First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Tommy Bowe, Ryan Jones, Dan Newton and birthday boy Prop above the bar.

Really? Does it have to be Sky or would Virgin Media work too? My dad has Sky Sports, but through Virgin.

It's only sky. because its based on an App/Programme called. Sky Go.

It's nothing off their backs that you are using it unless they are looking to use it on their IPAD/LAPTOP etc.

You can register 2 devices for Sky go, Eoin has nominated his phone and my laptop.

Mick, if i bought an iMac could i stream all my illegally downloaded movies to my TV through an AppleTV? I imagine i'd have to jail break it first but i'm not sure if it's possible. Thinking of getting an iMac instead of a new lapdog.

Hi all, very excited to see Doug Howlett has signed a new contract at Munster until May 2013.

Really, really, really REALLY hope he starts coaching with Munster then.

He said "I'm obviously delighted to have agreed terms. My family and I are very happy here in Munster, it's home to us and we're very much looking forward to remaining here."

Nobody even said such nice things about Limerick before.

You used to get all sport in the UK for the licence fee. Everything was on BBC or ITV. Sky took that away. I'm not going to give them money for a part of it back. Sport is democracy in action, nobody would put up with news being treated the same way. It is a personal bug bear of mine, I'm not seeking converts thumbsup

Do you feel angry at BBC/ITV for selling them. Sky didn;t just decide one day to steal all the sports and push over any BBC cameraman who came near. Its an agreement between them.

Note, I don't have Sky Sport - while I'm willing to pay to watch rugby, I refuse to pay for loads of soccer that I won't watch. Now if they had a dedicated rugby channel like in NZ (or even a rugby and cricket channel) ...

Couple of responses -

Rava - Yeh I know you gots to be careful with it alright. my own one I only let my brother use. He has the basic Sky package and piggy backs on the sports/movies from my sky go.

Mickado - I would imagine it's all possible. However, I don't have an Imac so I would imagine the boys to chat to about that is Martin or Lar. Martin has an Apple TV. Martin has everything Apple so he would be your best bet on it.

Stag - Good news on Howlett. Really thought that we wouldn't see much more of him in a Munster Jersey.

Kiwi - I know mate, I set my alarm before work to take a gander at it. I hope they will show the odd Friday games.. There is a lot of it on tomorrow I believe.

Sky took a punt. They outbid the terrestrial outfits on the basis that they knew they had limited budgets. Sky borrowed massively and for a while made a loss. However the borrowing was so big compared with their asset base, the banks would have been worse off calling them in. In time they bought up more and more sport and took on more and more subscribers until they could clear their debt and consolidate their monopoly. Our repsonse? The Crown Jewels Rolling Eyes Sporting events Sky can't touch, well thanks a bunch. BBC and ITV were hamstrung by the way they were set up and could not compete. Bare in mind this was during the 80's Thatcher government which was completely in Murdoch's pocket.

Pathetic. What did it save?

There have been many Court closures in recent months (Ammanford being one). However the buildings cost just as much to keep whether you use them or not. Sales are not going as well as projected so the supposed savings from the closures are actually turning into losses! You couldn't make it up! furious

Glas,

Why does the building cost as much when it's not being used?

Or is it still being used for other purposes?

I dont understand that either. If a building is empty you don't pay heat, light, maintenance costs, staff wages. Unless they are still renting it how does it cost same amount?

The building has costs independent of its use. The use has its own costs. They are spending £2.5m a year keeping the buildings empty. Of the 121 buildings put on the market 5 have sold, one of those to an FE College who had money from the Government to fund the purchase!

What on earth are they spending £2,500,000 a year on an empty building for.

What type of costs. I am flabbergasted a building not being used could ever be so expensive.

Security, maintenance. They are trying to sell them so heat and light, cleaning. Most of the usual costs I'd imagine.

Well Stag, just imagine you closed up your house and walked away. What would happen to it? Don't you think you might need to still maintain it? What about insurance/ Its more expensive to insure empty buildings btw. The rates don't stop either any more.

Security I can understand but why are they heating ang lighting an empty building?

Tell them to return the rented Fig trees!

Very Happy

An unheated Victorian building (as many of these are) would crumble and lose value at an alarming rate.

I'd imagine damp would take hold very quickly.
