The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Here's my controversial opinion.
The globe is on it's way on a hand cart. Global warming. And sport has it's place in in its contribution. The obvious example is F1. But even the measly RU has it's share of responsibility. Global sport is fun though.
I'll stay in touch on this point.

I do but that was the last World Cup dreamer. They won't have guys like Ratuvou, Delasau, Rauluni, Bai who were instrumental last time. They are leaving a back 3 of Caucau, Nalaga, Nacewa at home. They have a poor front row and the union were talking about pulling out of it.
Samoa are the challenge.
They had a rubbish scrum and line out in 2007. What did we do? Deliberate knock on's and peppering the touchline? No! we started playing 7's against them. Fantastic for the neutral but nobody in the Welsh camp came out of that well, not least Robin McBride, who is the only coach still there!
It was necessary though. The problem is that sort of sheet is necessary again!

Staggy, for either to make a semi should be seen as an achievement
For me, difficult to see beyond quarters that look like this:
NZ vs Scot/Arg
Eng vs Fra
Aus vs Wales
SA vs Ire

I agree with general conscensus that it would be success. There will be those that will disagree I have no doubt.
Asbo - I also agree logically your quarter finals are most likely.

Luckless I see all 6 Naitons, 3 Nations, Island Teams and Argentina as being some way possible to qualify however unlikely some may be.
I see all 3 Nations teams as only ones I would consider to have guaranteed qualification.

Those looking for info on Ireland's WC jersey,According to this there won't be an image out to 11th August. Although it is possible it will be leaked like the other shirts.

The AB's one will be out around then too.
Though it's be black, and collarless. With a silver fern on one breast, the WRC logo on the other, and an Adidas striped triangle in the middle. One sleeve will have a William Webb Ellis trophy on it, with "1987" underneath. Refer. the 2007 and 2003 jerseys ...

Afternoon Cari, glad you got a lunch break today
Stag - I don't care what players Fiji have missing or who they don't have from their last world cup. The memory is still there, we should have beaten them last time but didn't. The same thing could easily happen again this time.
I just need to prepare myself for the worst.
Please don't think that means I don't have belief in my team. I do. I just also know exactly how capable they are of shooting themselves in the foot.

you need to put the image url in the image code (use the icon that looks like the computer screen 16th in reply - 7th in quick reply).
Then put the Spoiler code around the image code!
Also - dont forget to include a label for what is in the spoiler.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Wales are right to be worried about being shocked by a Pacific Islands team. You've just got the wrong team. Fiji are weak now- Samoa on the other hand... well I'm glad we don't have Samoa!

Sadly the other tradition is that the "away" shirt will be hideous. I can't remember the last time Adidas did an away shirt I was prepared to buy.

I'm really looking forward to that group by the way. It's got more genuinely mouth watering games than any other group. Wales will play it smart and negative this year, enough to easily see off Fiji. Samoa vs. Wales will be very tight and test your nerves

Afternoon all..
second day back from my holidays and it's not getting any easier being back.
I would say Samoa would be a tougher test right now. Fiji have been trying to bring anyone and every one in to their squad to get a strong team there.
in reality if they stick to their loyal players to the jersey they would be more settled and then just add a few players to it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Aye Notch, I can see for the neutral that it does look a very tasty group. I don't know why people think we're going to see off Fiji so easily. I know it's wasn't our first team but we drew the last time we played them. Fiji know they can beat us, and that can do a lot for a side.
The thing is with Wales I can see us losing against SA, Fiji and Saoma, but I can just as easily see us beating all three (SA being a bit of a push admitedly)
And I wish we didn't have to play negative rugby, I don't like it

But Dreamer thats like saying that Scarlets knocked out Munster from Heineken Cup in 2007 so I should be most worried about them this year rather than Northampton who Munster have knocked out of Europe twice in three seasons.

Hmmm, maybe the away strip, there's not so much blue in that. Now if they did a red or black aways strip ... or even green

Just testing; Johann Muller in full flight.
Cool!
Ultimately, don't you feel Wales need to play the gameplan most likely to see off their opponents? Fiji are traditionally weak at set piece; turn them and test their lineout!
Actually Samoa have a good set piece, it's a bit of a cliche.

No worries on this one though - just bear in mind for future.

I dunno I'd expect Wales to win comfortably against Fiji with narrow win over Samoa and a loss to South Africa.

Oh yeah Notch I know we need to play in a certain way to win, I'd just prefer it not to be in a negative way. It's not what I enjoy watching in rugby and not how I personally like to see the game played. But yeah, guess it can win you matches.
Stag - you might very well be right, but please allow me to panic, I hate, HATE, feeling confident going into a match. Just doesn't sit right with me.

We've run South Africa close the last few times we've played them. It would be great of we could beat them, but if we did I'd probably be more worried that we'd lose against Samoa or Fiji.

I wonder why it is that being under dog is becoming so sought after in rugby. I watch an interview with Mark Ella talking about the South Africans from years ago and he was talking his team up, we're gonna beat them, they lack pace out wide etc.
Nowadays thats just seen as giving ammunition to the enemy.

Lucky, very true, altho you could argue that the closeness of the result has gone with location:
13 November 2010 Millennium Stadium, Cardiff 25 – 29: winner = South Africa

14 June 2008 Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria 37 – 21: winner = South Africa

It's not that Wales shouldn't attack, they just shouldn't self-sabotage themselves by attacking all the time. They need to choose their moments. Lat time against Fiji it was just kamikaze rugby. It was kind of great to watch, I enjoyed it but it was strategically mental on the part of the Welsh coaches. If it makes you feel better, I could say I think you'll lose and crash out in the group phase?
I don't, but sure if it makes you feel better...
This is the off-season. Sure you're meant to make grandiose predictions of greatness for your side before nervously back-peddling when those are actually put to the test! I'm going to say I think we can beat the Aussies and then be tearing my hair out with nerves before we face the USA come September. It is the way of things

Notch - I've never been able to big up Wales or make grandiose predictions of greatness, I just don't think I'm capable of doing that!
I understand why people do though, and enjoy watching the back peddling when the times of matches come nearer
Stag - I wouldn't say building yourself is necessarily something that's used as amunition, it's just that I look at it as someone/ a team, setting themselves up for a VERY big fall. Don't see the need for it. And I think the underdog thing might just be very deeply ingrained in the Welsh mentality. We don't play well when we are favourites and I can't recall a time in recent years when we have.

Very odd. Every other site I use is loading normally but this one is periodically slow.
True lucky. The previous four matches were error-strewn messes, and yet the last match was good so we exercise our right to collective amnesia as far as the rest of the tournament goes
