The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I spent half an hour with some guy enthusiastically filling me in on what he had been up to, I was a complete blank.
At one point he just stopped and said "You don't even know my name do you?" I didn't lie to him, I probably should have.

To be fair he probably had an unfair advantage, I mean you're not likely to forget a name like "greybeard" are you?

I don't like the idea of reunions like that. It's better to remember things and people as they were. If you bump into someone, that's another matter. But it'll never be the same as it was, so why pretend?

I did run into a girl I went to school with (when I was still a teenager). She was a quite mean back then in a sort of popular girl american high school girl way*, so I affected not to remember her name knowing this was the most potent of revenges for her. Not to be hated, but to be forgotten!

To be fair Glas, I was 12-14 when I knew her and I think about 16 again when I met her having moved to the other side of the country so wasn't really at the casual sex stage.

I'm the kind of person that likes the idea of the reunion. I'm not stupid enough to think that I'll talk to everyone but there are a few people there that I did have some really good times with and just because I don't stay in touch with them now doesn't mean they are just out of my life.

See, for me, because I don't keep in touch with them now... means they are indeed out of my life. People are just different eh?
I still have a bunch of people on facebook I don't really engage with.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I know what you mean MBTGOG, but I found the reunion incredibly depressing. Grown men sitting around in a pub talking about getting in trouble with some random teacher (who they still talk about in disparaging terms) just seemed so wasteful.
I wanted to say that I'd had plans, and I achieved them. I did stuff. I developed as a human being.
But if I did that I'd probably have embarrassed everyone. Can't have a guy opening up like that.

But those good times you had will always be good times, Munsty. The question is whether you want to add a potentially awkward, forced encounter to your memories.

We had our first school reunion last year, 27 years after leaving. A lot of them I don't remember, but there were over 350 in our year, so it's not surprising.

Exactly. I was at one of my best school friend's wedding recently. We've hardly seen each other in the past ten years and although it's a bit awkward to find common ground to chat about as we have so little in common anymore, you never lose the bond you share with people, even if you grow apart as people.

Afternoon All
Finished early after an enjoyable week in another office. Hopefully I'll get posted there permanently.
Risca - congrats on getting picked for the rugby team. Hope you have a good, injury free game
All I will say about the pub is can the doubters read my closing speech from the last one? I thought I'd summed up the pub ethos there.

Oh yeah I'd put locations in Cardiff at the top of the list.
I've posted my closing speech on Portnoys pub thread for what it's worth. Clearly it means feck all to some.

Afternoon all, having a busy day at work
My primary school is holding it's 150th jubilee next month. And no I'm not trekking home for it . I did go to some bits the 125th admittedly - but then again I was 10 years old and still attending the school so didn't have much choice in the matter ...

If you go into with that attitude/idea in mind then it most likely will be. It would be my choice to go so not being forced and I'm close enough to quite a few that there is always that comfort blanket if needed but I'd doubt I'd use it.

All right for some Breadvan.
I'm not doing much this weekend - can't wait for the hurling semi final on Sunday. I'll watch the the Tri-Nations and then the Wales games online tomorrow as well.

England should bat on, really hammer the Indians into the ground, make 750 and still have 2 days to bowl them out.

Isn't that a bit unfair in the same series where India allowed England to have their batter come in even though they didn't have to?

Really should bat on, see if Cook can beat Goochs 333 or even Huttons 364.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It often does, Munsty. The conditions and the type of wickets you get come in to play, so for example English bowlers have more experience of English conditions and are more likely to make best use of them. You get real bounce on some wickets in Australia, so home players might be better equipped for that.

It's all a bit underwhelming, isn't it? There's been the odd session where India have had the upper hand, but otherwise it's been all England. It's great to see us so dominant, but India by and large have looked, well, meek I suppose.

Everything.
It's not only the local climate and conditions in which the youngsters learn their game but at test level the home nations more or less instruct the venue groundsman to prepare a home-friendly pitch.
re myself:
There is no imaginable excuse for this Indian capitulation.
This is one of the worst 'sporting' encounters I have ever witnessed.
It is terrible.
It's like seeing Oz being beaten by 30 points in three successive away tests against Wales in a series.
Rubbish.
