Yes, Richard Fox was on the commentary team on Ch 7 here. He was so quietly spoken, humble and calm but he must have been screaming for her inside. Even after she had won you wouldn't have known she was her father. Her Mum is also her coach... of French origin. What a team.
Mallory Franklin did so well too. I thought she had the gold wrapped up with her time because it doesn't take much to clip a gate or lose a second or two... the margins for error are tiny on such a course.

I saw some Aussie win a swimming race. He had the least Aussie name I've ever seen. Izaac Stubblety-Cook.
Is that his competing name? Is his real name Bruce Drongo?
You've obviously missed a few, Tino. They've had quite a few wins (upsetting the American all-time champ twice) and a world record as well.
All in know about IS-C is he seems a good bloke and obviously peaked at the right time. He was very humble (when speaking to the press just afterwards) and he timed his finish to perfection. Just like our girl Ariarne Titmus... a good name as well. She did it twice.
Interesting combination of names I agree. Does that mean there has been a surname 'Stubblety' for many generations or did someone make a spelling mistake when filling out a birth certificate and it has stuck ever since?
Some steam building up on the golf thread again. Just wondering what's the best angle to approach Super's 'lifeboat' post. It's a very sad scenario with desperate folks risking it all to try and come across the Channel. Can't understand how some people are so heartless to call it a taxi service.
Can't find the lifeboat post. Super_Insecure (a very apt name - nice one, Tino) clearly argues just for the sake of it. Most of the time, if you post something rational he'll ignore it completely.

It's probably about 24 posts back up the thread... a few of hours ago now.
The one with the Farage - RNLI (had to google it and saw something about a Lifeguard or coastguard) reference.
It was posted at 18:18 here so what's that... 09:18 your time? Ben's just touched on it about 15 minutes ago.

Its been bizarre. Given the response (which is probably 98-99% pro RNLI) I can only think that Farago was only doing it to gain attention, because that is the only way he'll get any viewers for GBeebies.

Inspired by Goodfellas (the film, not the pizza), I'm tempted to start every response to him with "hey f*cko". Don't think it would take long for him to snap. Just a pity that Navy is not around to ban me for it.

Concentrating on clown sports is the way to impress on the medals table, hasn't done the Chinese any harm. Especially now that rowing golds aren't guaranteed.

It was a pretty amazing spectacle once I'd realised that stealing someones handbag whilst going full tilt on a childs bike doesn't score extra merit points.
I have 2 other observations from the Olympics today. Firstly, the more I see and unfortunately hear from Dan Walker, the more I think my nomination of him in the C*nt Cup was justified and secondly, it is all kicking off in the swimming. Some US dude basically accusing the Russian sat next to him of cheating. Bring back the Cold War is what I say.

The meltdown on the rugby boards makes for great reading, everyone demanding that all their opponents are sent off.
I remember back in the day when a decent bout of fisticuffs was resolved by one player from each team being sent to cool down behind the posts for 5 minutes.

Lucky he was at the back when that happened. He could have taken the entire team out.
Looks like it was around the area where the bars join the frame, maybe even the frame itself that broke. Spectacular fall but glad the guy is OK.
Interesting seeing them fix the track afterwards with duct tape.

Oh and the rugby forums. Don't know if I should laugh or despair. I haven't seen the 2nd match other than a couple of clips but the discussions about a couple of decisions could run for weeks. You have to wonder if any rugby worth talking about was played at all.
I love how the Lions are supposed to bring all the supporters together.
You also have to love the default position of quite a few, which is to respond to the fact that the back three got no ball at all to do anything by getting rid of them.

Laughter and despair work in equal measure. The supporters who are brought together are the ones who go on tour with the Lions, which obviously isn't happening this time round. I'm tempted to blame it all on AWJ's lack of leadership to see the reaction of the Welsh contingent but it might be more than I can handle.

Only saw some 'highlights' too so didn't see any of the supposed controversial moments. It sounds as though the game has lost its focus if what some are saying is true with players trying to get the referee to send off opposing players. There's certainly inconsistencies with interpretations of the laws amongst both officials (and of course fans) but it's not nice to hear some coaches being so outspoken, disrespectful and spiteful in the post match washdown.
I have the view that we perhaps had a golden age of rugby in the 90s and 00s but it started to get too over-officiated around a decade ago. Add to that the heavy infiltration of social media, intensifying 'social' discourse into the game and certain players' indiscreet actions off-field being very quickly exposed... and you have what we have now. An over-sensitive, over-governed almost paranoid atmosphere which is the opposite to the entertaining and positive aspects of the rugby that I've enjoyed watching over the years.
Sort of agree with Biltong and aucklandlaurie to some extent (red card only for seriously brutal and intentional infringements)... but keep/add taking out the legs when going for the high ball to their red card list. I'm all for fairly contesting the high ball though. At the moment it favours the defending player a little too much.

I don't buy aucklandlaurie's idea about replacing the sent off player, as it basically encourages taking out opposition players.
I have always found the AWJ thing interesting because every nation has its special players that would struggle to have an impact in other teams, but have legendary status at home. Not that he isn't very good, its just the lack of competition, the avoidance of injury and some decent leadership skills have combined to give him an incredibly long career at the top.
Anyway too much rugby, even if its nice to discuss it without the partisan tensions
