India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
First topic message reminder :
2021 India v England Tipping Competition Rules:
1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both India and England whom you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets.
You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Kohli, Pujara, Ashwin, Bumrah
Burns, Root, Broad, Bess
2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Gill, Stokes
3.
Select which wicket keeper will take the greatest number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Pant or Buttler... or "the same" amount of dismissals.
4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g.
England
b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g.
Bat
5.
a) Predict the 1st Test result.
e.g.
India
Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of each Test. No PM reminders shall be sent.
Scoring:
1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.
Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;
Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.
Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.
5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points
Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 25 bonus points for the catch = 45 points.
2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsmen earn you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.
3.
Wicket keepers: 50 points for correct selection. e,g. - Pant or Buttler.
Or if you think they will take the same number of total dismissals per innings - then nominate "the same" = 50 points.
If they take the same number of catches and stumpings (combined) and you've picked either one of the keepers - then 25 points only.
4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.
5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 75 points.
b) If you guess all 4 Test Match outcomes correctly then there is a further 125 point bonus = 300 + 125 = 425 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 75 points
If one (or more) of your selected players gets injured during a match or is dropped from the Test side after a match, then you’ll have the opportunity to select replacement players – either as it happens - for the injured player or before the next Test commences (for a player who gets dropped). Doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody else already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

Hi Joey - sorry, just seen this. Yep, Leach and Bess as my England bowlers please. Anderson (or Broad) was only meant as a sub in case one of those spinners didn't make the cut.

Joey - you don't seem to have deducted any points from KP-f yet. Assume that's coming - it's normally an entirely reasonable term of your competitions?!

We all earned the 85-point bonus for Root's magnificent 218 runs (218 runs +20+25+40 bonus points = 303 points)
Stokes' whirlwind 82-run stand with Joe helped quite a few of us move up the points table.
A 25-point bonus for Olly, Gooseberry and KP_Fan for Pujara's shaky catch to dismiss Stokes.
And a nice little 40-point earner for Superfly late in the day with Ishant's 2 quick wickets.

Don't lose heart, old chum. We all know you like to give us all a bit of a head start - then mow us down later at your own leisure.
Almost had to get a bucket of water to separate you and Superfly... you were like an old couple holding hands for most of the day.
You'll be back I'm sure... just need Archer to bag a few tomorrow and Kohli to score some runs.
Super has Anderson and Rahane. You both have Pujara.

Re: India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
Glad you're enjoying it, Tino.
Thing to remember - is that on some days the person with the right player combinations 'on the day' seems to jump out in front - but then it's a bit like F1 racing (without Hamilton for argument's sake) - when that combination is disrupted with a wicket (much like a long pit stop or a mechanical breakdown) and then a different group of punters surge forward with their new combinations of players.
It's quite interesting and funny to watch. A 40-point deficit can be wiped out in the blink of an eye.

ha ha... you wouldn't be the only one if the rules assumed that, Guildford. That was a freakish dismissal, wasn't it?
What a day. Some real movement on the table today. Give us 10 minutes and I'll have the results up.

Notes:
Olly was quietly grazing in 12th place early today. Then he found his rocket shoes and ended up in 1st place. Well done! That was probably the most impressive rise up through the rankings we've ever seen - all time. How he did it? Pujara, Pant, Ashwin, Sundar, Pope (catch), Bess and Archer.
Duty, too, had Pant and went from 13th to 8th - as quick as you could say "Golden Classic Pant".
Flipper, Afro and Guildford had a pretty productive day too and are almost breathing down Alfie's pure wool Besto V-neck cricket jumper.
Tino also began his slow and steady climb towards the summit of the points table... but left his tent, empty pots and dirty cutlery at Base Camp for Super to carry on up. However, Super had a slight disagreement with Goose... and left him there to clean things up.

You were so far in front well into that first session after lunch before Pant came into bat. It was unbelievable how quickly that red dust cloud from Olly's Assault swallowed everyone up.
Think you were still just ahead after tea but then it was soon a case of "put down the binoculars... Olly has bolted!"

Did anyone predict a draw, Joey? I know Alfie predicted an England win...so if they do, he's laughing because I don't remember many others being so optimistic

Although his 33 runs had you top after day 1.
You've got to stick with him now, surely....

Yep, picking a Burns seems a bad choice. Joe Burns did for me in the last comp.

