The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Lionel Nallet photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Hurricanes are named because there can be more than one at a given time in the same region.

Question: why do they name hurricanes?
Due to their long-term persistence, and the need for a unique identifier in issuing forecasts and warnings, tropical cyclones and subtropical cyclones are given names according to policy.

I'm from the South of England, does this mean I'm in charge Notch ya wee bollix?
It's not for me to imply the Metropolitan Police have a role to play in enforcing the status quo
To be fair I like a bit of 'Rocking all over the world' Nothc, but I wouldn't force Rossi and Parfitt on the masses!
That would be truly hardline policing
Yeah forget the water cannons, couple of hours of 'we're in the army now' on repeat and the looters will be all feckin off back to their rat holes.

Pete, I have the sis and bro-in-law staying. Good people. Nice to spend time with them. He's a real soccer-head (Liverpool to the core) and had an eye on the rugby with me yesterday. Man, he came out with some innocent comments which had me searching. Good to hear his perspective. Like. "So, why is dis bollix Kidney playing with no set pattern and the lads playing with no passion. What's goin on man?"
"Errrm. Dunno really Larry. Good question"
I'm going to have to watch this game to see if Ireland were as bad as it appears they were from the comments of yourself and some of the other Irish regs Gibbo.

Good that the kids enjoyed it Pete.

I don't go for that. Why has Nature gotta be a woman huh? We got stitched-up somewhere along the line. Whatever we call it, its unstoppable, unpredictable and ever-changing.

Cari wrote:Why's Mother Nature not called Father Nature?
Mother Nature (sometimes known as Mother Earth) is a common personification of nature that focuses on the life-giving and nurturing aspects of nature by embodying it in the form of the mother. Images of women representing mother earth, and mother nature, are timeless. In prehistoric times, goddesses were worshipped for their association with fertility, fecundity, and agricultural bounty. Priestesses held dominion over aspects of Incan, Algonquian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Slavonic, Germanic, Roman, Greek, Indian, and Iroquoian religions in the millennia prior to the inception of patriarchal religions.
Also the origins of the word nature may play a part...
'The word nature comes from the Latin word, natura, meaning birth' (from wiki!!!)

Can't wait for this week to pass now, the mighty Exiles vs. the Hairy Queens at Twickers on saturday to kick the season off. I think we could struggle a bit this season and the play offs are likely to be beyond us, but we've a young squad now, so as long as they go out and give it a lash and learn through the season I'll be happy.

Quins weren't all that good at Ravenhill if it helps Pete. I was rather disappointed by them, I had talked them up big time before the match to the auld fella and they never lived up to their billing. Or maybe Ulster just didn't let them
Meh, pre-season. Means nothing really!
Pete I would class Englands performance as mediocre to poor and Irelands performance as even worse. BUT England have shown they have the tools to hurt teams with Tuilagi in the centre. Would make no sense to bring back Hape now.
Still, they really relied on some very illegal play at the breakdown and were rightly whistled out of it. Irelands failure to capitalise on the penalty count was very, very discouraging.

Pete. Same with Leinster mate. Cant wait. We have some serious backup though. Thought we had Jenno back, but now, he has to save Ireland, as predicted 3 years ago.
We have a fired up Fitz, Strauss, VD Merwe, Berquist, Ruddock, Conway, D. Kearney, Nacewa, Ryan and Mclaughlin, to help see some brilliant Academy players through. Exciting times. I Believe. I really do.

I wouldn't put much store by pre season results Notch, well at least I hope not as we've only won one match and that was against London Welsh!!!
Just about to watch the Ireland v England game now so will see what all the talking points have really been about.

