The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

Gutted for Paddy Barnes, he fought fantastically, 3rd round was epic. Very proud of him, but the poor cratur looked inconsolable at the end.
JJ was savage too, very classy boxer, took a lot of points from a simple jab, while his opponent went for the haymaker. This is at least as good as 1956 lads, Mick Conlon wins tonight and it's better. Savage stuff.

"I’m over the moon, we knew he was favourite, but the script is there to be overwritten, and I overwrote it.
"I was probably a bit of a show-off at the end – that’s the Mullingar shuffle. I’m just going one round at a time, one minute at a time."

Today's sailing gold means NZ are 15th on the medal table, between Iran and North Korea. Which probably means the yanks are going to invade us tomorrow

Combined with Australia 'we' are between Germany and South Korea though so we should be safe. (like in 1908 and 1912)
What's with the name change? Kiwireddevil is so distinctive and has a strong identity. Are you going to ditch that bit?

The change is a recognition that half the site knows my name anyway. I'm probably going to leave it as is though, I've been using the alias in tipping comps etc for over a decade.Linebreaker wrote:Combined with Australia 'we' are between Germany and South Korea though so we should be safe. Similarly if we combine the African medals we lie between Germany and France.Linebreaker wrote:Combined with Australia 'we' are between Germany and South Korea though so we should be safe. (like in 1908 and 1912)

Evening all
Hope everyone is well on this glorious sunny Friday. I'm currently at Sunbury waiting for London Irish to kick off the first pre season friendly against Nottingham. Whilst I like the MadStad as a stadium, there is a part of me that wishes we could develop thus place and play here in the Premiership.

You had the same problem Wasps did, Oz. Planning application flatly refused as it's a residential area. Sudbury was a dump of a place, but the bar sold more pints of Pride on match days than you could shake a stick at.

The start of Ligue 1 is on tonight on ESPN. I've decided to follow it this year after the club of my favourite French town won the comp and what is going on in Paris is quite exciting. Be good to have another strong league in Europe with the German and Russian leagues developing well.
Watched the handball semi earlier on between Sweden and Hungary. What a fantastic game. I really hope this sport kicks off in the UK as I'm really tempted to get involved.
Sister is back as well tonight so can quiz her on the Katy Taylor fight from yesterday.

Evening all.
- don't talk to me about being knackered. I've not long woken up having fallen asleep when I got home from work...that was about two/three hours ago...
Ospreys lost to ASM in their "friendly" 49 - 25. I put friendly in commas because there were a couple of yellows. Business as usual then....not a bad score considering it wasn't the full O's team.

Hoi Cari
That would have been a good challenge for the Os. I can see you having a good season in Europe. Tough HC pool, but there is a different mentality there these days.
Hope to see you on 25th when Ealing rock up to play Cardiff. Penfro has promised to take me to the City Arms.

You sure you were just on the De Koninck gibbo??
Fair play to Die Nederland women's hockey team; and the men handed us our worst ever defeat (9-2).
It's not going to burst the bubble though. By that I mean hosting these games - I can't believe how well it's gone. Plus the nice things being said about it all by people from all over the world who are here.
I hope this city kicks on from this.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Morning All
- the support from the spectators has been fantastic for this olympics. Despite the shaky start due to poor ticket organisation, it's been brilliant - every single event seems to be full of crowds. I hope the paralympics gets the same support. The football in Cardiff had a huge crowd last night even though it was the bronze medal match between Korea and Japan. I think there must've been 40-50K. One of my friends went and enjoyed herself. My sister managed to get olympic tickets in the end too. She wanted some for equestrian events, but ended up with BMXing and the Handball I think. She's not bothered about that though, just glad to get something as she got no tickets originally.
Just watching the men's walking race. They walk up and down a road and it can take 3.5 hours! Phew! Spotted an Irish fella and a Brit in the middle of the group. The Russians are bossing it at the minute though.
And yes, it would be great to see you again when you pop down to the Diff. Drop me a message nearer the time and we'll sort something out
More taekwondo on now. Who'd have thought you could get a medal in a sport where you score more for kicking someone in the face?

Heffernan (Irishman) could be in with a chance of a medal in the 50km walk. I don't know how they do it. They've been walking for nearly three and a half hours and they've got about another ten minutes to go.

That's a shame Kia, because about 15 minutes or so ago, he was looking at a possible bronze medal. Ah well. Them's the breaks. What a tough event it is though.
He came 4th anyway, and only by 32 seconds.

One of the things they don't often tell you about the Olympics, Cari is that 4th 5th and 6th get certificates! So although no medal there, he has something to remember this race by. He did really well.

I honestly didn't know that about the certs Kia. He looked very pleased with himself. I think with these types of events, the time is more important to the individual rather than where they come in. He might've got a personal best for himself.

I heard abotu that years ago when Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland came in 4th in the 5000m in whatever games he was in (can't remember which it was).
But I think you can judge the quality of a race, not be the winnner, but by how everyone else does. In this race of the first twenty finishers, all bar 3 (8th, 18th and 20th) came home with OR (Olympic record), NR (National Record), PB or SB (Personal / Season best) after their time. Quite some race given the heat etc.
