The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Belfast - the rope-making and ship building capital of the world.
Now the Mouth of the Shoal awaits the safe arrival of one of it's long lost daughter's - Cariadwr - in her ongoing quest to be as close as possible to one of her favourite players... Tomás Ó Buaigh of Emyvale.... on her Birthday
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Nial O'Connor, Cari & Tommy Bowe, "Pickles" the wonder dog of '66, Wikus van de Merwe and Black Caviar above the bar.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
I don't disagree with most of that, in terms of possibly making life easier for the players.
A big difference now is that we have competitive leagues, play offs, and the European competitions. OK the Rabo doesn't rely very much on league placing to determine qualification for the HC, but the HC is a huge hit with the fans. And yet another source of sponsorship money.
The days of the old Merit Tables are gone.
I used to love the old Anglo/Welsh games on Grandstand though.

Glas a du wrote:There was a game every Saturday and Wednesday in the season, and tours were hosted and conducted. The Lions toured every three years. There is too much emphasis on training and not enough on playing. Clubs had to develop players and drew them up from feeders. The AI's are a pale imitation of the old tours. The pro game could learn a lot from the old ways.
But players were half the size or twice as slow or both. The game is so much more attritional nowadays I don't think you can compare the playing shedules.
The wee fella was talking about this sort of thing tonight. He saw Mary Rand at the UK Athletics trials the other night. She was talking about her training regime. She trained three times a week and had a half pint of Guinness every day.
Things change.

Yes and there's a lot in what you say, but:
1 so called "regions" will break their squad members before turning to their feeder clubs
2 they are paying lesser squad members so why not play some friendlies to give them game time and bring them on as players
3 a few midweek games are much better for developing skills than any amount of training sessions
4 games almost get in the way of training. Every coach seems to want less games. Man up and get on with it.
5 the controll freakery of rigourous game plans is as much to do with it as the impact on players
6 a test series as we have just seen adds immeasurably to the whole thing. OK there are 3 SH powers plus Argentina and the PI nations and the 6N, so every year somebody will lose out. I well remember the Fiji tour of the late 80's and Llanelli beating Australia twice.
I'm not saying we have to ape everything, but change for the sale of being different is just as bad as failing to adapt.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
But nowadays the centres make the flankers of yore look like midgets.
Anyone with a number lower than 8 might have been about the mass of George North but they certainly didn't move with anywhere near that velocity. The fast ones then wouldn't look out of place in a schools game now.
You remember the old,
e=mc squared
Squaring the velocity increase has lead to hugely more energetic collisions.
Then of course there is the money.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
I think players can learn to adapt honestly. I always go back to the sport of olympic weightlifting for examples, but they do a LOT more work than any professional rugby player. If you want to do a bit of research, please do. Most train 7 days a week, twice or three times a day. These guys are lifting weights twice the size of the biggest rugby players around. It is their entire life, and they get no rest. None, and they aren't allowed to rest or hold back if they want to be at the top. They are always tired, always sore, but they always have to perform. There is no "player welfare" for these guys. Just pure training all day every day. Full intensity training.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
But there is a huge difference between lifting weights and having 120kg of highly trained flanker run into you at speed. That is where the attrition comes from. Not the hours spent in the gym, the collisions.
That is why players need recovery time between games.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
I would say throwing 220kg from the floor, to an overhead position, every day as fast as you can, in a movement that takes less than a second to complete, is a lot more intense than averaging about 10 tackles in one game, and getting tackled even less times. With an entire week of recovery.
Olympic weightlifters end up with major joint pain, back pain, they get bruised all the time (missing your lifts is part of the sport) and they still get no rest of time to recover. Their sport is a lot more intense, and a lot more taxing on the body. With no rest.

Ask a Mod or Admin.
Although I'm guessing 'my profile' (yours not mine, you know what I mean!) may be the answer.

Nah, MrsP you're right in what you say, kinetic energy is equal to half the mass times the velocity squared so double the mass and double the energy but double the speed and increase the energy by a factor of 4. It's also a neat segue into Einstiens theory of relitivity.

Good point well made!
Nerd!
Okay! So I got the formula wrong but at least I knew that changes in velocity were squared when considering the changes in energy!

Surely that is just the formula for mass-energy equivalece. Not Einstein's theory of relativity?
And "m" and "c" should be lower case, no?
