The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Lionel Nallet photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Notch, I'd ask why it's taken Brian Mujati until now to make the allegations.

Notch wrote:Bit of a furore this morning; Brian Mujati posted on twitter that he was racially abused by the two Saffers in Leinsters pack during the Leinster vs Northampton game last night; calling him a baboon during scrums etc.
I've e-mailed Leinster about it suggesting they launch an investigation, and it's been seen by quite a few people, but he's taken it down now. Hopefully he is going to make a complaint through the proper channels.
This instant twiterring is dangerous. This is NOT the Leinster Way. Anyone can post that. Remember the Horan affair? Mujati better have proof or he will be ostracised. So easy to call foul racist play. Its an old trick.
However, if they are found guilty - they should be suspended. Give him a truth/lie test. Let him prove it.

Gibbo - you're right about Twitter and Facebook being dangerous sometimes. I think that's why many teams ban their players using it - especially during important tournaments. There's an All Black I follow on Facebook and he's not going to be around from now on until after the World Cup he said. They've been barred using it.

Cari,
I doubt it will be even near the same quality. Lots of bish-bosh and positional kicking from us - with ROG playing We are nowhere near those 2 sides. France on a good day - maybe. Lets be honest here.

What, a Polygraph? Surely the first step should be to ask all the other eye-witnesses and see if his story can be backed up. If it's in Afrikaans its gonna be a bit more difficult to prove or disprove, unless the likes of Jamie Hagan have hitherto unknown language skills
If it's true, they should lose their jobs. It's not an appropriate example to set for a leading Irish sports team to employ someone found guilty of racial abuse. If found innocent, I'd lose a lot of respect for Mujati. He's removed the comments now. He may have made them on the spur of the moment whether they are true or not and regret it. But it's very important that the truth of what transpired comes out.
However, and I stress this, lets treat all parties as innocent until proven guilty. This morning I was calling for Leinster to announce an investigation. They have done that; lets wait and see what happens next.

Calling a black player a Baboon is a lot different to calling someone a chicken. The connotation of referring to black as monkeys is that they are inferior by dint of their race.

Notch - true - everyone is innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. As I said, at least Leinster are taking the complaint seriously, and haven't chosen to dismiss it before even looking into it which is a good thing.

Totally agree. I hate racism. Hate where it lives. But, it goes on in scrums.English & Irish players are famous for it. "English basterd" "Paddy bombers" Then they smile and have a pint afterwards. Mujati should just take it as part of the game and hurt them on the field. I wonder what he said in return to those Saffers? IF it is true.

Notch, no offence , but dont you think Leinster were doing that anyway? Of couse they were. It runs against everything we are. Everything we believe in. I hope you have the same attitude, when the Ulster Saffers do the same thing. And one of them will. Its their way.

If that happened in my workplace, I would report it and I would expect the person in question to face very serious disciplinary action. Okay, in the scrum there is going to be a bit of sledging but there are some lines that should never be crossed regardless of what kind of situation you find yourself in.

Okay, now I know you're on the WUM. If an Ulster player said something like that, I'm not sure I would be comfortable with them playing for Ulster. It goes against the values of the game and reflects poorly on Irish Rugby.

To be fair, he makes a good point. You sound ridiculous. Your two examples very clearly have no racial connotations whereas the phrase 'baboon' clearly does.

Half and half Notch. The odds are stacked against anyone white, saying anything untoward non-whites. Is that fair? No its not. Is White basterd as bad as Black basterd? Think about it.

Yeah, probably. Depending on context. Obviously context is pretty crucial here.
If I was in a context where I was singled out for abuse due to the colour of my skin, I would feel it's pretty much the same.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I have a huge percentage of non-white friends. A lot of them black Saffers, Carribeans and Indian. They readily agree with me and think its gone way too far. They have used it themselves in jobs to give them an edge. Just need to nail that one down.
However, if those Saffers did say what they are accused to have said, Id hang them out to dry. Using animal comparisions is NOT on.
Yours truly,
Gibbon

He's back...
TGG claiming another TMO mistake but glossing over the trip/late tackle and the fact that the ABs were standing a few meters offside over the advantage line all night.
He's hurting - for sure.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Probably we should move on from this topic. It's very emotive and we're still waiting on the investigation to confirm it or deny it.
Big Brian Mujati has had a hard time of it though; firstly, his dad (who he's estranged from) was one of the black farmers in Zimbabwe who benefited from Mugabes eviction of white farmer families so he caught a lot of flack about that even though he personally had little or nothing to do with it. Secondly, he caught a lot of stick in SA rugby when he was selected for his first cap and he was regarded as a 'quota' player and the white BJ Botha was omitted for him. So there is a history and a context to Brian Mujati's relationship with mainstream South African rugby that may have come into play with this alleged incident.
So hopefully the investigation finds the truth of the matter and the appropriate action is taken either way.

I will inwardly digest that mo chara. This really changes things for me. Their history should make those White Saffers smart enough to learn from their past. No excuse to use it on an NH or any field. They may think they have more freedom to say derogatory shoite up here, but they dont. Not when they play for MY club.
Enough. Im hoping this is resolved and the truth will out. I dont want players like that representing me - if its true.
Mon Ireland! Believe.

Really? Is this your new Shane Jennings
We were there- he played well. He caused them problems.
Here's the Quins match report;
http://www.union.quins.co.uk/rugby/13820.php
And the report from the IRFU;
http://www.irishrugby.ie/news/23752.php
Obviously it was only a pre-season game, but I was really pleased with our performance. Still a few handling errors but a lot of guys put their hands up as well. We had a lot more players missing than them, so hope we can take the momentum onto next week and Glasgows visit to Ravenhill. Back it up when it really counts

Notch I love lost-causes. Gleeson with EOS and Jenno with Deccie. But this guy could play with Pocock and McCaw. He's huge, powerful and dynamic at the same time. He's only a baby. So give him time.
I reckon ye guys could make a shot at the PRO12 Title this year. No doubt.

Aviva? You know, I don't mind it so much now.
It reminds me of some futuristic glasshouse. Is there something which prohibited building a bigger stand there like the railway line at the end of Croke Park?
