First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence

So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Not necessarily but thats a different debate. Sometimes they go hand in hand but there are other factors that influence a result beyond the performance like luck, the referee, the opposition performance, individual error, the bounce of the ball etc.

My definition of a great performance is one when you leave the stadium thinking; nothing could have changed the result today. Not only beating a team, but beating them entirely convincingly so that the losing side can have zero complaints about the result regardless of any of those factors you list. Whether you are on the receiving end or you are the delighted victor, it's clear that everything went well and the winning side dominated the game to a certain extent.

What happens where your team probably plays the best game it ever has yet still loses because the other team is just better?

Right, tooth is out, bleeding loads and very uncomfortable.

Now, I've not been in much recently, and am feeling that I have missed something.

Portnoy appears to have a serious monk on again with the pub, and am I right in thinking that Rava has disappeared for some reason?

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Portnoy,is well being Portnoy. Rava, left as he didn't like the direction the place was going in. He was talking about the arguments in here recently and I think he felt that a clique was being formed.

Rava wrote:This will be my last ever post in this Pub.

Since the move from the BBC forum the overall theme in the pub has changed from one of general rugby chat interspersed with some interesting conversations and a bit of light-hearted banter. Overall the pub regulars seemed to get on very well and I think this was evident when we (most of us) met up in Cardiff.
Lately there has been too much niggle going on. People picking up on a "tone" in a written post?? And generally a lack of good rugby debate. There are too many Moderators/Administrators who are now "regs" and I can only see disaster ahead. It is not for me to make personal judgements but I would say to the Mods in here - be very careful and ensure you are always impartial. I haven't been posting a lot over the past while but I have been reading a lot and really don't like where this place is heading.

I have made a lot of very good friends from my time on BBC and in here. Some of you will be friends for life and will go beyond rugby chat. I would hate to get involved in debates that might jepordise any of these friendships.

I will keep in touch via facebook and personal messaging and if any of you want to contact me please use these means.

Please, please be careful where you are heading with this forum.

Hug to you all.

Here you go Pete.

We're talking in the context of the top 5/6 test nations here. You know, if Connacht were to go over to Toulouse and lose by a single point we could say that was a great performance. Even in Ireland were to lose by a super-fine margin in New Zealand we could maybe say that.

But generally, I think in the test arena everybody is capable of beating everybody else. I actually do think we played very well against New Zealand a few times. But we did let ourselves down as well with a few individual and collective errors.

There is such a thing as being unnecessarily honest though. Not everything needs to be said. Discretion is important.

Same here but as I said, it's up to us to make this pub what it is rather than just stop posting.

Does Portnoy have a beef? I've not seen that.

Anyway, if I have passed my exam, I have been asked to play for Risca firsts tonight v Ebbw Vale. Ebbw Vale are not too bad a side (as most of you will know) and I've not played for the firsts for at least 6 years. I'm going to tear it up (exam permitting).

Did I mention I'm in a hospitality box for the Wales v England game tomorrow? Wink

Munster, maybe the atmosphere was better when we were squabbling, you jackass Wink

There are always going to be errors though.

We might be talking about the top 5/6 Test nations here but the difference between us and New Zealand is still vast no matter what we'd like to think. Like the game in Novemeber where we played pretty damn well yet we still lost quite convincingly.

Yeah but even if you do that it's still not that nice a place.

We're also, allegedly, the most most violent city in Europe. I don't believe that myself but I saw it on the Chris Moyles show on Channel 4 last night.

Both places get/got on my wick a lot of the time. I'm generally on the outside of most conversations if I'm honest, so it's nice for me to take a break too. Probably due another one soon.

I was relieved you came back though. It isn't a bad standard really As. A long way out of my comfort zone of Risca 2nds definitely.

Cheers Thom, Line and Nottins.

I know I kid on about being ignored, but I do understand that conversations happen around my posts. My timing is all wrong.

Newport would have made it to number one though judging for m the Welsh people's comments on it.

I've just shaken hands with and said goodbye to someone who's finishing work here today. It's the strangest feeling to say goodbye to someone you may never see again, when you've seen them every day at work for so long.

Yeah, it's weird isn't it lucky? Very similar to myself finishing my undergraduate degree. Except we got to have a big urine-up and burn some meat.

In the States, at my brothers workplace, they just turn up on the day with two security guards and a HR bot when redundancy is on the cards. You're escorted from the building under their strict supervision and given two weeks paid leave rather than being served with any kind of notice in advance.

Notch, I remember talking to people from my course after our last exam. It's not enjoyable. I saw most of them at our graduation ceremony but it wasn't the same.

Indeed. I found graduation to be a really weird experience. Kind of surreal. Didn't fell like a landmark. When I got my results back was the big moment. By the time the ceremony came around I had already moved on in my head.

It's a weird feeling saying goodbye and knowing something, however small has ended. Something I have always struggled with personally.

I remember my last day at school making a conscious effort to remember everything about it, from the bus there to the bus home.

I went to my 10 year school reunion. I couldn't remember half of the names of the kids I had spent my entire young life with.

20 years coming up next year. I don't think I'll even bother going.
