Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the David Wallace photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
We started the summer as 4th in the worlds rankings, now we're 8th. But we shouldn't be too negative. I just think back to how awful England were in the group stages in 2007. They looked really, really poor. Then they got it together, in a way I think had a lot more to do with the intervention of senior players than their coaches.
We all know that whatever else they've achieved, a poor World Cup for Ireland would mean the legacy of O'Driscoll and O'Connell would be entirely coloured by 2007 and 2011. There shouldn't be a 2015. I've got to believe that our senior players have learned from 2007 and will do everything they can to turn this ship around. Hope its enough.
Getting three wins against the USA, Russia and Italy will earn us the right to start again in the knockouts with a clean sheet. Hope they can manage it.

I've never been as angry after an Ireland game. I include our RWC 2007 and our last minute defeat v France on that.
I was so pished off after the match that I went and bought cake.
I had about 5 pints on me and was fuming, but had literally no idea what to do with myself. so I got 2 slices of fudge cake. It didn’t help…
Did you have ice cream with the fudge cake? No wonder you were depressed, having no ice cream...

Kado, heat it in the microwave for about 15 seconds, Now you're in flavourtown. Also,AI tickets are always available, even on the day. I suppose you don't know that since it has been so long since you were in one I think I would prefer Dublin to win though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Afternoon all. Sorry about the earlier post GAA fans. I was just pulling your bell .
Lads, England had a massive point to prove on Saturday after having the GS dashed so horribly in Dublin. We didn't turn up that day - we had to on Saturday. It was almost a reversal in terms of the attitude shown. Trust me, we felt exactly the same about England's performance pst March.
Neither team have convinced me that they can consistently play with the intensity required against any of the top 8-10 teams in the world over several consecutive weeks to do well in the RWC. England's squad is pretty young though, and our better players are all under 25. There will be no heroics and a final appearance from us this year.
But in 2015 we should be bang on it and NO excuses.

England picked an smart team. Targetted Irelands scrum, shored up their 10-12 chanel and picked a physical backrow.
I fully expected England to win by 8-10 points. As it turned out the margin was close enough. However the manner of the defeat was apalling.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I'm not sure what was going on Saturday but the atmosphere seemed to be very subdued all through the match but it's hard to judge on TV though.
Twenty min before the end the camera showed lots of people leaving the stadium I have never seen Irish fans do that even in worse weather but it does make you wonder if the right people get the tickets these days.

Cymroglan, atmosphere was awful. I mean it worst I've ever felt at an Irish match including the game against Georiga I sat through.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Mick not to worry, i ended up staying in Balbriggan anyway and went to the pub, which in retrospect was the right idea, we ended up winning 170 bucks on the horses so had a free day out. EXCELLENT
Met this bird on Saturday night, a mexican living in Dublin, lovely girl ended up a bit smitten like. What can you do though back to London tomorrow

You can't choose who gets tickets. I would say that the majority of people who attend internationals now would expect the team to be the top NH team and contesting Grand Slams and World Cups. The press has built the team up a lot and these are new fans to rugby who don't have much of a frame of reference bar us winning Heineken Cups on a consistent basis.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Certainly it's not really a case of 'getting behind the team' like it is when you go to watch a provincial game in Ireland. More like sit back and wait for the team to get on top before you open your mouth.
I think we have the worst fans of any national side in some respect. I think we have the best fans in Europe when it comes to the provinces but not for the national side.

C'mon, Notch!!
Ireland won a 6Ns a few years back, have never had a sniff at the RWC finals; people who go to your games buy the tickets on the back of "club' rugby,it's that part of the game which sells tickets. And if the side that they've been hyped up to go and watch don't win at home, then people will leave and be disgruntled.

I'm not sure how you're disagreeing with me. That's pretty much exactly what I'm trying to say. People are buying tickets on the back of provincial success and a combination of that and media hype has led to unrealistically high expectations and equally high levels of disgruntlement when those expectations aren't met.
To be fair, the level of under-performance on show at the weekend is quite alarming regardless of expectations.

