The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing picture of newly crowned IRB World Player of the year Thierry Dusautoir.
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Ah yeah Lucky I will. I'm going to try to go around the building and visit the other staff this week as well before I go. Some have been here for longer than I was.

Morning all, Please.
Cari, enjoy your last week and be sure not to overdo it in the work context
Hughie, what a bummer mate. I know you were fond of them. Will be like family moving away. As Cari says though the new house mates might turn out brill as well.

Morning all, I read the story in South Africa yesterday, horrible news.
I see Worsley's had to pack it in too.
Getting the feeling of winter coming now in Cardiff...why didn't I wait till spring to shave my hair

Ulster & Irish regs, a wee bit of fun this morning. A selection of quotes from another article :
Who was the moronic lock (No. 5) for Bath - what a Grade A. Holly Wilaboobie.
That guy (Bath No. 5) has the look of Courtney Laws all over him - i.e. crap.
Bath No. 5 was Ryan Caldwell.

Morning all
What a weekend of rugby. Still have the Ulster vs. ASM and Toulouse vs. Gloucester matches to watch, it's tough trying to keep up with it all with the little ones wanting to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Special Agent Oso as well.
Only 4 days 10 hours and 14 minutes until kick off in the next Heino fixture, cannot wait, it's an all or nothing game for the Exiles at the CCS. Squeaky bum time already. Bring it on.
Hope all are well.

Morning all,
I was only able to catch the Leinster match this weekend, I had to duck out of her folks house for 2 hours to watch it and the temptation to stay out for the following 2 games was very high. But I thought it wouldn’t be worth my while, should have taken the risk now!
Have to laugh, in 20 years there will be 90,000 Munster fans who claim to be at the match where Munster went through 110 phases before ROG kicking an 80m drop goal!

I really enjoyed listening to that bit of commentary...at one point I thought he was having some sort of breakdown, he was getting so emotional. But that's what you want from a radio commentator.

Here's a question - should commentators and pundits aim to be objective or subjective.

If a commentator's going to be biased I'd rather he was unashamedly biased rather than pretending to be impartial.

Jim Neilly who commentates for BBC TV and Radio on the Ulster games goes out of his way to be impartial, bordering on being biased towards the opposition at times.

Staggy - commentators should be objective but I think it's difficult for them to remain entirely so.

Some are better than others, Cari. I'd say Eddie Butler and Andrew Cotter are the best currently at staying impartial. Sky's lot, forget about it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Anyone see that the NZRU have made a proposal to the IRB requesting a change to Law 7 which says "Any player may throw or kick the ball". They are suggesting that having a dedicated kicker - the #10 - would be a better approach and alow for a better stadard of play.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Not sure I agree with that at all Stag, or how it would allow a better standard of play?
Was just reading that about Joe Worsley, always sad when a player has to retire through injury.

They think that it will reduce aerial ping pong but allows for clearance kicks etc to be made by a dedicated player.

Morning people
Kinda strange being at home on a Monday morning... but not unpleasant Off to Citizens Advice this afternoon for chat.
Can I ask the regs that have met me a question? I was asked over the weekend if I'd ever thought about doing voiceovers. Seemed like a bonkers suggestion to me but then everyone's voice sounds different to themselves than it does to others. What do people think? Honestly please, though I know you'd never be anything other than honest, which is why I'm asking you.

I agree Dreamer although Worsley has had a fairly full career. It is more sad (or sadder?) when it is a young fella just starting out.
I was told at the weekend that plans are in place to get Stephen Ferris a job. I think his career is now limited.

Swanny, I think do it. Its something I'd never had thought of in 100 years but it would be a good experience.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
The IRB should tell the NZRU to ping off. Does it really complicate things if a full back or a centre kicks goals?

There hasn't been much aerial ping pong recently though has there? Seems a daft change to me that they're asking for, the 10 does most of the kicking anyway, but it's always useful to have other's that can kick too because you won't always be able to get the ball to a "dedicated kicker". Really don't agree with it.
Rava - yeah I know what you mean about when a younger player gets injured. Just feel like they're missing out on their chance, and like you said at least Joe Worsely has had a full and successful career already.
And with Ferris... it's a very good idea to get him a plan to fall back on if his knees really don't hold out. I think all rugby players should have a fall back plan just in case.

Swanny - ooo voiceovers. I reckon you'd be good at them, certainly wouldn't hurt to try. I think you have a lovely voice

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Go for it Swanny, but just make sure you don't end up on a Halifax ad, we'd have to fall out over that
I reckon a dedicated kicker would panic a team into always kicking when he got the ball. Could be counter productive. Anyway, as has been said, i don't think we're getting much aerial ping pong these days anyway.

Swanny,
What would it be voiceovers for?
I understand where the NZRU are coming from but there really are many other better ways of improving the game.
Had my sport sociology lecture this morning. It was about pain and injury in sport. Incredibly interesting stuff.
