Euro 2012: Day 12 Thread
First topic message reminder :
Sweden v France (ITV 4, 19:45)
England v Ukraine (ITV 1, 19:45)
Current Group Standings:
France - 4
England - 4
Ukraine - 3
Sweden - 0
If points are level, sorting criteria is thus:
Equality of points after the group matches
8.07 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the
following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:
a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if MORE
than two teams finish equal on points);
c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
MORE than two teams finish equal on points);
d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
e) higher number of goals scored in all the group matches;
f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,
paragraph 1.2.2);
g) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
h) drawing of lots.
And this is what each team needs to do:
France (v Sweden)
Win - Secures qualification. Top spot depends on the result between England and Ukraine. If England also win, top spot goes to the team with the superior goal difference.
Draw - Secures qualification. Will still progress as group winners if England v Ukraine ends in a draw courtesy of their superior goal difference over Roy Hodgson's men.
Lose - Through as second-placed team if England beat Ukraine. If England and Ukraine draw, France will still qualify courtesy of their better head-to-head record against the co-hosts. If both England and France lose the team which has the superior goal difference between the pair will qualify.
England (v Ukraine)
Win - Secures qualification and they will progress as group winners if France fail to beat Sweden.
Draw - Secures qualification and they will progress as group winners if France lose to Sweden. If both final group games end in a draw, France will qualify as group winners courtesy of their superior goal difference over Roy Hodgson's men.
Lose - Out if France win or draw against Sweden. If both England and France lose the team which has the superior goal difference between the pair will qualify.
Ukraine (v England)
Win - Secures qualification. They will qualify as group winners if France fail to beat Sweden.
Draw - Out.
Lose - Out.
Sweden (v France)
Already eliminated.
Final day of the group stages, we have 6 teams through to the Quarters, 2 teams will join tomorrow. Sweden are already out courtesy of losing to the Co-Hosts and England. Ukraine need a win against England to qualify, nothing else will do and on their home patch they will be feeling confident. England only need to avoid defeat and they will make it to the quarters, whether they will make it to top spot or not depends on the French game and how many goals England can score with a certain Wayne Rooney back in the team (of course England could make it through with a defeat but that's a pretty unlikely scenario in which Sweden will need to beat France by a bigger margin than Ukraine beat England). For France, avoiding defeat will guarantee them qualification, a defeat and they will need to rely on England drawing or beating the Ukraine. And similar to England, they could make it through with a defeat.
Winners of Group D will face Italy.
Runners Up of Group D will face Spain.
Come on England!

John wrote:Martyr_94 i suggest you read my last 20 posts on this topic and see what your up against. These people will not listen to or accept any negative comments regarding england. If you do they will gang up on you talking absolute garbage and going off subject. They coudnt even admit to me that ukraine were the better side against england and that apparently ukraine had no chances against england and kept rattling on about the fact england have only conceded long range efforts during the tournament.
The facts are england have qualified, well done! nothing special has been achieved because with a team england have it is to be expected. In my and alot of peoples opinion it was a poor, poor group. The amount of time, space and chances we conceded having played these defensive tactics, it is suprising that we didnt lose at least one game. The opposition has been dire in my opinion and england have struggled because the defensive tactics have handcuffed our most creative players.
But this will all be rejected from positive thinking man mysterioakey who is never wrong about anything
People have accepted negative comments, you just refuse to accept positive ones. You're the stubborn one John. Nobody has gone off subject, they just disagree with you so you throw a strop. That's because Ukraine weren't the better side, for that whole game England were never really in danger of losing the game. People aren't saying that we've only conceded long range efforts, but that chances are not shots from 25-35 yards and that the team have actually conceded very little clear cut chances....which is true.
In the end, England have topped the group, beat the opposition they were expected to beat and drew with the opponent they were expected to lose to. All in all, not bad. They don't play to a style you want, but big deal. It's effective. I have yet to see England carved open, and if we can frustrate Italy in the same way into just mindlessly shooting from long range, then that should be fine. I fancy our chances at catching them out with a goal.

England are average in the sense we're great at the back and poor going forward.
France are a good team, last night was their first defeat in 24 games...

Re: Euro 2012: Day 12 Thread
Nobody's ganging up on you, everybody here bar Duty (who's putting it on for a show anyway) accepts Englands limitations. Yet because we also praise England's strengths we're all blinded apparently. Personally England have exceeded my expectations already, so whatever happens next is a bonus.
Yet again you refuse to actually form a coherent argument, and resort to 'my opinion is right, you're stupid' defense whenever somebody responds to you. You're fully entitled to your opinion, but to insult everybody who doesn't share it, undermines your argument and all-round credibility.

I think the point is, in relation to other teams in the world, if you look at the average we're far above that.

Its all relative I guess. If we take all the nations in the world into account we're very good. Don't think we're that far above average in terms of teams at the Euros though. A testament to the work Roy and his staff have done in a short space of time.

I wouldn't say so. Sweden and Ukraine were scarped past and both had real good chances, in Sweden's case they should have won and looked like running away with it at one point. England are not a great team by any stretch but I think they have a great chance against Italy, although I thought Italy were superb against Spain and have players up front who can trouble England.

As long as we are talking about teams in the euro cup(not the wordl) then i would call us abit above average in fairness- we did top the group!!. I feel like people bash englands opposition quite alot- just to try and undermine the performance.

Sweden rely on Ibi. If he's good then they are good. If he's bad then they are bad. Great goal v France. Andy Carroll wannabe though.

Thing is he wasn't bad vs Ukraine. Sweden's best player by a few lightyears.
The rest of the team were beyond awful though.

“Our hopes were raised when we received news that a group of men had been spotted running around aimlessly,” revealed England right back Glen Johnson.
“We thought that James could be among them, but it just turned out to be the Dutch team playing Portugal.”

I mean in relation to the other teams in the world, we're far above average. Even in terms of the Euros I would argue we're slightly above average. Obviously not as good as Spain or Germany, Italy, France and Portugal are at the next level and we're just below them. Not a bad place to be though.

I am English, was cheering for England, and generally do. I was not saying England won unfairly. I was simply wondering why it was not a goal and a couple of people tried to explain why. That's what one would call a civilized discussion in a civilized world. The level of crudeness in your comment is repulsive.
