SURREY VITALITY BLAST SOUTH GROUP 2024

Surrey have named a 14 man squad for their opening game away to Hampshire Hawks in the Vitality Blast on Thursday 30th at the Utilita Bowl
Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Chris Jordan and Reece Topley are away with England and will miss at least the first eight games. Crying or Very sad

Ollie Pope will captain whilst Chris Jordan is away.
Tom Curran, Laurie Evans, Spencer Johnson and Jason Roy are named in a squad for the first time this season.
There is no place in the squad for Matt Dunn, Ben Geddes, Conor McKerr or Ryan Patel.
Ben Foakes has joined Jamie Overton on the treatment table.
There is still no update on Tom Lawes Rolling Eyes

Things are bad when Burns and Sibley are named in a T20 squad, I'd hope that both will be practising drink duties.
Final spot will probably be between Clark and Steel and if the wkt is like the county game than Steel will probably edge it.

Cheers jimbob, you've missed Burns and Curran off the list, but worked it out from your write up! As you say, absolutely pointless Burns and Sibley being included, Patel would've been a better option. I think(hope) Clark plays ahead of Steel.....but I don't really hold much interest in this competition

Yeah, quite possibly, JimBob.

After our Championship hammering at Hants last week, I suspect a lot of sides will look to play us on a used track suitable for spin in all formats when we are away from the Oval. Although I’m no great fan of Steel, that increases the chances of him being in the eleven on the basis there’s little or nothing in the wicket for our seamers.

Pope's poor form also continued with a 3 ball duck although fortunately Jamie Smith's excellence shone through with 76 off 38 - including 8 sixes - which gave us a total beyond Glamorgan's reach.

The Welsh commentators intimated he was 'injured' but your next post says unchanged jimbob, so it must only have been something minor, strange the way Clark didn't bowl the previous night, Curran this, then Worrall 'rested' after bowling a massive 2 overs! Don't know about TC but Lawes might be back around the end of the week. Overton much longer. Foakes probably in between.

Wouldn't be surprised if we stick with the same eleven who beat Glamorgan. That means another game for Cam ''none for twenty off one'' Steel which wouldn't be my choice but there you go!

Happily accept the two wins out of two but Somerset will be a harder nut to crack.

6 pm start on a Sunday is highly inconvenient for many.

Jamie Smith is giving me real Harry Brook vibes from his breakthrough season. Brook was in a good Yorks batting line up, with a few internationals but just kept looking the most dangerous batter. Smith has been the same most times I've watched him this season. Surrounded by former or current England batters, he keeps standing out. The power against seamers, then how quickly he punishes missed length from spinners. Some talent.

Huge batting talent. Test batsman in waiting.

And that's why I would prefer him to concentrate on that rather than run the risk of it being diluted by keeping for England.

In his 3 Blast games this season, Steel has bowled 1 over in each and in order from the start has gone for 20, 14 and 12. If he continues the sequence and plays another couple of years, he might bowl a maiden. Rolling Eyes

Sussex make 213/7 off their 20. Likely to be too many for us. To have any chance, one or probably two Surrey batters will need to get in and go big.

Although we've won 3 out of 3 so far this season, there have been times in each game where we've been behind before turning it around. Fear tonight may be when it comes unstuck ....

Another disjointed performance, carrying too many players, and after the usual dreadful start from Evans and Lawrence there was never a chance, and again, only one knock worth a mention. I'd rather Patel/Geddes played than the over the hill mercenaries Evans and Roy, and not sure of the point of Steel and Clark

Watched second half of our innings online. Appalling collapse and play from Surrey.

We snatched a tie from the jaws of victory! And the tie in those circumstances feels more like a defeat.

Credit to Gloucs for battling hard but extremely poor from Surrey. Of the 22 players taking part tonight, I doubt that many neutral followers would have more than two of the Gloucs team in a combined side.
