The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

He smashed it actually. 8 minutes better than the previous one. Corkman turning up on the day is to be expected, superb effort from Rob, a great guy who is as dedicated to his craft as any sportsman. It is a bit of an odd sport in someways but it deserves to be in the games and the fitness levels of these guys is unreal, so much hard work and you see Rob going out and about a genuinely nice guy. Gutted for him but he has another Olympics or two in him. Well done Rob, hold your head up high and come back for Rio. Superb stuff from him and I think he could have taken a medal on a longer course! Well done him and team Ireland.

Might I be right in thinking his result is the most respectable of all the Irish competitors in athletics? Quite a few of them haven't turned up, have they?

Did you see al the guys at the end of the race just collapsing either to the ground someone's arms or a wheelchair. My mum was appalled watching it.

These guys put themselves through hell. The Olympics is as much a testament to sheer human bloody mindedness as it is to sporting ability sometimes.
I remember when I worked at Mary Peters I was there for a 24-hour race. Now that was crazy. Some people are crazy. Ultra-marathons pretty much take the biscuit.

Really enjoying the womens handball. I haven't watched this before....oh thanks BBC...they've just cut to highlights of the men's hockey which is rather rude considering the handball had just gone into extra time because the teams were all square.

Cari,
Raging here as well. Was really enjoying that. Handball is such an exciting sport.
Played my first game of football for this season this afternoon. A team asked me to fill in. Was a pretty low standard. Won 4-3 which was good. Got myself a hat trick as well.
Yes, the handball is back on.

Oh thanks for mentioning that Munsty, I'd turned over to a non-BBC channel in disgust. It was a bit pig ignorant of them considering the hockey had been on live earlier, covered in the later news bulletin, and GB lost out on a medal.

Another period of extra time. This is so close. These are times where I wish they would think of the players somewhat and maybe just finish it as a draw.
I remember them doing that in a Currie Cup final about 8 years ago or so.

To just declare a draw would be unfair in itself though Munsty. Someone must come 1st. 2nd and 3rd for the medals and then 4th and so on. Imagine coming first and having to share it with someone else just because they drew when you could've done penalties? I don't understand why they don't just do penalties in this like football.

Oh they just said that after this extra time they will have penalties if it stays all square. They should've done that to start with really.

Back completely better so went for a tempo run today. Went way too fast on slow and way way too fast on fast section and cramped up. What a horrible exercise

Well not its not really unfair. In the boxing, both the semi finalists who lose get bronze.
Accepting that two teams are equals isn't a bad thing. Putting them through the ringer where the game suffers because of that is not necessary. It won't kill us to not know who I'd better.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I think that especially when it comes to the olympics, there has to be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd...that's what they work towards - winning, being better than their peers. Equality doesn't come into it. There has to be winners and losers. It's sport. Just like someone has to break the records, be the first to achieve something etc. It sets the standard, puts them above their equals and develops the sport. I know it's probably not PC or something to say it, but winning is paramount. Taking part just sets them apart from the amateurs, if they can beat their equals, even better. It can also mean earning a living from it.

Cari,
And that is why you get people taking performance enhancing drugs or cheating because wining is paramount. It is that attitude which justifies the actions to these people.

Yep, but that doesn't stop the majority who achieve greatness in their chosen sport through hard work, dedication and no corruption whatsoever.

Incredible by Fatah. Kind of wished I could have turned off the commentary though. He doesn't need their superlatives to boost what he just did there.

Excellent Rory! I hope you really enjoy it.
Munsty - agree on the commentary. Sometimes I just wish they'd shut up and let the coverage speak for itself.

Caught the end of Farah, beach gold got in the way. Still 180-200 with a 4 wood is pretty decent. Delighted for him and Team GB a stunning performance and stunning games. Congrats to him very likeable guy and well done to him and the rest of team GB.

Nevin will have to tear into him and beat him convincingly, the judges will favour the home fighter, but I'm confident after yesterday. He has beaten him before he can do it again.

Damn! Missed the 5000m.
For me, the biggest hit of the games was David Rushida in the Mens 800m though. That was UNREAL.

Evening guys and gals. Had a good day watching the currie cup.
I see we have now completed 6 medals, 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. Good showing for us, but that's it basically. Nothing more to come.
I would have been happy with 3 medals.

Jade Jones the taekwondo lass is well fit.
But jeez Mo Farah take an absolute bow son. Simply incredible. No other words to describe it. Sports personality is going to be difficult this year. I thought Bradley had it sown up. I wouldn't object at all if Mo got it though.

Me too. Overshdowed by Bolts exploits by the meeja perhaps. But not in my book.
The man has such grace and class. Adds to his athletic kudos.
Meanwhile the annual LoveLand gig is in full sesh in the park. I am 300 metres way from it and I can feel the bass running through my body.
Lots of young lads & lasses, from all over Europe, going back and forth in boats, to the stages. It really is an event. Love it.
