The Scottish Rugby Union have been left embarassed after T-shirts boasting of a Calcutta Cup win appeared on sale five days before this Saturday's match.
The mistake by the SRU's online retail partner led to T-shirts from Scotland's win in 2008 being re-released.
The shirts bore the logo: "Calcutta Cup. Scotland. Winners."
The blunder comes days after Scotland head coach Andy Robinson stood by comments he made after the World Cup accusing England of 'arrogance'.

Re: Scotland v England Match Thread, Teams etc....
With regard to this front row thing its not just about the scrum though is it. I dont see Englands front 5 as one thats massively physical around the park full stop, which means physicaly moving people out of the ruck, bullying half backs who think its a good idea to make a quick break, driving mauls, and putting in the odd bit of thugnishness when reuqired to remind the oppsoition they are in a match ( Ok theres a bit of that from Hartley but often it comes as uncontrolled agression rather than calculated behaviour) . Thats before we even get onto buldozing through set defences on the odd occassion they manage to get the ball.
Id say Scotland would be expect to have the edge in the tight, the technical scrumaging abilities of Englands front 3 is only one small part of that. Id also like to see Hartley throw coinsitently.

I'm quite perturbed by this - are you ceding the vast majority of Northumberland to those pesky Scots?
(or is this just for those geographically challenged posters from the South)
To be honest they are welcome to everything down to ( and including ) Hull
I can only assume your wife must have run off with a Geordie....
I dont hate you that much, i wouldnt inflict her on anything other than a welshman
To be fair Id keep Durham and York. I went to Newcastle, the locals tried to set us on fire (true story), wouldnt bother again. Cumbria, you can see why they didnt bother with a proper wall that side.
What were you doing to get set on fire...what accent have you got? Anything from the Tyne down is classed as a johnny foreigner up here!!
As for Cumbria....well you have a point...they can have Maryport and Workington...but we'll keep the rest.

that's classed as banter up here mate - just be thankful they didn't lose their sense of good humour.
Durham city and York can get full of pretentious students, is that what you like about those places, loads of yah's in 'rugby' shirts, cashmere sweaters around the shoulders, trousers at mid calf length and flip flops?

A human one, I think they objected to us coming on to the reservation.
I also beleive Ant and Dec to be a myth, I saw no evidence of them.
Oh and Englands keeping Berwick, just for the sheer bloody mindedness of it.

PSW,
Ford , Murray and Jacobsen are pretty good in the loose too. In particular Ross Ford who's captaincy is in no small part to his phenomenal work rate. Hamilton and Gray are brilliant in the loose too.
Add that to Stroks, Rennie and Dozer Denton in the backrow and I think Scotland are better across the board in the pack.
In the Backs though, all change. Englands back 3 are normally deadly. Foden and Ashton are superb players and if Parks does some sloppy kicking if firmly believe we'll be repaid with interest by potent counter attacking from Ashton and Foden.
Had Laidlaw been playing and either James King or Matt Scott from Edinburgh I would be inclined to say Scotland would have the advantage in the backs too, basing that on Edinburghs attacking perdormances as of late. Edinburgh were frequently touted as weak defensively, they didnt look that weak against RM in Paris or LI at Murrayfield.
For me Scotland will convincingly win the forward battle. I hope thats enough to win the match.

It's a strange world we live in.
Scotland sell Calcutta Cup winners t-shirts and the rugby world laughs it off, I wonder what would happen if the RFU ever made such a man sausage up?

Well we'll see I guess. Theres been a theory banging aroudn for the last few years that England have been picking stodgy old monster forwards abnnd relying on a strong pack whilst shackling a ganeration of explosive young backs. Now we have those kids and a fragile but pacy pack. Lets see which works.
I think thats a pretty fair assement of the sides strengths. I would expect England to be strong in the lineout mind, if they are organissed. Hopefuly they will just keep it simple and cut out the ridiculous moves followed by an overthrow we saw at the world cup. Same with the scrum, a part time 8 and who has never played with his 9 before is not ideal if you start doing fancy pants things off the back of the scrum.

Hersh - this is your last warning.
Do NOT bait the Scots.
Scot baiting is only allowed if you live in the three northern English Counties and the North Riding of Yorkshire.
I would not dream of winding up the Welsh.

The selection of Parks shows the ambition of AR and his need to win. Scotland had a knack of making the RWC quarters and this was broken last year. That put pressure on AR and Parks seems like a decision to go for safety first and stick with what he knows. Sean Lamont at inside centre is his gamble and to me an admission that with Parks he needs someone with a bit of dash outside him to compensate for his lack of Park´s taking on the line at speed. However, if the ball comes to him the English defence will see that move coming a mile away. What Parks really needs to do is move across the line and sell an outrageous dummy and straighten up the attack and link up with the backrow inside him. Now that move will not be what England is expecting.

I'll take your word for it.
RE the lack of Calcutta Cup T-Shirts - mebbes it's because, although we have beaten them a few times recently, we feel it's not been as convincing as it should be - this might tie in with our unreasonable expectations of the English side.
we feel we SHOULD crush them (they have two professional teams and we have two leagues of professional teams) but they always put up such a fight, especially in recent years, that we come away feeling if we have just played our 'get out of jail free' card and thus not feeling as bouncy as we should.
Dunno about you, but the last few games I've just felt relieve that we've won..

My bold. I agree, although his ability to do this is questionable. England by 20 if they click (I'll be having a flutter) or by a very close score if they grind it out. Simply, they're just better than the Scots.

