The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I actually ended up not going, my hayfever was making me kissable and I didn't fancy sitting in a cinema sneezing all evening! Not too disappointed though, tickets were free. I read the review of it anyway and it wasn't great by most accounts.
Off to Cork today, should be a bit of Craic!

Mickado - awh that's a shame but it's better than showing yourself up and annoying the others by sneezing and wheezing all night Enjoy yourself down in Caark
Prop - there was all sorts because the Irish, Welsh and English fans were singing their own songs, then there was a group of French fans singing in the corner too

It was a wonderful melting pot. Haven't a clue what was sung, think Hughie was leading the charge for us Irish anyway. Love it when that type of things happen, a whole lot of love in that room!

I remember (not in any particular order) hearing:
Fields of Athenry
Swing Low Sweet Chariot
A bit of Sosban Fach
The National anthems of France, Ireland and Wales
Cockles & Mussels
Come on you Boys in Blue...
Some other Irish and Welsh folk songs...
I was sober

Lucky - he specified rugby, but let's not even go there. Like Is aid, he could've posted a thread about it outside. Call it market research.
have you seen the photo of Mike Phillips being sat on by a bouncer? It made me laugh

Mickado - there were a few songs being sung, but I didn't know all of them. There was that bald guy at the bar singing quite a bit. He had a good voice too if I remember.

Nottins - good question and certainly one not meant for the outside boards. I would say no but I'm willing to bet there is NZ/Aus offensive songs about each other.

Bore da pawb/Good morning all, hope everyone's well, it's Friday
Glas - have a fab weekend!
I loved the singsong we had in the Westgate, was ace, and I even remember a fair bit of that
Hound and Penfro - just to give you two a heads up but I won't be going to the beer and cider festival today. Haven't been feeling 100% all week and my sister is up visiting me tomorrow so don't want to be hungover/ill when she's here! Hope you two have a great time

Apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick, Nottins.
Cari, I've seen the photos and the article now. Mike Phillips doesn't do himself any favours, does he?
He comes across as an angry man - and as the Bees sang, 'an angry man needs attention.'

Kia ora, mauri ora all.
Kiwis and Aussies don't really sing at sports events, so we don't really have any offensive songs. Some short and often crude chants happen, but that's about it.
Though I do enjoy pointing out to the Aussies that you can summarise Waltzing Matilda as
"man runs away with sheep, gets chased and drowns himself rather than be caught, then haunts the spot".

OK thanks just wondering. Yeah can't say I agree with singing songs like that. I don't think it's appropriate in Rugby, or anywhere else really.

Hi all, had a really greasy breakfast today with a really nice cup of coffee
And its pay day today. Slight alarm bells at work yesterday evening. My boss tried to do my Probation Performance Review which means that I'd have to give him 1 months notice to leave the company.
I explained situation to him and we agreed on a 2 week notice period. Ideal result and its won me a reference from him.

Good work on the notice period, have you definitely got the job ?
Talking of alarm bells, got to the hotel last night at around 22:30 and the fire alarm was going off. No fire, so went to my room. It stopped and then started again, this went on for about 10 minutes. Asked reception what had happened and someone had removed a sensor from it's ceiling socket so they could smoke in their room. They only have to open the room door and they're outside on a balcony area. And they got charged £50 to remove the evidence of smoke from the room.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Hi all. Great news Stag. You've managed to extract yourself from that job on good terms with a reference whilst still getting to, you know... get the hell out of there and into something better! Result
Got into work today in a torrential downpour, only to find that the school sports day I'm meant to be covering has been cancelled due to the atrocious weather. They gave me a tenner (much more than hourly rate that) for turning up regardless. So I headed home, but I wanted to save £1.70 so I walked. It wasn't a great idea, the rain is exceptionally heavy and having left at 9.10 I just arrived in. I'm quite wet.
Think I'm going to need to find either a new part-time job or do voluntary work, because this place is not giving me enough shifts. I have one tomorrow and two next week.
You can tell by the huge amount of posts I've made on here recently I really need something to do; all the better if I can get paid for it. Not optimistic babout the second part but I've gotta try eh? Job centre later.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Nottins, you had to be in that pub on that evening to realise it was all just a great laugh. There were fans from all over in there as well a decent contingent of SF fans.
The Irish, Scottish and Welsh anthems were sung, then the French let rip with a truncated Le Marsellaise. That lot was followed by the Quins fans' rendition of 'Swing Low'.
I turned to Mickado and said "I know what's coming next". And sure enough.....
I looked at Penfro and knew he had started it - the grin on his face said it all. Trust me, everyone was laughing - it was all taken in good spirit.
As I said, you had to be there.

No further score, Blues win 33-16 - not the prettiest of games in the final period, the rain making handling difficult. Looks like Ali Williams is well on the road back to his best. Rokocoko still has gas, and Afoa will be a rock for Ulster

Asbo - when I was younger Ali Williams was one of my favourite players. Seriously glad to see him back to best. He played against Munster A in the British and Irish Cup for Nottingham a shadow of his former self.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
OK folks economics/ political question....
Osbourne is in NI today to discuss this lowering of the corporation tax rate in NI. Basically this will cost us 385m in our block grant, which is a significant amount. I'm pretty concerned about this, probably because our politicians are all muppets, as is Osbourne. There's no guarantee that this will grow the private sector here and the reduced block grant will further cut our public services. That said we need bold moves here to generate private sector growth.
I'd be interested to know what the people on here across the spectrum feel about this as this move could have a significant impact across the whole uk and Ireland too.
From the Southern Irish folks: can a lower rate have the impact it had in the south? Will it damage the south?
How do the UK people feel? Will this damage other parts of Britain? Will the Welsh and Scots push for this now too if it goes ahead?

I feel it's really a bad idea. It's going to cost us money in tax revenue that we are unlikely to recoup. I feel, in my unprofessional opinion, the timing is wrong for this to have any genuine impact on growth in the private sector because the economy is so poor anyway. There's not much investment going around. It doesn't seem like they've done any real assessment of the cost/benefit, they just assume that it will be a miracle cure for private sector growth. I need to see research showing this will significantly positively effect the private sector before I feel good about it, but there is none that suggests this will be a genuine catalyst- at least in the short-term. The 'Build it, and they will come' philosophy. Someone should tell them they are trying to run a blydi economy, not Field of Dreams.
But it will cost us in tax revenue and have a knock-on effect on other areas that need attention. That tax revenue issue doesn't affect the rest of the UK, just NI. Their happy t let us go ahead with it because it's purely on our own head; as it should be in a devolved state. But so many local politicians oppose spending cuts and are now favouring a tax cut. I'd like to see a few more brains on the hill, if we're going to try and have our cake and eat it the local politicos better think it all the way through
The sad thing is, at the last election I did some research and every party supported it. I stood there in the polling booth thinking "I feel duty bound to vote for someone, but damned if there's actually any one decent to vote for".

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Thanks Notch, yes I have similar concerns. I'd feel better if I could see some concrete research or figures of projected growth which would balance out the lost money in the block grant.
The lost revenue won't effect anywhere else in the UK but if it does work in terms of attracting business, likely they would come from other parts of the UK and Ireland and be detrimental to these places. It is a very risky strategy that I'm not convinced has been thought through. If companies start relocating to Belfast from Edinburgh, Cardiff, London and Dublin then what sort of impact would this have?

Actually, I think we've touched upon the debate but we shouldn't get too deep into it in this forum.
If we go off on a tangent re. Ulster Rugby, at least we're talking rugby. NI politics aren't what this joint is for
Glad to hear Afoa and Payne are looking good Asbo! Good times a coming

There's how to clear a pub!