No, nobody predicted the draw. I reckon Alfie's in a great position going for the England win.
Just say (for argument's sake) we add the 75 points to his score... he's only 7 points behind you.

Points Table
1st Test, Day 5:
1477 Alfie [308] #
1419 Afro [229]
1387 Dolphin [239] *
1369 Pal Joey [236]
1341 Guildfordbat [188]
1334 Olly [83]
1319 James [233]
1315 Gooseberry [270]
1315 Tino [259] *
1304 King Carlos [280] *
1285 KP_Fan [169]
1268 JDizzle [220]
1228 Superfly [132] *
1211 Soul Requiem [235] *
1203 Duty [165]
Average score: 1318 [216]
# England win = 75 points
* Buttler 5 dismissals = 50 points (Buttler: 5 caught behinds; Pant: 2 caught behinds, 1 stumping)
First figure - accumulative score / accumulative average score
Second figure in [brackets] - daily score / daily average score
Notes:
Firstly, congratulations to Alfie who correctly picked the winner - England - and promptly shot to the top of the table.
I forgot to add Ashwin's 6th wicket yesterday - everybody had him and 20 points have been added to all scores.
Well done to Dolphin, Tino, King Carlos, Superfly and Soul for picking Buttler to take the most dismissals.
My Special Team Scores after the 1st Test are as follows: (using the 'special' formula)
England:
1429 - average player score 129.9
India:
1039 - average player score 95.5
Top 8 Individual Player Scores:
308 Root
220 Ashwin (perhaps a little inflated by his 6-fer but he bowled well yesterday)
167 Leach
159 Bess
157 Stokes (his catches helped his score somewhat)
151 Anderson (his final day contribution was worth much, much more I thought)
138 Pujara
132 Pant
Followed by: Pope, Sibley, Buttler, Kohli and Washington.
Some food for thought for the next Test I guess?
Thanks very much everyone! I had a ball doing this.

Thanks PJ. I've enjoyed it and appreciate the effort that goes into it
Is the plan to carry on through the series? Just tests or T20s and ODIs too?
No pressure as its clearly a lot of work on your part, just curious

Thanks Afro. I'm glad you've enjoyed it. You did very well for a first timer!
The initial plan was just for the Tests although I did do one for the 2019 World Cup - which was a simpler version.
Just looking back I see Alfie won that one! That was quite a clever scoring system... I think JD recommended it?

I might consider doing a watered-down version for the ODIs and T20s.
(Maybe pick just 2 players from each team for the white ball matches... and the end result? Any suggestions are welcome)

Very astute comment about Jimmy!
Backs up the old quote about ''there being lies, damned lies, statistics and Joey's competitions!''
Seriously though, thanks for doing this, Joey. It's good fun and we can all do with some of that now.

Think you'd have to rethink the scoring system a little for white ball PJ, too much on all rounders and batting order in those formats.

Yep, fantastic performance. Lots of authority about this team at the moment. Playing India and NZ this year should leave us battle hardened ready for you boys at the end of the year!
I started watching cricket in 1990 (Graham Gooch's 333 was the first test innings I ever watched - no wonder I was hooked) so I've seen some ups and downs over the years. I'm with Guildford that I will forever carry the heavy burden of English pessimism but I am more bullish about this England team than I have been for a long time.
Not quite the finished article but some strong building blocks in place now.

I'll carry on whatever formats you choose to do it for.
I'm assuming we pick again for the second test, or do our selections carry throughout the series?

83 points?! 83 points!
My team hit the front and collapsed at the sight of victory like the South African cricket team in a ICC knockout game
Top work PJ, and Alfie’s faith in the England rewarded!

You can pick again for the next Test, Afro. No restrictions. Make as many changes as you wish.
Yes, I felt sorry for you Ollie. I checked your score and then checked it again...
However, don't worry too much. Still 3 Tests to go.
You must be over the moon with England's win which is the main thing, right?

Nice to be in front but there's a long way to go... We have seen how the scores bounce around just over this five days. 270 points covers the field and Olly advanced that much in a single day earlier...
It appears your horse dropped a shoe on that last lap , Olly ? But after the rocket sprint the other day no one will ever feel safe with you lurking
Thanks for running this PJ...always fun , and great to see so many new entrants this time around. Thinking cap on now for Saturday...

I'm taking a massive punt on Mo having a point to prove and running through the Indian line up.
Not sure I even believe it myself but we'll give it a go anyway!
