The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

As long as dog fighting never becomes a sport, Michael Vick and the US would dominate it with ease....

I think I've mentioned this before, but my eldest niece used to struggle with the pronunciation of 'fetch' and used to say 'and.... b!tch!' when she was throwing something for their dog. It was a sad day when she learnt how to say it properly.

Some serious smack talk coming out from Katie's opponent, hoping she knocks some sense into her later.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Morning all,
Back on line after a fantastic week down at 's place. I have some 400 photos from the trip, will be trying to get them loaded to my photosharing site when I remember the password, as well as doing a highlights reel on FB.
SANZAR have splurged a bit on the new trophy: https://www.facebook.com/events/116485638493429/#!/photo.php?fbid=10150987707758093&set=a.10150182285003093.308936.47887268092&type=1&theater
And I can only assume the poor bbq had been massively overworked: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-19184803

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Hi Thom,
Have a look here for some ideas http://www.derryvisitor.com/
Tourist things would be the obvious ones : walking the walls and peace bridge, the guildhall the cathedrals, tower museum etc.
Plenty of restauraunt in the city centre all near each other. Personally I like the Exchange, Fitzroys, mama masalas, city hotel but they're all much a muchness. Cafe del Mondo is quite nice for lunch or a coffee.
If he has a car then then North coast inc. Giants causeway, Carrick a rede, Bushmills etc. as well as the Inishowen peninsula are all within an hours drive.
If you want any other info let me know.

2.5 hours to KT time. excitement is building around the place, reckon our canteen will be jammed. Can’t wait.
I’ve very vivid memories of sitting in my living room with all my family watching Wayne McCullough and Michael Caruth fighting in Barcelona in 92, I would have been 7. I can still see Caruth leaping around the ring with the ref holding one of his arms, what a win that was, really hope we can get that again.

Also today is probably one of the few days I will ever say it would be great to be in Bray.

GB long distance swimmer David Davies on Keri-Anne Payne's fourth place in the 10km open water marathon: "It is a tough sport and Keri-Anne has worked very hard. It is cruel. I don't know why she didn't get the result she wanted."

Ah how gutting would it be to swim 10km and not win a medal. That’s a seriously hardy sport right there.
Watched the womens hocky last night, flippin amazing. The Dutch team were excellent. Also they were hotties, but that’s just an aside. Stephanie Van As (I think her name was?), shwiiiiiiing!
T, i do forget you're only a chisler yourself, probably because you go on like an aulfella!

Thank you?
Micko, you should watch the women's football final tonight. A couple of hotties on the US team some with inappropriate names like that Dutch lass.....
Beach Volleyball final was superb yesterday it is a great sport to watch, it's weird how you say you won't be too bothered by the Olympics and then get hooked.

T, gonna have to disagree with you there - how can you have a team sport in which the same team competes for the gold medal? Its laughable and should go imoThomond wrote:Thank you?

I was sick of the buildup, I’m sure a lot of us were, but now I’m like stick on the handball there love, France and Spain are continuing a bitter rivalry tonight.
I still won’t watch the football though, feels too familiar to me, almost like it doesn’t fit.

Is it really different from Jamaica getting gold and silver in the sprinting, the best teams qualify and get to the final, it happens in other sports too like, don't see a problem with it too be honest.

So the final of the women's volleyball was contested by two teams from the same country? Why were they allowed to enter two 'national' sides?

It happens in doubles table tennis Asbo.
I'm not a fan of beach volleyball but because of the fact it was brought into the 96 Olympics at the behest of NBC just to boost rating amongst men.
My sister is going to be at the Katie Taylor fight tonight. Hopefully it can be one of those "I was there when..." moments.

I'm guessing it's because beach volleyball is "pairs" rather than full-on teams. And when it was added to the Olympics most of the best pairings were Brazillian or American, so they wanted to have more than a couple of the top five pairs competing.
I have an 8.20 netball game tonight so will miss the 200m . I've had to rope in 3 fill-ins as half my team have Olympic tickets this evening

I'm with you Munsty. Diving chest first on the sand does not appeal to me - and I was born on an iconic beach... well up the road a bit.
Also I have a well-founded gripe with the so-called personalities. The way they carry on. It's over-rated by many on here I believe.
Give me the indoor version any day. I prefer the 'roll' technique.

Unfortunately (or fortunately if you're not British) the cycling law makers only allowed one entry per country, per event to stop GB hogging gold silver and bronze.
They also dictated that participants in tge keirin had to come from the pursuit team (if a country fielded one) knowing full well that would make it difficult for GB + France, Ger
They also ditched the kilo race because GB (Hoy) was unbeatable.

But Road racing is only one team from each country, each one 4 individuals in a bunch race, rather like Blake and Bolt and Powell in the sprints.
It is completely different to a country putting in multiple teams in a team sport where 2 teams play each other one on one which is frankly unfair unless all team sports are treated the same.
