Hard working player but little more than that. A bit of a tiddler in terms of international locks; to give that some context he's over a stone lighter than Tim Swinson and an inch taller, and nearly two stones lighter than Jonny Gray.
What did always impress me about Scott MacLeod is that he suffers from asthma, and required frequent medication before, after and sometimes during games. Regardless of that, he would put in one heck of a shift. Another great fact about Scott MacLeod is that he once drank so heavily that it raised his testosterone levels such that he failed a doping test. Sounds like a Jason Leonard-esque night out!!
Good club player. Not an international lock. Much like Swinson actually.

Any All Blacks on this list?
For England how about Tim Payne? And he's a Lion.

Chris Czekaj for Wales. The guy astonishingly has 9 caps. I remember Rory Best scoring s 6N try against Wales after a Czekaj horrow show of dealing with a fairly straight forward kick.

For the All Blacks I do think Stephen Donald is a very limited player. Chris Rattue was hardly a stellar All Black either, and I never really understood what Caleb Ralph did.
Of course the reason there are so few duff All Blacks is because they pack off some of their worst players to the NH!!

Just on McCaw, the other night he was named New Zealander of the year (2015) usually a scientist or doctor, or captain of industry gets it, but this year we give it to a Rugby player, How cools that?

That is cool. Here in Scotland it has to go to Alex Salmond. Every year. I believe the judge is a chap called Mr A Salmond.

Probably not quite good enough for international, but he got his caps because he was always a very good, strong premiership centre.

Wow. Back up a minute here. All the players mentioned above are Calcutta Cup winners!
Plus Henderson is one of a very select few (in fact can only off the top of my head think of Paterson & Ally Hogg) to ever score a hatrick of tries for Scotland.

Wales - Hal Luscombe somehow he managed to bag himself a grandslam winners medal.
England - Henry Paul (did he get 3 caps?) or Erinle

Yes because we beat England in scintillating fast paced game that our lightning quick backs shredded the English defence to pieces...
Or did Mike Blair not just marshall the likes of Jacobsen, Ford, Murray, Hines, White,Strokosch, Taylor, Hogg to crush England mercilessly up front whilst Parks and Paterson kicked imperiously....

We all know those games weren't try-fests
But wouldn't underestimate the defensive contribution of the centres in those wins. Especially the fine shackling job G-Dog did on the much vaunted Vainikolo.
Incidentally speaking of Lesley 'the new Lomu' Vainikolo I'd add him to the list.

How many did the "chainsaw" get for Scotland?
And wasn't there a big oaf of a prop called Andy Watt who was a lock turned LH (6'5) I think he was.
For England....
Erinle
Tim Payne
Lee Mears
David Paice
Ah theres soo many....

I can't decide if Gavin Duffy should be in n this list or the not enough caps I seem to remember him being great for club for a few years but his few appearances for Ireland to be things nightmares are based on

If you do you could mention Phil Dowson also. There were solid reasons why Lancaster brought these guys in when he did and better reasons for why their international careers were so short.

Andy Farrell, Lesley Vainikolo, Shontayne Hape, Henry Paul, Sam Burgess.....some real nonsense got fast-tracked into the England side. Of course Jason Robinson and, ahem, Chris Ashton would probably count as success stories.
That said, Wales did once get pretty excited about Iestyn Harris.
It hardly seems fair that the Aussies got Lote Tuquiri and Mat Rogers (although they also got Wendell Sailor as well), and the All Blacks scored Brad Thorn and Sonny Bill.

Will James comes to mind. Veteran Gloucester lock who won four caps for Wales during the infamous 2007 under Gareth Jenkins. Never again considered after, for then as now there was clearly immeasurably better quality to choose from. The coach at the time had a bizarre fascination with scrapers and the bottoms of barrels.
Andrew Bishop won 16 caps over 7 years! Decent regional player in his day but was only ever called up by Wales when injury necessitated.

Good call. Hard to think of many Irish players not deserving of at least a few of their caps in the last eight years thankfully. Even perennially 'unpopular' players like Dave Kearney and Paddy Wallace are/were good enough to merit being international players. I would say playing Tom Court as a tight head prop was a terrible idea, but Tom Court as a loose head prop still deserved every cap he got on that side of the scrum. That's the closest I can think of since Brian Carney pulled on the jersey.

Didn't Marc Lievremont bizarrely pick a lock from a ProD2 side against Wales only to immediately drop him again?

Are you talking about the Winger that played for the Newcastle Knights and played Rugby league for Ireland? because I cant ever recall him playing Rugby union for Ireland. He was a bit of a character though.
