The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Well done Pete. I am in the planning stage of some DIY myself. If I get a spurt on I may manage it before Xmas.

I really like Dire Straights it occurs to me. I used to think they were very samey, but now I realise they are actually a band made up of decent musicians singing truely popular songs with a bit of craft to em like. Agree?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Glas - definitely agree.
And I actually can't hack too much more work today so have snuck back on here. Got a friend in the IT dpeartment who says they're so inundated at the mo they can't monitor everything properly (including internet usage) so should be able to spend a bit more time on here during the day. Will get given the heads up once IT sort themselves out!
I quite like doing a bit of DIY although my extent of it is being able to change a washer in a tap, not had to do that for a couple of years though so have probs forgotten how to do it....

Dreamer do you reckon they really monior the internet usage? Or is it just a bluff to make employees think they do?

Rodders - it's probably mostly bluff. I've gotten away for the past year with using the internet a fair bit and nothing's ever happened. We just had a warning e-mail last week though about it so am just a bit wary. Lots of changes going on here at work so you just never know!
Reckon I should be okay though

I'm not quite sure that companies actively monitor Internet usage by user, but they will have software that monitors and produces reports of internet activity.

Yeah I know about that nottins but I wonder what level of detail these output, especially in a work enviroment were people use the internet as part of their work?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
When I was under contract with a Government Agency, they had a report each month on each persons internet usage.
I was on the 'naughty step' once, for being in the top 10 (or should that be bottom 10) internet users.
Then I sussed out the report was based on the number of different addresses accessed, so used to just leave myself signed in to Scrum V , then later 606
So Dreamer, I guess you'd better ask you friend on what basis it will be monitored

I'm lead to believe that our IT department have filters in place and in general unless you are on sites which are flagged as inappropriate then your grand in general, but all of your useage is logged and can be called upon if needed.

I'm not very good at DIY, although that's only because I've never been shown how to DIM. It's the same with cooking - it's just a matter of how many recipes you know.

Thats what I would have thought Mikado. A lot of sites are blocked in here like vimeo, twitter, jobsites, hardcore prawn etc. but I'd have though that general usage wouln't be monitored unless there was a reason to check the logs.

It will give a breakdown of sites by user and minutes spent, I believe they're customisable to provide as much or as little information required. Also, without monitoring software, it will be possible to query the proxy as to what sites users have viewed.

I love working in an SME.
Aye Lucky, it's the same as cooking in that if you understand the basics you should be able to turn your hand to most things and only need help on very complicated/unusual stuff. Blindly following the instructions in a manual without having a feel for what is going on is only of limited use.

Okay, a related question: if I use my employer's wifi on my phone, will they be able to see which websites I visit?

It will ALL be logged, that's what a proxy server does, as well as caching web pages amongst other stuff.

Yes. They could do that pretty easily. But they might choose not to.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
well I know that sites like twitter and shopping sites are banned here completely.
Things like facebook are monitored, it comes up with a warning so you only use them in your official breaks.
Thinks like v2 and old 606 didn't come with any warnings so I assumed they weren't monitored that much.
If what nottins says is true though and they can monitor by user etc I might end up on said 'naughty step'

Ok cheers nottins. You seem to know a fair be bit about this. Any tips on how to beat the system?
Relax dreamer just tell them 606 v2 is work related.

It depends. If you have to login to the domain to access the internet, then yes. If you just have to provide the encryption key to connect to the router then the answer is yes and no. They will know what web pages a specific device has accessed, but unless you've provided them with the MAC (Media Access Control) of your phone then they won't be able to prove it was you.

Install the prox client relevant to the proxy server you're company is using. Two problems with this, you have to know what the proxy server is, most companies don't allow you to view your internet settings unless you have "local admin" rights, you also need "local admin" to install the software. Another way round it is to create your own proxy server but you'll need the help of a friendly network person....

Ok cheer nottins. I have admin rights so option one might be a goer maybe. However I'd say I'd probably get in more bother installing a proxy client that I would for excessive browsing!

Installing a proxy (unless that's the type of thing you do in your job) will make you look sketchy! My tip is just don't miss deadlines because you're surfing, which we're all too clever for!

If you Explore the proxy server, the you should be able to find the software fairly easily. It's a while since I've used one as working in IT, we tend to have open internet access anyway, but you should be able to turn off and on bypassing the proxing via a tick box.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Thanks nottins. I'll take my chances, I'm allowed to browse as part of my job but obviously excessive social browesing is not looked favourably upon!
Like Mick say I think the best approach is not to miss deadlines.
