Rodders, dropping Ryder on his head would be the best thing to happen this world cup. RTE pundits believed it was a red except Frankie who was sceptical. Get behind the boys in red, Welsh fans. Cymru am bith and all that.

Broken his neck? By landing on his shoulders?
I suppose the fact that it was obviously a near fatal tackle is reflected both in the red card for Warburton and Clerc being rushed off for immediate emergency surgery?
Never a red card in all my days.
Learn the rules. If you lift the player you a can't up end him, drive him or drop him. You have to bring him down safely. It was 100% a red card.

He obviously tried to lift him. He obviously drops him.
Obviously a red card.
Can't see what the complaint is.

Again letting go of the player is as bad as driving as you are not in control of the tackle. I do feel sorry for him. He isnt a malicious player and his play has deserved more.
Similiar tackles in the tournament so far have been yellowed but afterwards the players have been banned for between three to five weeks. This means that the tackles should have been reds so its the right decision.
I still can see france losing this and wales running out comfortable winners.

Got to pull it together now, nothing will make the situation better now. Still looking better than France in open play, just got to realise it's not beyond us and get out of our shells.

Frankie has probably been dropped on his head a few times.
France are playing terribly, wales need a change at ten and they will win this.

He didn't pile drive him, he dropped him. There was no malice I could see. And Clerc wasn't really hurt. A yellow, yes. But why a red? Just spoils the game over nothing.
Only thing saving Wales at present seems to be France falling to bits, thinking perhaps they've won the game already.

Ask BOD about that
Had Clerc have been dropped on his head, you'd have a point of sorts, he wasn't. Case dismissed the two "tackles" were nothing like.

The law states that dropping is considered dangerous play, the fact that clerc is okay is, and should be, irrelevant. The IRB directive states;
"The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player’s safety. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle."
Rolland followed this and made the right decision.

The amended Law 10.4(j) will now read: Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.
The amended Law will operate globally from December 1, 2010.

I posted this in the pub, but to clarify;
https://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=67132625664&topic=9546
This is the memo on spear tackles from 2009.
So have to say; fair play Alain Rolland. Maybe one of the refs can come in and clarify if there has been any change on that in the last two years?

This is the memo on spear tackles from 2009.
To summarise, the possible scenarios when a tackler horizontally lifts a player off the
ground:
The player is lifted and then forced or “speared” into the ground. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle.
The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player’s safety. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle.
For all other types of dangerous lifting tackles, it may be considered a penalty or yellow card is sufficient.

with no regard to the player’s safety
I thought he showed regard for safety by realising the tackle had gone wrong and letting go of him. But it's interpretation at that point.
Real shame anyway.

Cowshot thats why he got sent off. He's not allowed to release him in the air. He has to bring Clerc down in a way where his upper body or head doesn't hit the ground 1st.

Dropping a player isn't showing regard for his safety. Its extremely dangerous. I'm sure there are other people on here who have been injured after getting dropped on the upper part of their body in a tackle.

Never a red card in all my days.
Learn the rules. If you lift the player you a can't up end him, drive him or drop him. You have to bring him down safely. It was 100% a red card.
If a tackled player's legs travel above his hips it's a potential "tip tackle" and the tackler has the responsibility to put the player down to ground safely, if the tackler fails to put the player down safely it's an offence that merits anything from a penalty to a red card, prior to the WC POB stressed that tip tackles would be treated seriously by the referees. Therefore you could only expect a penalty for the mildest form of infringement, at the other end of the scale you should expect a red card, along with a lengthy ban, for stuffing a player head first into the turf.
One would imagine based on that scale that picking a player up and tipping him past horizontal and then dropping him onto his shoulders and back, would merit a yellow and nothing more.
That was not one of the worst tip tackles at this WC and therefore IN MY OPINION, never a red card based on the level of consistency shown by referees so far, and never a red card in any other eventuality.
I'm comfortable with my understanding of the Laws thank you, and if you seriously believe that could have broken Clerc's neck, I think we should all thank our lucky stars that we weren't crippled in our teens.
Rolland bricked it.
