Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
First topic message reminder :
Insert funny image here, probably of a genuine Glaswegian; none of your See-an Canary nonsense here.
Insert an image summing up the pretentiousness of Luvviedom. Grant Gilchrist in a kilt eating shortbread?
Add some statistics; time elapsed, in decades, since Ickle Jonny missed a tackle. Time elapsed, in eons, since someone stayed awake for the whole 80 minutes at the Library.
Make some witty banterish comment to start the ball rolling.
See! How hard was that?
I'll Put A Funny Sub-Title Here

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Robertson seems dead against it, as do a number of others. I can only see it as a positive, as the current SRU board managed to turn rugby union in scotland around from where it was, and has seen debt decrease, revenue increase, record attendances at national level and with Glasgow, whilst increasing the budget at the pro teams and setting up academies. If they can manage that across an entire nation and 2 teams, imagine what they could do with one in a league that generates vastly more income from TV, in an area with 100k population and no top flight football team to compete against.
I know I am oversimplifying a lot here, but aside from the politics of a national governing body running a team in the backyard of another nation, there seems to be a lot of potential here.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
How the youth system is kept by the RFU is the big potential problem as they set recruiting areas for different clubs at the highest level (from memory/if someone knows more please shout). They will not be pleased.
It will be putting money into a foreign club that has little affiliation with Scotland (unlike Newcastle or London Scottish). This would be a bit of a sticking point when Glasgow need a bigger ground.
It does allow Scotland to insulate themselves a bit if the imbalance gets worse between England and the Celtic nations. After the problems in football with the money influx that has left Scottish clubs on their knees this is not the worst view. The guys who want a different style of rugby or who fall out of favour with a particular set of coaches (Visser and Barclay come to mind) will have another club that can protect them for internationals.
The only reason I can see it working is if the move to open up clubs to external investment was not aimed at the present clubs but for someone to join in here. It would be out of the direct sight of the SRU whilst getting some financial support and coaching support. If guys like Reid, Cosgrove, Tonks, Low, J Beattie, Laidlaw, Scott, Barclay and Visser had decided to attach themselves to Worcester, that may have improved their results. Looking forward some guys like SHC/Fowles, Fusaro and Hardie may need a change of scenery (or cash may be short and someone like Dunbar or Ford may get lost in the shuffle).
This is a politically acceptable option that will keep fans on board (it is mostly someone else's cash) and genuinely help relieve the player crunch (youngsters can be allowed the opportunity to come through north of the border away from English hype). Whether they have played the long game on this or not, it is an opportunity IF they can partner with the right people.

Mark Bennett has had a slight injury setback apparently, having hoped he would be fit for this weekend. He may be fit for the 1872 but Edinburgh probably won't risk him.
I hope they just leave him until after the New Year for the home game against the Kings so he's fully 100% fit - we've got good options at 13 just now and what's a few weeks extra when you've been injured 11 months!

That would be very sensible. Bring him back in gently. There is still plenty of rugby to be played this season.

Definitely. As excited I'm sure we all are to see him slot into the Edinburgh backline there's no sense in hurrying it until he's definitely ready.
We won't need him to beat the soap dodgers anyway, we beat them with Duncan Weir playing last time out so they must be terrible

The Boris Johnsons of Scottish Rugby aren't all they are cracked up to be!
Having been suitably punted out of Europe they'll be feeling a bit down. Such a shame that their next domestic fixture is against the mighty Glasgow killers at HQ (only 10 days away btw)
I take it the cup will be decided over the festive period and the game at the end of the season will just be about Edinburgh winning more Pro 14 points?

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Turner's been cited and banned for 4 weeks.
bbc wrote:Glasgow Warriors hooker George Turner has been banned for four weeks for the incident that led to a yellow card in the Champions Cup loss to Montpellier.
Turner was yellow-carded for an off-the-ball shoulder charge to the back of Louis Picamoles when Warriers led 17-5.
The Scotland cap was adjudged to have broken Law 10.4 (f), which concerns "playing an opponent without the ball".
He will miss Saturday's return fixture with Montpellier and the Pro14 festive double-header against Edinburgh.
Turner, on loan from the capital club, will also miss a further Pro14 fixture at Zebre on 6 January. He will becoming available again ahead of Glasgow's final two European Champions Cup pool games against Leinster and Exeter.
The suspension of Turner, who won his first two caps in Scotland's autumn Tests, adds to Glasgow's problems at hooker, with first-choice Fraser Brown missing last weekend's game with concussion issues.
With James Malcolm the only other fit front-line hooker, Glasgow Hawks' Grant Stewart has been called up by the Warriors, replacing injured centre Sam Johnson in their Champions Cup squad.
Warriors head coach Dave Rennie called Turner's sin-binning "dumb" after their 29-22 loss to Montpellier confirmed their exit from Europe halfway through the group fixtures.
"Leading by 12, we should've had a line-out 20m out to apply more pressure and instead he ends up in the bin - and three minutes later they've scored," Rennie noted.

