The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Portnoy,is the point of pre-season to try and give fringe players gametime and see if they can break into the first team you already know what some guys can do for your team so why not give other people time to see what they can do? It's not like you see a lot of the main guys for soccer teams get a lot of game time in pre season.

Portnoys, I think the point is it's not treated as a serious match regardless of team line-ups. In fact a weaker team may put more on the line in pre-season as compared to guys who feel sure of their place.

Really can't wait. Have a friendly on Saturday hopefully, so that'll be good. Yes it does stop me playing as much as I'd like, even without the three month "holiday" I always have with work. I'd loved to have done more pre-season work for example, but I'm not too unfit really. But then after an 18 month break it's all new to me again and so any game/training session is a bonus.
Moving things that go bang Nottins.

Pre-season games are still paying games.
The point is - especially away ones - the punters are attracted by the brand name of the opposition.
Pitching up with a bunch of wannabes is disrespectful to the hosts.
Even if the iconic players only play cameo parts, that's what the crowd expect to see.
That's the way I see it and for the same reason I urged the Tigers not to play Irish sides to play pre-seasons again.

I see and can understand you point Portnoy. However surely rugby is what is important and not the names.
I mean Munster v Tigers pre season last year was AMAZING, especially for the Tigers fans who got to see their side get a late match winner.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Portnoy,if you expect big name stars to play in most pre season friendlies then you're deluded. I have been to many pre season games with my local soccer team featuring big clubs and the biggest star I have seen is Roy Keane and he was the manager.

Personally I would prefer to see a mix and match Tigers v Tigers full-on training game than a Leinster game in pre-season.
Unless they change their away disrespect to the paying public.

Dismissing talented youths as "wannabes" are far more disrepsectful IMO.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It's not disrespectful it is wha happens in pre-season. I imagine that the Rebles won't bring many 1st teamers to Leinster or that London Wasps will bring many first teamers when they come to Munster.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I've got tickets for Leinster vs Melbourne Rebels the night before Ireland vs France. I don't really care if the big names are out (Leinsters certainly won't be) I just want to see a good game of rugby.
I remember in 2008, Queensland Reds sent a development side of unknowns on their tour of Ireland in our pre-season. We beat them 24-0.
Looking back now seeing how Will Genia, Scott Higginbotham, James Horwill, Rod Davies, Anthony Fainga'a, Digby Ioane etc. ahve come on since I watched them play at Ravenhill is pretty cool. Many of the players involved have gone on to higher honours.
I like seeing up and coming players. I'm sure had they played at Welford Road you would have scoffed that you were wasting time playing 'wanabees'

Nothing “disrespectful” about that team. 8 of those were in the squad that played the tigers in Lansdowne.
And the tigers even signed one of the youngsters this year, can't have been all bad!

Fine.
If that's the way you want it. Then that's OK.
But there was a lot of disgruntlement in Leicester about a shadow side turning up. The consensus was oh dear off elsewhere if you want a practice game.

But surely that is the entire point of pre-season?
I mean, thats the purpose of arranging these games. The only purpose.

Portnoy,Munster played the Tigers at home last year. There were 4 internationals starting with another 2 coming off the bench. For a first preseason game that's not bad.

Geordan Murphy, Leicester Tigers
Tigers kick-off pre-season programme
8 August 2011, 12:40 pm
By Andy Mann
Geordan Murphy will make his return from injury when Leicester Tigers take on Montpellier in a training game in southern France this evening.
Murphy, who missed a large chunk of last season with an ankle injury, is in the Ireland training squad ahead of the World Cup and has linked up with his Tigers teammates for the start of their summer camp in St Affrique and to play in this evening's fixtures.
The game in Millau (kick-off 8pm local time) is the only fixture of Tigers' French training camp and Murphy starts at full-back.
The Tigers club captain is joined in the back three by Mathew Tait and there are starts for new signings Kieran Brookes, Graham Kitchener and Julian Salvi. Niall Morris, another of the summer arrivals, is expected to get some time from the bench.
Leicester Tigers
15 Geordan Murphy
14 Scott Hamilton
13 Billy Twelvetrees
12 Anthony Allen
11 Mat Tait
10 George Ford
9 James Grindal
1 Boris Stankovich
2 Rob Hawkins
3 Kieran Brookes
4 Ed Slater
5 Graham Kitchener
6 Ben Woods
7 Julian Salvi
8 Thomas Waldrom
Is what I'd call respectful from the resource available. Despite the result...

Im getting sick of beating Tigers and sending them our reject academy players at this stage... So the Welford Road crowd should be honoured just playing the best team in Europe's 2nds, at any stage of the season. Just sayin...

But Leinster named their strongest available team for that game from the resources they had available... none of the players missing were available for selection

We have had 20 people resign in the last 6 weeks. They are trying to address this. They asked if I would fill up a form saying how I found working here good and bad and then do the exit interview.
The interview is manditory but I could do the "more money and closer to home" thing if I wanted. I'll do it properly. The bloke in HR is a nice lad and they are trying to address a problem. Its no skin off my teeth to do it. It won't last an hour anyway but on my schedule it is listed as an hour.

Really? Thats what most people do and have a ciggie and cup of tea for rest of it as a nice break on their last day.
My interview won't take more than 15-20 minutes in reality.
