India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
First topic message reminder :
2021 India v England Tipping Competition Rules:
1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both India and England whom you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets.
You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Kohli, Pujara, Ashwin, Bumrah
Burns, Root, Broad, Bess
2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Gill, Stokes
3.
Select which wicket keeper will take the greatest number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Pant or Buttler... or "the same" amount of dismissals.
4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g.
England
b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g.
Bat
5.
a) Predict the 1st Test result.
e.g.
India
Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of each Test. No PM reminders shall be sent.
Scoring:
1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.
Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;
Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.
Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.
5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points
Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 25 bonus points for the catch = 45 points.
2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsmen earn you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.
3.
Wicket keepers: 50 points for correct selection. e,g. - Pant or Buttler.
Or if you think they will take the same number of total dismissals per innings - then nominate "the same" = 50 points.
If they take the same number of catches and stumpings (combined) and you've picked either one of the keepers - then 25 points only.
4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.
5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 75 points.
b) If you guess all 4 Test Match outcomes correctly then there is a further 125 point bonus = 300 + 125 = 425 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 75 points
If one (or more) of your selected players gets injured during a match or is dropped from the Test side after a match, then you’ll have the opportunity to select replacement players – either as it happens - for the injured player or before the next Test commences (for a player who gets dropped). Doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody else already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

Re: India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
Great Stuff PJ.....the competition creates a sub-plot for us within the main game
2 player from each side with no restriction on bowler or bat is good enuf if you are doing limited overs.
Toss is too much of a lottery variable not in our control....maybe you could replace it with either series score....or some kind of margin of win prediction...if possible..
Though I haven't thought thru how that could work
Thanks again for your efforts

Cheers Soul. You finished with a wet sail. Well done mate!
Nothing more than good fortune at the end I'm afraid to say. Beyond Ashwin and Patel the batting was a lottery pick.

Well I already congratulated KP_fan on his win once it was clear India weren't batting twice...but can now make it official
Many thanks to PJ for again running this event - and to all who participate in making it a lot of fun...if a whiteball version is on I'm sure we will all enjoy that too

Thanks for running this PJ. Really enjoyed it so will definitely look at taking part in any future ones.
Not so sure I got to grips with the points scoring though - did the bowlers selected just get bowling points, or did they get batting/fielding ones too. Was working on the assumption that my bowlers just got bowling points and my batsmen just batting points?

Re: India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
Thanks Afro. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The bowlers get batting points but not fielding points. Batsmen get bowling points to (e.g. Root) but not fielding points.
I think most of us had Root, so when he took his 5-fer in the 3rd test, we all got 20 points per wicket plus the 50 bonus points.
If he was also your nominated fielder (quite a few of us also had him as our fielder)... then you got 25 points for each of his catches.
None of us had any bowlers as our fielder(s) - but if we had, then we would have got points for any catches they had taken.

Clear as mud.
Thanks for running this again, Pee Jay. Brilliant work as usual. Look forward to the return fixtures in the UK....
I finished bang on middle table. Metaphor for my life, right there.

It might have been useful for me to have tried to understand that before now So could I, in theory, have had Ashwin as a choice of batsman?
Not picking Stokes as a batsman for the last test, despite having him for the other 3 looks an even poorer choice now.

Flipping heck, Joey. You didn't have to explain it! I'm blaming you if Afro tries to muscle in on going for my traditional picks of Starc and Cummins with their regular wickets and scores of 20+ when England next play Australia.

Yes, they are Guildford's sure bets... Eddard "Ned" Stark and Cummins.
In answer to your question above Afro, yes, you could have picked Ashwin as a batsman given his all-rounder status.
Same with Stokes.. there's always a chance when he's not scoring runs he might chime in with some wickets... and sometimes both.

Re: India v England Test Series Tipping Competition
Guys, just realised the T20s start on Saturday. The first of 5 matches, then followed by the 3 ODIs ending on 28th March.
I'm afraid I'll have to pass on the tipping competition for those - that's quite a bit of work. At least a few hours a day (and night)... and the games are on at ungodly hours here, which makes things even more awkward for me.
So I'm sorry to have piqued interest - but I think I need a bit of a break at the moment. I'll definitely be following it but I'm also starting to enter into a more appropriate marsupial sleeping pattern as we get well into autumn season in the Antipodes. Obviously I'd still be interested in participating in a tipping comp if someone else wants to run the show.
I hope everyone and your families are well and looking forward to the upcoming matches.

Don't look at me but someone has got to run a new tipping competition before long. We can't have KP-f holding the title for eternity!