If we can win the pool I think we'll make the semis Gibbo, as long as the All Blacks win their pool as well. If we get a QF against France I would fancy us, just think mentally we have the wood over them.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, they may well make a semi. Doesn't mean they're playing well right now. I imagine the best is yet to come from them though. History teaches us that it generally does as World Cups go on, they peak at the right time. They're very much going back to a stereotypical style of English rugby now after a more expansive style. No coincidence; that style of rugby works in pressure situations when flair teams can stutter. I don't think they have the tools to match their last two campaigns though. I don't rate them particularly highly; of the five teams that are realistically capable of winning the World Cup I think they are the weakest, behind South Africa. Aussies and NZ looking better.
On paper, France should thrash England. Far better side. The team that visited Dublin last weekend was far superior to the team that played on Saturday. In theory they should be by far the best hope of the NH.
But you know what France are like, I don't need to explain that.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
That's the thing Notch, England and France are almost polar opposites when it comes to World Cup performance.
It is likely that as in 2007, England will be far more than the sum of it's parts, as individually the players we had 4 years ago should have been nowhere near a World Cup final.
France on the other hand are very very likely to be far less than the sum of it's parts when they come up against England, as we have seen on so many occasions before. If France played at their best consistently, they would streets ahead of all of the other NH sides right now.

Have to say England have started very well indeed and was some clever play by Croft which fortunately the referee didn't notice off the scrum in the build up to Manu's try.
Bad positioning by Earls though. Such a talented player, but I have no idea what his best position is, and worryingly for Ireland, I am not sure that either himself or Deccie know either.

On paper? Man. No I don't think they are a far better side. Far better than us, but not England - as a unit.
What would really set the WC alight, is for France to beat NZ in their pool. All Hell would break loose and it would set the tone for others to emulate them in their Pools.
I'd love to see that happen. No offence Kiwi mate, but I would just love it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, they would. I still think they might and they are flying under the radar because of that history. My money is on France and New Zealand eliminating the Group A qualifiers and making the semis. I just don't think any of England, Argentina or Scotland are particularly great teams whereas France have genuine class available to them. They are looking very dangerous; they way they roared back in Dublin was very impressive. We forget how well Ireland were playing in that game until they completely took the game by the scruff and started dictating things. A hugely impressive performance.
But France being France, it would be hard to be surprised if I'm wrong and England bore their way to glory yet again. I hope not; I hope this is the World Cup of expansive rugby. Even though that will be the end of Ireland like; we're well off the pace in attack. It's actually kind of frightening.

France could beat the AB's to be fair, it would be just like them to do so.
AB's don't have the aura of invincibility around them at the moment that they sometimes have.

Yup. After the false dawn of the SLAM, we have been on a downward-spiral from the Eddie days. How did we not see this coming? Even more frightening. For the good of our countrys' future, I'm not sure I want to see us scrape through and prolong the agony. Maybe its time to reset and replace Kidney. He means well, but is not up to taking this team to where it needs to go. Too much negative rugby History. Hes twixt and between at the highest level. I think its an inner-battle he and us - cant win.

Is it Deccie though Gibbo, or is it something within the players that is stopping them from really expressing themselves?
Just seen the Wallace injury. Such a shame, you could see straight away it wasn't good for him. Nothing wrong with the tackle from Manu, was a huge hit but perfectly legal, just one of those horrible unfortunate incidents.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Our problem isn't negative rugby at all, it's a failure to understand how to implement an attacking style of rugby. It's what we're trying and failing to do. The desire and intent to attack is there but we have no real idea of how to do it. As it stands we'd be better kicking more ball and pressurising sides as our defence is very good and we have a number of accomplished tactical kickers.
We'll talk about Kidney after the RWC. I think we'll improve as the tournament goes on and make a quarter-final which we probably won't win.
Gaffney is definitely leaving. We need to add someone with top-class experience in backs coaching to the management. Preferably from the SH. That's half our problem; poorly coached backline.
You saw what Gaffney did to the Leinster backs, and the difference when he left. Not sure how he got this gig to be honest.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Is it Deccie? Of course it is. He's our coach. Bad choice sticking with the obsolete Gaffney, but he did. When Leinster got rid and progressed at the rate of knots. Its so obvious to me, it hurts. He's out of his depth and rambling. I can't even stand to listen to his soft BS excuses anymore. I turn him off.
Anyway, nite regs. Enjoy the rest of the game Pete. You will see just how comfortable it was for ye. NO invention from us. We were clueless.
