The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the picture of David Sisi, Jannie de Beer and Glen Webbe above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

It is also a bit skewed to just look at the winners.
What's the spread like if you look at who makes the quarters or semis?
Once it gets to the knockout stages it's hard to see how anyone could claim that the method of qualifying for the tournament was the problem.

Even if you look at the finals for the past 6 years (since the recent Irish surge)
4 each from England, France and Ireland.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Good morning all,
Great reading these HEC posts - particulary Mrs P's... her excitement is contagious. So many home/away permutations for the semis with one round still to go.
Had a very large rock fall from a cliff which landed about 2-3m from my car last night. Hard to explain - but the basement carpark is cut into a cliff-face and there is about a 1m gap, said boulder (3.5 x 1.5 x 1m) was only about 2m above the base of the cliff when it came off.
We had a lot of rain in the last 48 hours... and this rock simply sheared off the face of the cliff (nice sedimentary colours... my dear Watson!) Luckily, it just landed on the outside of a concrete hob/wire mesh fence.... otherwise my car end would have been totalled!
(I'll take a photo of it when it's light... quite a sight to see!)
Also, requests for the new pub wall photos are open for nominations now.
Need some help there... or I might have to dig up an obscure Wallaby!

And the 23 Ulstermen from Friday night.
Actually, I had my picture taken with Luke Marshall who came to visit us in our box.
Did I mention I was in one of the boxes?

Breaker, a quick calculation. Your boulder weighs approximately 12 metric Tonnes. Your car would have been totalled all right. Good job there wasn't anyone around.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
You've changed Mrs P. you used to be in it just for the pleasure of raw rugby..
Now you are swanning it with the Prawn sandwhich brigade.
I don't know how you sleep at night
Morning all. another belter of a weekend in HC rugby.. squeeky bum time yesterday for the Leinster game.
need to watch it again but we certainly weren't firing on all cylanders.. well maybe Glagae weren't letting us.
Our backrow seemed very quiet all things considered.

I know MickyT, I'm a disgrace.
Mind you, lovely and all as it was, the atmosphere is not as good as the other parts of the ground. We were lucky as pretty much everyone with us was a rugby fan and the ground was rocking so much that it didn't matter where abouts you were. It was electric!!!
Linebreaker,
That's not a bolder, that's half a mountain!!!!
Thank goodness no-one was near it, never mind the car!

The maintenance guy was a bit blasé about it. He thought it was about 3 to 5 tonnes? He said if it had hit... "we'd have to buy you a new car." If it had bounced over the hob it would have made a mess.
When I went down this morning I thought - what's that dead bullock doing there? It looked like a large carcass at first - caramel and white colours. There are layers of sandstone mainly in the cliff but just below is some shale. An ancient river bed apparently.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Stag - are you on the wum with that comment about the French and English maybe wanting to change the format of the HC?
I know you Irish are feeling quite smug with your HC performances so far (and over the last six tournaments), but to suggest, as I assert you are doing, that we would want to skew the competition against the Irish teams is a nonsense.
From the French point of view, most of their clubs think the HC is an inconvenience in what is an arduously long T14 season. This perhaps explains why only two French teams have won it; and one of those was when no one really took it seriously. Most clubs don't care whether they qualify or not, so trying to change the qualification criteria wouldn't enter their thoughts imo.
From an English point of view, qualification for it is an integral part of our league, and is taken seriously. It certainly provokes much discussion amongst fans. The other factors that create discussion being relegation and the play offs. Why would we want to change things?
A real reason why English clubs have not fared so well in recent years is the need to field strong teams in league matches. In the Rabo you can gear towards the HC because there is no relegation. Witness O'Gara's comment when Munster got knocked out a couple of seasons ago. Despite Munster being top of the Magners, when he came up with "That's it, it's all over for us." sums it up. It's the HC or nothing.
The French and English clubs can't afford (literally) to adopt the same focus. But to suggest we would want to change the HC is looking at things from your very lofty perch.
Careful you don't fall off

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Hound, English fans like to say the Pro 12 teams get to choose their battles and that accounts for their success in Europe. It's partially true, but it's not even half of the real story.
The truth is the style and intensity of rugby in the Premiership is five years behind the curve and all that competition does is a good job of wearing out your players and giving you a few more injury worries. It's no longer a breeding ground for teams capable of competing in the Six Nations or Heineken Cup.
Look to Harlequins; that's where rugby is going. High intensity, good continuity. They're ahead of the rest in the way they approach the game and it shows in their results. Leicester Tigers? England? Shown up as wanting at the highest level. Evolve or perish.

Rava,
Not a bit of a complaint from me. Even though there were no crisps!
Just repeating what someone who had been there before said!

Hello all. MrsP, was the corporate one of those ones where you have a meal and proper seates in the stand or were you stuck behind a screen? I was in corporate for 2 games. Croker is class, starter at half time of the minor game, meal just before the senior game and dessert at half time of the match! Before I get slagged it was wither corporate or not go at all.

It was the former alright Thomond.
Meal before hand and a visit from Luke Marshall then seats outside for the rugby (beside grumpy drawers himself). Pudding or cheese and crackers at half time.
It was lovely alright!

Hound, chillax mo chara. Im not wumming. I have heard both Mark McCall and Jim Mallinder express their dissatisfaction at the unfair advantages handed to the Pro 12 teams and the workload they face. Yes a certain amount of it is prioritisation but come one now don't trot out the line about how the HEC doesn't matter and its all about the Premiership. I didn't hear that when Wasps was lifting the trophy.
