Well done Tiger.
Your adjunct about being condemned to repeat the past (endlessly) is an apt description of what we do here mostly.
I was canvassing support among coaches and parents after Pipetto's match on Sunday for a visit to t'Stoop for the Luvvies upcoming visit. Most people thought it sounded like a good idea. Then we realised that it's the night before our coaches and dads guided tour of our local microbrewery. As we're all married men the choice came down to support your local craftsmen (by getting philanthropist slandered) or watch the MFL get shafted, again. Cheers.

I'm sure the Advertising Standards Authority will have something to say about the cavalier use of noun "action" in that sentence.

So, will Glasgow bother to turn up for the 1872 cup this year or should we just give the trophy to Edinburgh?

From numbers on the now locked thread
"Saw the Schools cup final attracted a crowd of around 5000, makes you wonder why Edinburgh can't get more in. The Scottish varsity game got in over 10,000 having dispatched over 10,000 tickets. Obviously these are one off games but they were largely attended by young enthusiastic rugby fans.
Makes you think as well that with three universities in Edinburgh, one just outside and with St. Andrews just an hour by train away they could tap into this base. A £10-20 ticket with a drink voucher or two included would be very popular.
The Varsity game was largely student advertised; Edinburgh could come up with a similar system that many up and coming companies do. These companies give incentives to individuals to advertise their products. If Edinburgh gave free tickets to about 100 people from each uni with some sort of incentive for tickets sold they could easily create quite the buzz, or even a small ripple but with very little risk.
When you think that the Varsity game was barely touched on in the media as well yet was attended by a crowd three times as large; it was, by all accounts, advertised on social media and if Edinburgh could tap into that even slightly they might see a huge improvement."
From me
The Schools comp has two advantages!
1. They can bus bairns in from the school
2. Parents go along to watch little tommy and wee bruce playing on the big pitch at Murrayfield!
Your plan to get students involved is financial astute and very workable. The one problem with it is the tweed brigade don't want loud student types, especially with a free drink in their hands, making unruly noise at rugby matches!

How much roughly are the whole cost of attending Murrayfield? Ticket, programme, pie (is it a proper pie or a glorified pasty?) and 2 pints (1 per half).

For an Edinburgh game?
Ticket - £20 (£25 if bought on the day)
Programme - often free at Edinburgh games (but only a few pages long)
Pie - you'll struggle to find one, it is usually burger and chips vans. Around a fiver for both.
Pints - around £4.50 for warm horse pish (which is cheap for someone who is just about getting used to London prices!)
All in - £40 quid ish to watch Edinburgh lose to Zebre. And that's not including travel!

We'll win. It takes a certain mental strength to win the 1872.

I think students from St. Andrew's and Edinburgh would have few issues blending in with the tweed brigade

A few years ago there was a lot of promotion of the Edinburgh games - on sides of buses, various free ticket schemes etc. Now there is no promotion at all.
I think they should drop the price of tickets, all under 16s with an adult go free, dish out cheap / free tickets to schools etc
Just do anything to get bums on seats

Heaven forbid some sort of atmosphere is created at our rugby matches!

The problem here is Season Ticket holders (all 19 of them).
They are sold a season ticket on the basis of every game costing £20, so by buying one they save money. If they reduce ticket prices part the way through the season they will obviously be annoyed.
This can obviously be changed next year with cheaper season tickets and cheaper ticket but I can't see them changing the prices - it would imply that the product has been devalued (which, to be fair, it certainly has!).
Edinburgh absolutely need to do more advertising though - it's almost as if they don't want the people of Edinburgh to know that games are on.

Re: Edinburgh and Glasgow: Ongoing Banter Thread XIV (It's still personal)
Good news for Edinburgh - Dickinson and Berghan return! CDP too.
Edinburgh Rugby Acting Head Coach Duncan Hodge has named five changes to the starting side for tomorrow’s European Challenge Cup match with Stade Francais at BT Murrayfield (kick off 7:45pm)- live on France TV 4.
Three changes are made in the forwards, with two new starters in the centres.
Prop Alasdair Dickinson returns from a long-term injury that has seen him out of action since Scotland’s summer tour of Japan. Recovering from a hamstring problem, the Scotland international returns to the loose-head prop berth.
In the back-row Viliame Mata steps up from the bench to start on the blind-side, and Hamish Watson returns for his first game after a successful international break.
Phil Burleigh and Mike Allen come in to fill the centre positions, with Burleigh set to pick up his 50th cap on the evening.
Edinburgh Rugby Acting Head Coach Duncan Hodge said: “We have been disappointed with our previous two results away to Welsh sides but we are looking to make a positive change going into the European competition this weekend.”
“We have made a few alterations in the centres and the back-row, and welcome back Alasdair Dickinson after a lengthy spell out.”
“Also congratulations must go to Phil Burleigh for reaching his 50th appearance for the club.
“The players have shown a real determination this week to try and rectify some of the problems we have seen in our last couple of performances. We have shown the potential this squad of players has; it is now about finding consistency for a full performance.”
“Stade Francais are a huge club in European rugby and have some fantastic international players in their squad. They are a physical side and have some real attacking threats in the outside backs, so we need to be prepared for whatever they throw at us.”
Damien Hoyland and Will Helu retain their starting positions on the wing, with Blair Kinghorn filling the 15 jersey.
Inside the new centre pairing of Allen and Burleigh, Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Duncan Weir are unchanged in the half-back positions.
Murray McCallum and Stuart McInally partner the returning Alasdair Dickinson in the front-row. The second-row is unchanged with Ben Toolis and Grant Gilchrist packing down.
Magnus Bradbury shifts around to number 8, and is joined by Viliame Mata and Hamish Watson in the back-row.

So Berghan and Dickinson make their expected comebacks. CDP on the bench. Edinburgh have a good side and hopefully they can do something positive against SF

Stade aren't the force they used to be but they're still a quality outfit and will likely cause us some serious problems!
Hopefully we can get through the mickey mouse cup unscathed and be ready and firing on all cylinders to welcome the soap dodging ones to HQ for their annual festive spanking!

Stade have put a strong team out. Given how our season has gone so far I wouldn't be surprised if we get a BP win!

Delighted to see Dickinson back, he's been missed. I like Allen at 13 as well, although I'm yet to be convinced by Helu.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier just to develop a team that actually won matches and people wanted to watch?
Like they did at Scotstoun.

Big Bill Mata looks like a great player. He is a beast of an athlete - and scored in the last two outings I think. No Nasi, I wonder if that is just rotation or injury again?

Well Scotland got out of jail in their opening game in the cape town sevens. Beat Somoa with an end of game conversion by Scott Wight having been behind for the whole game. They were pretty sluggish, especially in the first half.
One thing about our sevens team is that they do not give up and are winning a lot of these tight games now. Hopefully this disease is catching for the rest of our teams!

In other news, the sevens squad top their group after winning all their games and go through into the top 8 play offs.
Can Edinburgh make it a full house this evening?

He's played tighthead a few games n a row now.
Under 20s loosehead who has had to fill in at TH - he's done OK in some games but getting his arse handed to him here.