Maybe a week longer than he deserved, but I won't quibble about it.
It was a cheap shot all week long and I don't like to see that in the game, especially from my own players.
Glasgow a bit tight on hookers for the next few weeks then. Malcolm will be getting some game time, which will be no bad thing. I don't expect to see Fraser Brown until the derby games. No sense in risking him to soon.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I haven't seen the incident, but 4 weeks is one of the highest suspensions I've seen in a while and that includes shoulder charges onto prone players in a ruck, high tackles, playing the man in the air resulting in them landing on their head etc.
Was it really worse than all those? I'm assuming that includes taking 2 weeks off for saying he's very sorry and won't doing it again, and his previously good record (since he's hardly played before this season)?

He's not Irish so won't get the automatic reduction
He's not an AB which is why the offense was spotted
He's not Welsh which is why there isn't a "save Turner" campaign being headed by Jiffy
In all seriousness though, it was just a silly thing to do. I never get why some players do this type of thing???

Edinburgh name a strong team for tomorrow night, albeit rotating a number of players. He's certainly not just chucking a load of academy players out there. Hopefully Graham will get more ball at fullback - that backline should be tearing them to shreds.

It's a decent team, but not ideal having three THs in the 23.
I also don’t think CDP and Bradbury can work together in the same team, at least to date they’ve struggled. That’s not to say they can’t change or develop, but so far they have been way too similar and ineffective at the breakdown. Possibly won’t be an issue in this game, but just an observation.

Not really - Cockers himself he sees him more as a winger but for his development it is good for him to play 15.
This should be the easiest game of the season so no harm in giving him a run there.

fair play.
Just concerned that they're not trying to shoehorn the laddie into a position that Scottish Rugby is short on for back up.

Real strong 23 going to Montpellier for the 1872 holders Renzo on the case here I think. BG will be pleased.

Just to back up what RDW said about Graham playing 15:
Scotsman wrote:“I think he’ll predominantly be a winger, but we’ll see,” said Cockerill. “It’s always good that a player can play two positions, and it’s good sometimes for a younger player who predominantly plays on the wing to play at full-back so he gets to understand the role of the full-back, so when he’s in the back three he understands what the full-back needs from his wingers. It’s good for his development.”

It can be a double edged sword, a bit like the old trial games. You get all your best players to smash the living daylights out of one another, just before the internationals start.
Great for proving who's on best form, but terrible for damaging the squad.
Both games should be pretty fast.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I am actually very pleased with them team, we should at least be competitive in the game. Looking at the injury list though and those not in the euro squad, we probably did not have a lot of leeway about who was going to be in the squad.
W got down here yesterday afternoon and it was blue skies and 16 degrees. a fair few warriors fans on the flight as well. we have got a pretty loyal travelling support these days. Listening to the chatter on the bus in from the airport to town, you could have been in Partick and not the south of France!
Not quite so nice today, a bit of a cold wind blowing which is keeping the temp down, still, pretty pleasant for December mind.
Montpellier is a lovely city though and we'll worth a visit. We are just finishing lunch now, with a trip to the xmas market planned for later this afternoon/evening.
Looking forward to the match tomorrow, even more so since I have seen the team.

Pretty sure he's played 15 for U20s, have a distinct memory of him at 15 against Ireland.tigertattie wrote:RDW_Scotland wrote:Edinburgh name a strong team for tomorrow night, albeit rotating a number of players. Would love to see Kinghorn come on a fly-half.
Any chance there'll be a stream for this game?

EPCR rules only allow Sky or BT to broadcast it, so if they don't then tough - Edinburgh can't even live stream it on social media.

BBC Radio Scotland have commentary.
Not sure if BEIN would have it, as I think they might have the rights outwith the uk, but would seem unlikely. Hardly likely to draw a big tv audience.

