India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
2021 India v England Tipping Competition Rules:
1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both India and England whom you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets.
You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Kohli, Pujara, Ashwin, Bumrah
Burns, Root, Broad, Bess
2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Gill, Stokes
3.
Select which wicket keeper will take the greatest number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Pant or Buttler... or "the same" amount of dismissals.
4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g.
England
b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g.
Bat
5.
a) Predict the 1st Test result.
e.g.
India
Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of each Test. No PM reminders shall be sent.
Scoring:
1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.
Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;
Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.
Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.
5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points
Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 25 bonus points for the catch = 45 points.
2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsmen earn you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.
3.
Wicket keepers: 50 points for correct selection. e,g. - Pant or Buttler.
Or if you think they will take the same number of total dismissals per innings - then nominate "the same" = 50 points.
If they take the same number of catches and stumpings (combined) and you've picked either one of the keepers - then 25 points only.
4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.
5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 75 points.
b) If you guess all 4 Test Match outcomes correctly then there is a further 125 point bonus = 300 + 125 = 425 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 75 points
If one (or more) of your selected players gets injured during a match or is dropped from the Test side after a match, then you’ll have the opportunity to select replacement players – either as it happens - for the injured player or before the next Test commences (for a player who gets dropped). Doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody else already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

It's not stated in the rules, but I feel correctly predicting a tied test should result in a 1,000 point bonus.

Rahane & Stokes the catchers

There have been around 2400 Test matches played at this stage and only 2 ties. 1 in 1200 odds. So I reckon a 1200 point bonus has a statistical backing to it.guildfordbat wrote:Duty281 wrote:Mind the windows Tino. wrote:Duty281 wrote:

Hi Duty, I tend to agree with you. I had never even thought of such a possibility! KC's stats noted.
Since I've realised you are so captivated with English history and politics; how about a 1066 point bonus if it is a tied test? Does that sound fair?
I'm sure KP_Fan won't mind too much seeing he is 995 points ahead of you. Alfie, on the other hand....

Bloody iPhone auto-correct. That was of course meant to be Ashwin, not Ashton. Unless I can have the points for Ashton Agar earlier in the week?

Yes, I did notice that today. On the spreadsheet, your coloured boxes are more up front. Alfie's are more middle order. As you say, it will come down to catches and India's 2 dig (Rohit and Gill) for you v Alfie's (Kohli and Rahane)... since your England team choices (batting and bowling) are identical to Alfie's.

yeah If India has to knock off 70 odd runs in 4th inning....the openers get to bat definitely and Kohli / rahane hopefully not.
It will be a tight finish....but I am also happy if Kohli & Rahane get big 50s or 100s tomm

I know what you mean. They score big and you're happy too. But if they only get 20s or 30s (to cover the 17 point gap) it could make things a lot closer up where you guys are.

KP_fan is the competition winner. Alfie a close second by only 31 points. Congratulations to both of you!
Soul Requiem scored a colossal 609 points today and jumped 2 places from 11th to 9th place.
Lots of bonuses for everyone on the last day - Axar's and Ashwin's 5-fers and 3 catches from Rahane.
Soul, Goose, JD and myself also picked up 50 points for Pant taking more dismissals than Foakes.
If this had been a tied test as Duty 'went for' - he would have finished up with 4396 points with the "1066 bonus"

Well that was a fascinating series to watch after England took a 1-0 lead after the 1st Test.
Then it was all India - with superb performances by Ashwin and Axar with the ball and Rohit, Pant and Sundar (today) scoring runs with the bat to see India comfortably prevail in the last 3 Tests. The matches seemed to move very quickly indeed. Especially that 3rd Test!
Thanks for your participation everyone. You are all a great bunch of people and it's great fun running the competition.
See how we go for the next ones* (I might have to take a small break due to current work commitments) but I'd definitely be up for running another full version tipping comp for the first test of the summer against New Zealand.
* If anyone has any suggestions for ODIs and T20s - then I'm all ears. Think we need something simple.
I really like the idea of two batsmen/bowlers (for tests) but maybe for the shorter formats we pick only 2 or 3 players? (no restrictions on playing role) and also the winner of course. I'm also open to any suggestions regarding scoring.
I think 1 point per run works well - maybe a smaller bonus for a "50" in ODI/T20 and more points for a wicket... say 30 points?
Perhaps scrap the wicket keeper thing but still have the 25 points for catches/run outs for your nominated fielder.
Anyway... your ideas are most welcome.

If you're doing the ODIs, I think two from each side would be fine - like you say, maybe up it a bit for wickets and lessen the 50 milestone a tad would work. Then just result, and a fielder, keep it simple especially if you have work stuff! (the ODIs and T20s come thick and fast throughout the rest of this month!)

Congrats to KP-f. Particularly as the majority of selections for this Test were before the match had started.
Hard luck, Alfie. No cigar but the respect of the changing room.

Down to wire between the top two, bit more interesting than the actual tests!
