The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Lionel Nallet photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

2 questions:
- why are people saying Manu T is a bollix? and
- is there any question that Healy's eye injury was caused by dark deeds from an English player?
Genuine questions from an interested fan who didn't see the game, though I've skimmed the highlights.

I think they're calling him a bollix as he injured Wally even if it wasn't intentional, also I don't know about the Healy injury.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Thanks Thomond.
It's bit harsh to call someone a bollix because he is involved in a tackle which accidentally leads someone to fall awkwardly and be injured. The tackle looked ok to me if a bit messy and, in the absence of any official complaint from the Irish RFU, seems to have been one accepted by all parties as just of those things. Hardly the stuff of which a bollix is made? But I feel strongly the RWC as a whole - not just Ireland - will be the poorer for the absence of Wallace, an outstanding player.
As for the Healy injury, if by any chance it is shown that foul play by an individual English player was at the heart of the issue, I as an English fan would wish to see that player banned for a lot longer than just the upcoming RWC.
Probably won't come to that but I just thought I'd slip that in, as well as the genuine tribute to D Wallace, to show that not all us English are the cheating, moaning one eyed Devil Incarnate some on these Boards make us out to be.

Simon - don't take it too seriously. Someone has to be to blame in these things...it's an outlet for frustration and disappointment, and Tuilagi is the obvious target. I don't think there's anything else in it though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Thanks Cari, but I still think it's a bit harsh to tag a player with such a label if he has the misfortune to be the accidental instrument of another's serious injury.
This is rugby. It's a tough game and, however fit and well tuned the players, sh1t sometimes will happen. It's desperately bad luck on Wallace, Ireland and true rugby lovers, in that order. But it's a slippery slope we find ourselves on if we start to slag off a player because we feel someone has to be held to blame every time a player is seriously injured.

Bollix isn't as strong a word as you are deeming it to be,it was more out frustration than blame.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Simon, like I said, it's not to be taken seriously at all. If you read through the threads that were ongoing during the game yesterday, no one was having a go at Tuilagi when the incident happened. Most of the fans here know that sort of thing is part and parcel of rugby.
Anyway, I think perhaps this conversation is appropriate on another thread.

Ok, I'll drop it.
On another note, therefore, well done Australia for spicing up the RWC yesterday, to England for finally laying their longstanding Dublin bogey, and good luck to all 4 sides who'll represent these islands at the forthcoming RWC.
Cheers all. I'm off.

Manu is a Bollix for the same reason Ashton and Banahan are Bollix - they behave like overgrown schoolboys...oh no! My protest! Argh!

Dim probs Glas.
I don't recall anyone in here calling Manu ah bollix because of a tackle but guess people will read things as they want to.
Just finished listening to Man U v Arsenal on the radio. Needless to say I'm very happy and my poor Dad really isn't!
Have had a lovely day today, plus my grandparents came over and brought loads of food and treats with them so all wonderful. Hope everyone else has been having a great weekend too

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Bollix is a strong word in Britain... they are very funny about swearing in England especially. In Ireland, we are very much more liberal with our language. Bollix ranges from an expression of frustration to a term of affection.
I would affectionately refer to my Dad as a wee bollix on occassion for instance. Thats not the way Willy meant it but it should just be construed as "I dislike that particular player and I'm disappointed that injury has resulted from the actions of said player"

Your weekend sounds lovely Dreamer Mine improved when the Dubs won the semi - wasn't a great game though to be fair, but a win's a win.
Notch - erm, that's what I was trying to explain...bollix seems to be a term of endearment over there.

Yes , I am constantly greeted by close friends in Dublin by "How you doin ya Dutch bollix ya?" Lovely. We use cursing in a completely different way, than the more linguistically prudish UK. They are only words. Why are people afraid of words? To be afraid of them or making them taboo... arms them. To use them frequently disarms them. Like Brit. That was a bad word in NI & Ireland, until the British started using it themselves in media. Some of my black friends call each other the N word all the time. I do too. But they know me. Its all about context, inclination and familiarity. There is no such thing as BAD language in the right context. Innit?

No, context is of course important in everything. It's very much the same with mates. Sometimes we have post-sectarian banter between those of us from different sides of the community. This is commonplace. Obviously this requires we know each other quite well.

Also, Leinster have stated that their two Saffers did make some comments which were 'misinterpreted' by Mujati.
So, really hard to know whether they are being honest about their intentions or not. We'll probably never know. I guess that's the end of it. No real way of knowing whether it was a genuine misunderstanding or not.

A rabid Rangers (and Orangeman) friend of mine over here, have freaked the Clogs out with that a few times. We start a pretend row over the pool table and imaginary death threats are made. You'd want to see their faces. Oh how we laughed.

I'd say they had a personal word and cleared it up. Only way for men to really sort things out. However, it should be a good warning to any others, who may just lose their cool and say something untoward even in a jokey way. But it goes on all the time and most ignore it. Due to the SA players selection background, Notch alluded to earlier, I can see where this could have been escalated. Respect costs nowt. Im glad Leinster and Saints have sorted it out quickly and didn't let it fester. There was great respect between both sets of fans in Cardiff, before and after the game. Long may that reign.

I find it highly patronising the way you lot refer to the UK as if it was some homogenous mass. The use of swear words as endearment is common in every part of the "UK". For example Cofis (Caernarfon people) call each other Cont and think nothing of it.

Ah Glas, I was expecting that. Trust you to pick up on it. Its true. The Welsh(broken down by area/region), Geordies, Cockneys, Norn-Irish, West Country, Brummies, Glaswegians, Skousers et al, all have an individually great self-effacing sense of humour. I love it. Love the regional differences that make up the YUK and Ireland. The very spice of Life.
To think, that Maggie Thatcher wanted to enforce pronounced- English as the standard in Britain in the education system not so long ago. That woman was mad.

Cwrw cont, curry cont, feit cont.
Cwrw is beer, you can work the other two out.

Have seen no rugby yet this weekend, probably watch the England game in a bit. Love it when people from other countries dislike England players, as it generally happens when one of them has inflicted defeat on their team.
Had a lovely day out at Bristol Zoo today anyway.

Pete, I have the sis and bro-in-law staying. Good people. Nice to spend time with them. He's a real soccer-head (Liverpool to the core) and had an eye on the rugby with me yesterday. Man, he came out with some innocent comments which had me searching. Good to hear his perspective. Like. "So, why is dis bollix Kidney playing with no set pattern and the lads playing with no passion. What's goin on man?"
