The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

He mightn't be the greatest we have produced (Brady) but he is in the top 5.

Forgot about him, yeah he probably takes it. My dad saw him play a few times he played in Cork for a while. Pushes Keane to around 6th or so
All joking and pettiness aside, a great documentary on Cork was done by John Creedon who works for RTE. Covers everyting from Rory Gallagher to soccer to one of Cork's older landmarks. He did Limerick too, so expect Dubland and Belfast to feature

Glad to hear you had a fab time in France but I think you've picked something up by accident. I tried to wipe it off the screen thinking it was dust or something... but no, that's definitely a circumflex thingy.
Well done Ireland with Katie Taylor's marvellous Gold Medal performance. That applause nearly lifted the roof off here.
Those damn Krauts (hockey) and Yanks (dribble ball)... well played to them both though. Go Holland and France in those finals. (If GB& Russia don't win) Our chains didn't fall off proper like in the basketball... threw that one away when they had them on the ropes.
Still a couple of medals possible for our 3 sheets and the wind brigade.

Good win for Bolt but it almost seems an anti climax if he doesn't win a medal now doesn't?
Realism is objective. But I want to be on your team bud. In fact, I am.

Saipan yes is a big black mark on him but besides that in terms of titles and perfromance he was one of the greatest footballers we produced. He was the defensive midfielder before people put them in formations. He won matches for Ireland and United singlehandedly. He raised the performance of those around him. BOD did that and people laud him. Keano doesn't get the same treatemt due to Saipan. I respect the decision he made as the FAI are a joke and always will be, giving themselves better treatement than the players is a farce. Would I have done it? No but I can see why one would.
Excellent riposte Sir. Respect.

Stunning performance by her Rodders. Team GB are only 3 golds short of Ireland's total medal haul of all time (obviously our first Olympics as Ireland was 1924, competed under GB prior to that). That's frightening, what a stunning performance by them, unreal stuff. Congrats.
Their cycling team were superb and judging from the disgruntlement on the Olympics section, they created a siege mentality after events were cut, to try and end GB dominance (that's what the posters say so I'm going to have to take them up on it with me knowing jack shoite about it). Good stuff.

I didn't find it funny because I wanted to watch the fight and the focus to be on a fantastic performance by a world class athlete, not an Irish characture piece with Daire O'Brien and that other Irish fella who's not that funny.

Well said Rodders. Needed more respect than that man.
Still. She did it for us. Bring on the Norn Iron boxers, ta feic. I just love that it's the same as Irish rugby, ya know. We tend to shine when we are as one.

I honestly don't know how dressage is in the Olympics. When art was taken out of the Olympics, so should this event.
I bet Katie will be in the Excel this evening cheering on the lads and hopefully the whole nation will follow them like they did Katie yesterday.

Ah fantastic stuff Billy. I say it has been nice to get some freedom again.
Tanzania was fantastic Billy. It is one of those experiences I am appreciating more and more over time since I left. They really were a beautiful people, especially when they weren't trying to sell you stuff.
One thing I do miss is being so close to the beach and going for a swim. Zanzibar is the most beautiful place I have been to.

Haha, still using non-metric measurements there too
MBTGOG, I saw that peice on the BBC last night about why black sprinters are so dominant. Honestly, I found it a little cringy, The conclusion basically said, well of course they’re going to be stronger and fitter, they were slaves and only the strongest and fittest slaves survived. Now, I’m not an expert in social history or whatever, but I’m fairly sure that in general the N word is hated by black people because it’s used to remind them that they were once slaves. Then at the end of it, the camera cuts to John Inverdale sitting across from Colin Jackson, Michael Johnson and (bah! Can’t remember her name, but she was a British black track athlete) and he’s basically saying “so, that’s it then, that's why you guys have an advantage over us?”.
Maybe it’s because I have hang-ups myself, but I found it really uncomfortable.

Mick,
They ended up having the nature v nurture debate, which is hardly going to be solved on BBC during coverage of the Olympics. On the slave theory, Michael Johnson did a documentary and it is something he believes and supports so...
The little piece they did on Peter Norman was really good and certainly inspired me.
Billy,
People have asked me if I'd go back again and while I loved it, if I were to spend the money, I'd probably pick another African country like maybe Angola or Congo. But I would love to get to Zanzibar again as we only spent 2 nights there.

Bore da pawb / good morning all, Friday is upon us!
Mick, I thought that race-based article they showed before the 200m final was really inappropriate. 'So, is everyone looking forward to the race? Let's watch a film about Nazism and the slave trade while we wait.'

Munsty I watched that programme and thought it was more idiologically (?) motivated than anything else, the scientific evidence that there is any link between the slave trade and success of african american and Jamaican athletes seemed very far from conclusive to me.
Besides didn't MJ contradict himself on the BBC? He seemed to be saying last night that enviroment is a big part and there are other factors other than genetics, whereas in that doc he was arguing that the slave trade created a race of genetic supermen and women.

I'm just saying that it was the black man on the panel that was advocating the slave idea, whereas if it was the white man, that is certainly when you would have felt uncomfortable.
I'll tell you something, everytime I hear about Eugenics, it makes me absolutely sick to the stomach that people thought/think like that.

All of the panelists said that it was nurture over nature.
Still, 81 of 82 record holders in the 100m are black and the first white man to run under 10sec in the 100m did it only 2 years ago! I mean, there’s something to this theory, but I’m not convinced they can just put it down to being slaves. The Irish were slaves too, they were brought in their 10,000’s to the carribean as slaves, but we don’t see white carribean sprinters setting the world alight, we also had millions of people emigrating across the world on funeral ships, surely the ones that survived that would be “only the strongest and fittest” too?

Rodders,
I have to say, I liked that documentary. Not because of any scientific findings in it, but watching Johnson learn about the history of the slave trade and about his own family which they did not know much about was quite compelling viewing.
Black people in America are referred to as African American yet the near majority could not tell you whereabouts in Africa they do actually come from, so seeing him get a vague idea of that is pretty cool.

It would have been good if they had done a documentary on the subject and showed it in parallel with the Olympics coverage instead of a short segment as part of the build-up.
Seemed out of place on the night, and certainly merits a longer discussion. I agree with lucky. The timing of it was horrible...