Forecast for Sat in Edinburgh.
"then cloudy and windy with outbreaks of rain on Saturday, preceded by sleet or snow for a time"
if you are but the English backs will like it a bit calmer and warmer than that

Head2heads:
The pack:
Jacobsen v Cole - Chunk in fine form, plenty grunt behind, Cole a solid performer - Evens
Ford v Hartley - Ford in rare form, Hartley playing ok - Adv Sco
Murray v Corbisiero - Murray hasn't been dominating for Falcons but he always saves his best for the navy blue shirt, Corbs had a tough time against not-renowned scrummager Cross recently - Adv Sco
Gray v Botha - the most exciting lock in the game today versus an average lock - Adv Sco
Hamilton v Palmer - less-than-he-was-but-still-big Jim in fine form for Glaws recently, Palmer wishing he'd stuck with Scotland after age-group appearances - Adv Sco
Strokosch v Croft - Croft is a talent altho might unbalance this backrow, Stroker will run through walls and he played a blinder vs Toulouse - Evens
Denton v Dowson - battle of the new boys: 31 but his first cap Dowson is a decent player versus 'dozer Denton who is a ball-carrying beast - Adv Sco
Rennie v Robshaw - the new England Captain is a v talented player (still a mystery how Johnson ignored him) but is not a true openside versus the undoubted natural, fetching talent of Rosco - Evens
The backs:
Cusiter v Youngs - two fine scrummies, mixed form for both - Evens
Parks v Hodgson - Battle of the flaky 10s, but England's 3rd choice is better than Robinson's first - Adv Eng
Evans v Strettle - Max hasn't scored this season and not in great form, Strettle in fine form - Adv Eng
S Lamont v Barritt - A natural IC vs an enforced one 'cos the guy inside him is SO poor - Adv Eng
De Luca v Farrell - Most English fans won't believe me that NdL has had a new lease of life this season and has learned to tackle, but its true, Farrell an undoubted talent, young tho he is - Evens
Jones v Ashton - Jones is in great form but is a rookie and no-more-splashdowns isn't in top form but is class - Adv Eng
R Lamont v Foden - Foden offers a far greater attacking threat and Ramont will get injured as usual - Adv Eng
So that's 5 for Scotland, 5 Evens, and 5 for England

Asbo,
think you have it. It will come down to the FH duel between DD and HH. Every Scottish supporter I know would rather even have HH than DD so 6-3 to the bufties then.

Scotlands park is going to be better. loose and tight.
One prediction - hartley will pop up under pressure and be penalised, hartley will lose his temper and be penalised. Ford will get right in his face

Sorry fella, have to disagree with a couple there. Croft/Robshaw/Dowson have comfortably and consistently been outperforming the Scots in Prem/Heiny. And how De Luca can be better than anyone is a mystery!!

Sorry fella, have to disagree with a couple there. Croft/Robshaw/Dowson have comfortably and consistently been outperforming the Scots in Prem/Heiny. And how De Luca can be better than anyone is a mystery!!
Croft, Robshaw and Dowson haven't played any scots teams this year in premiership or HEC...!!!
Croft has been in very poor form for over a year, Dowson is average at best and ageing too. Should go with Morgan, better player, will get over the gain line. Robshaw looks good for Quins, but was outplayed by Saull last i saw him live at HQ.
Anyhow just popped on hear to ask if anyone knows when the team is announced today???

"You've got a shock coming."
That’s a bit of a silly comment, only a fool would write Scotland off at Murryfield against England.
I think the points raised are valid, if both teams want to play rugby the 'Welsh way' !!!! then I think England will win, but I fear Scotland and Robinson will look to strangle the life out of England and make it a damp squib of a game, would that be a step forward for the Scots?
I'm confident if England are allowed to play then they could put a decent score on the board.

And yet this seems to be what we're seeing Hersh old socks. Mind you, was ever thus.HERSH wrote:"You've got a shock coming."

It's an annual 6N event - along with posters enthusiastically pronouncing on the relative merits and demerits of players it's clear they have not seen once in the club season.
Let's just stick a peg in the sand here so that when people with no prior knowledge find out that Rennie is a tyro and Denton is a wrecking ball we can say we tried to mention this in advance.
I think that if England can snatch an early try then the game will open right up and we'll get some aerial tennis with some quality counter attacking from Foden and Strettle. If on the other hand it's tight until the last half an hour, then Kellock will come off the bench and Desperate will start touch kicking to give him the line outs to steal.
But we don't know. Very much looking forward to seeing all young players give it their all - both teams.

Re: Scotland v England Match Thread, Teams etc....
Given the weather and the head to heads that are hard to disagree with, you can't help but think it does hinge on can Parks NOT man sausage up the kicking? Provided that, Scotland's pack will have England pinging penalties across the park.
Whilst England's backline IS better than Scotland's, in the past few seasons Scotland have been fantastic at retaining possession and making ground up to the 5m line. You can't help but think then adding that in with the pack that Scotland just need to be good with their scramble defense - I hope they're practising it.

England to win by less than 7 points.
Andy Robinson has put pressure on the Scottish players to win, so that usually translates to them bottling it and the other team winning, though of course being a celt I will be behind Scotland today.
Cmon Scotland!

I actually think Scotland will win by under 7 points. Tough game is Scotland at home and with Englands inexpierenced centers it will be pretty tight.