Van Der Walt has a bug, Kinghorn starts at fly-half!!
Delighted, I'd love to see him get developed at a fly-half. His pace and frame on the gain-line could be a real handful, needs to improve his distribution and tactical game but could be worth it.
Hidalgo-Clyne as back-up fly-half is interesting.

Pretty embarrassing really. I know they aren't a "big" team, but 78-0 is a humping. You've got to wonder how their inclusion in the competition is justified.

Krasny beat Stade Francais. I think that has to be more embarrassing after that.

He came running in (from about 2 yards away). I thought it looked as if du plessis had thrown a punch or certainly struck a Glasgow player in the face.

Bismarck has proven to be a right irritant these last 2 games.
Good to hear that Smith is playing excellently. Need an option behind Watson if Barclay is to stay at 6 and Hardie never regains his form.
How did Horne get on at 10? Is he looking good enough to take on the mantle of being the main 10 for a top European side or merely a caretaker?

Extra points for being funny and right at the same time.RDW_Scotland wrote:Hazel Sapling wrote:Bismarck has proven to be a right irritant these last 2 games.
Good to hear that Smith is playing excellently. Need an option behind Watson if Barclay is to stay at 6 and Hardie never regains his form.
How did Horne get on at 10? Is he looking good enough to take on the mantle of being the main 10 for a top European side or merely a caretaker?
Where is he moving to like?
European rugby is like cryptonite to us, isn't it?

Well now that the Luvvies are a top tier European side there will be calls for Pete Horne to go East to improve his game

For once Ian Morrison talks a lot of sense - having read this I've got to say from a business / financial point of view the Worcester move looks like a bit of a disaster!

Krasny game, if anyone wants to watch basically a training session.

I'm not so sure, but clearly more information is needed. I mean to continue to get the EQ player payment 16 players in a match day 23 need to be EQ. That leaves 7 who could be SQ. Plus dual eligibility increases that number.
Plus the SRU have managed to turn round Scottish rugby from the financial mess it was in, and can probably take advantage of their existing trade deals and possibly also their relationship with sponsors to extend that to Worcester.
This is clearly just speculation, but that's all anyone can go on at the moment until we know more. As an aside Morrison calls out the European rugby rules that mean two clubs can't be owned by one party, what happens if Edinburgh & Glasgow get into the champions Cup?

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Well just about to leave Montpellier having having had a very good weekend here.
The match did not really have any great meaning, so I was not to bothered about the result, just glad that we gave it a good go. I think most of the Glasgow fans that were there were similarly philisophical about it as well. There were a surprisingly large amount of Scottish fans present and they coloured up the town over the weekend and the locals seemed to enjoy there presence. These European weekend trips are great fun and not even that expensive if you book them up well in advance. I expect most of the Glasgow fans fancied this trip as soon as they saw it and all had a decent weekend, despite us not progressing from our group.
I warned my daughter, who came to her first ever rugby match with us, about Nandolo when we saw him warming and I was right. He steam roller ed poor Tommy S twice. Easy to criticise, but I would not like to have to tackle him. The only Glasgow player who seems to have mastered it is little Ali Price, who just goes in very very low. Easy for him you would imagine.
I thought Matt Smith put his hand up as well and had probably his best game for Glasgow so far. A great effort to get back and tackle Cruden and injure him in the process. The crowd did not like it but it looked fine to me. Mc Donald did well also and looks comfortable at this level to, all promising for the future.
Always hard to be sure at a live game, but Doyle did seem a bit whistle happy against us. I was trying to explain some of the penalties to my daughter, but for quite a few of them I could come up with nothing.
The stadium was decent as well, about 12,000 star, just the right size and probably what we should be aiming for long term.vg

Sounds like a great trip - if Edinburgh make it to the big boys cup I'd like to do something similar!

Anyone else noticed Kyle Traynor's reemergence at Leicester tigers? Currently propping in a front row of Youngs and Cole. Quite odd to see one of Scotland's softest ever looseheads playing in the front row for Leicester.
Julian White, Richard Cockerill, Dorian West, Graham Rowntree, Darren Garforth, Dan Coles, Tom Youngs, Mulipola, Kyle Traynor... spot the odd one out

Next year I want Clermont - their support are even more mental than the Warrior Nation. Brilliant when they are kicking penalties - pse respect the kicker huh ! The crowd get noisier when their kicker runs up. Brilliant. Stade Michelin must be best atmosphere in world rugby- awesome.