I agree with Notch to some degree. When Munster or Ulster or Leinster start losing their fans sing Fields of Athenry, Stand Up and Fight, Come on You Boys in Blue, Stand up for the Ulstermen, Molly Malone etc.
We don't see that with Ireland at all though. The French national fans seem a bit that way too compared to the club teams.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
When the national team are doing badly we automatically (as a nation, nobody specifically) think “ah balls, a <insert province here> player wouldn’t have missed that tackle/kick”.
But when the team is your own then the onus is always on you to come up with the goods as a fan.
Sad but true.
It doesn’t apply to the soccer players because we don’t have a culture of tribalism in soccer, we borrow Englands

Not disagreeing,Notch, just saying that the hopes built at club level very rarely come to fruition at a national level for the Irish.
Therefore, placing hopes in a national triumph is illusory, as the national structure fails to translate what is being said in a home environment to an inter-national language. I'm not an expert in rugby, but Kidney does not appear to be polyglot.

The Mero
Pete St. John/Saint Music
There's somebody under the bed
Whoever can it be
I feel so very nervous
I call for Joni
Joni lights the candle
But there’s nobody there
Hei hi, skidery I
And out goes she
Skipping ropes keep turning
And children at their play
In and out to Claredon street
In and out to pray
I haven’t prayed for twenty years
Or sung a happy song
Since praying went with innocence
And the devil he played along
And we all went up to The Mero
Hey there whose yer man
It's only Johnny Forty Coats
Sure he's a desperate man
Bang-Bang shoots the buses, with his golden key
Hei hi, skidery I
And out goes she
Me father was a stater
And me mother she loved a Tan
She loved her Hafner sausages
And her solider fancy man
Norah is up un Jacob's
And Mary's on the town
I joined the Transport Union
When they said me nose was brown
We all went up to The Mero
Hey there whose yer man
It's Alfie Byrne out walking
Sure he’s a decent man
Bang-Bang shoots the buses, with his golden key
Hei hi, skidery I
And out goes she
I’ve a tanner for The Mero
And me confo money's well hid
If Mary's in the family way
She can blame the Cisco Kid
I''ll be langers in the morning
Me longers need a patch
A jaysus there's con martin
I hope ya win the match
Me uncle had a wear-hound
That never had to pee
But Hairy Lemon snatched it
Down on Eden Quay
Now I got me primo
Me scapulars are blue
For helping the black babies
And Dolly Fosset too
We all went up to The Mero
Hey there whose yer man
It's Brendan Behan out walking
Sure he's a ginger man
Bang-Bang shoots the buses with his golden key
Hei hi, skidery I
And out goes she
It’s true that Dublin's changing
Since the pillar was blown down
By the winds of violence
That's buggering up the town
We used to sort a difference
With a digging match and a jar
Now you're all playing Bang-Bang
That's going too bleeding far
We all went up to The Mero
Hey there whose yer man
It's only me guardian angel
Get a large one for your man
There's no use bleeding rushing
For now's the holy hour
A plenary indulgence
And another baby Power

I'm stuck in football manager limbo. I am between laptops (got a new one but still transferring some stuff from the old one), but FM10 (never got 11) packed in on my old one. I'm waiting until FM12 comes out and I'm going to put that on my new laptop, but it's not out to the winter. I have Cricket Captain, but it's just not the same!

Hi folks. Managed to catch both Irelands warm up games while I was away. The French defeat was really disappointing but the England game was a disaster for sure and we never looked like winning that one.
Gutted for David Wallace. He's a massive loss and it's a real shame for him but I hope he plays on because he's been fantastic this season.
On the plus side it's great to see Ferris back. He looks like he's still getting up to speed but he was pretty immense against England and looks in superb shape physically.
