First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Denis Hickie, Shane Horgan, Ben Morgan and Selorm Kuadey above the bar!

Rav,

I hope ye do go to Sarries or elsewhere. You can take most of them handily enough. I love ya and all, but we dont need ye lot down here(in Landsdowne), in an Inter-pro HC knockout. Id be up to 90. Lets all progress together. Pray we avoid each other. Then, see what gives in the SF's. The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub - Page 14 3610695981

clivemcl wrote:I know Notch, but you get citings for all sorts of things, surely Hines should/can be cited for this? Its totally cynical, and ruins the game. Can you imagine if this was a game that could have put us out and a cheat takes it upon himself to do that? Absolute disgrace. And I would hope hope no Ulster player would ever do that. Hate seeing that kind of thing regardless of which player or team.

I need a cuppa

Clive - Hines won't be cited. All successful teams have a cynical aspect to their play when its needed. I don't believe that things like this should be a citing issue - citings should be only for issues related to dangerous play, if cynical fouls are to be cited then we will regularly see 3-4 guys getting suspended after each game.

I do think that such incidents should be looked at to see if there is an arguement for such incidents to brought under the scope of the TMO. Would worry that every single try would then go upstairs though.

This was a good performance from Ulster and I hope they go away and look at the things within their control that they could have done better. This was a game that they could have won -but they are on the up and things are really looking good for Ulster. As I said in a previous post - I would fancy Ulster to win anywhere bar maybe Leinster. As a Munster fan.....I would prefer anyone else but Ulster if we get a home draw.

Cite Hindes?

It was illegal but it probably was a penalty at most. In that part of the pitch it wasn't even a yellow.

No way should he be cited for that.

Thing is, had Pearson spotted the penalty it may well have been a yellow (unlikely I know), but it would have been two penalties for cynical play in the space of 5 minutes.

Controversial but true willy. Devastated. Totally blew it man, too many errors. Poor restarts, missed tackles, missed place kicks, crooked throws in the lineouts, knock on by muller.

That simply wasn't good enough, Clermont were there for the taking. The margins are so small at this level and when opportunity knocks you have to walk through the door.

No knock on by muller. replay showed that he gathered it an inch from the ground and directed it between his legs. One of the many things the ref didnt see today along with Hines taking out a defender on the line (gifting a try) and holding back two forwards from getting to a ruck, along with Fofana's late challenge on iHumph preventing him from collecting his chip.

There were errors, but those errors wouldn't have cost us the game if Hines and Clermont had played within the rules.

Ach, Clive. Riding the swings and roundabouts of fate is part of this tournament. We got a lucky break with Quins and Toulouse slipping up and an unlucky break for the try decision. That's rugby.

I know it's tough though, I'm as gutted as you are mate Hug

Clive,

NO great team plays within the rules - at key times. IF they can get away with it. Something Ulster will find out to their cost - if they dont use it.

Like I say, If that was a result that might have seen us knocked out, I doubt you'd be so magnanimous. It shouldnt happen, not by anyone, or to anyone. If the powers at be look at that and think it's a nothing matter, it doesnt say much for what we can expect if the time comes when an incident like that leads to your 'beloved' team gettin knocked out in the quraters, semis, heck even the world cup final...

actually no, your right, lets try and get away with as much as we can. Is that the message? If we can beat you by doing something illegal we will? should we practice illegal play on the training grounds then? I havn't had that cuppa yet...

It most certainly is the message. Playing in the forwards is practically the art of bending the rules. And all teams do it, every week. Including us. A bit of cunning goes a long way and has been part of rugby since year dot.

I think it really is time for that cuppa clive Wink

Clive I agree with what you are saying but you don't get the descisions away from home...you have to take your chances and we didn't...unfortunately you don't win trophies with moral victories.

Hugely disappointed because the senior players...Best, Muller, Pienaar, Ferris let us down at key times. A great effort but that isn't enough.

I didn't say that clive. But refs miss stuff every game. They are human.

Our players made more mistakes than Pearson today.

Don't get me wrong, I am very dissappointed but so proud too. We can't do anything about what the ref misses we can only change what we do to make sure it's not our mistakes that stop us winning next time.

So many times in the past a daft decision from the ref has totally thrown Ulster. that doesn't happen any more (well except for Muller tonight) and we are a better team for it.

Ha! He knows it well. Yep. Somehow, it all evens out over numerous campaigns. I have beeen raging and sulking at so many key moments over the last 15 years, that cost Leinster games. But, we got it all back. The cliche is so true, you DO make your own luck. Mostly based on hard-earned and bitter experience.

meh... I'll let it go, but I don't like dodgy play even if its Ulster doing it. Surely if citing did happen for some things (like incident leading to tries) it would discourage it and make the game more about skill. But whatever.

Call me honourable, or a liar, but if Ulster were to win the Heineken Cup, I wouldnt be happy if it was through a cheats try like that one...
