The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sea of Tranquility, Luna
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to the Moon, in honour of the late Neil Armstrong. One small step for man ...
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Lance Armstrong in yellow, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin moonwalking, or the shot of Joe Ansbro breaking the line.

If I was really interested I could watch the games online I suppose, but I don't feel the need really.

Kiwi, Pete & Stag,
Listened to about 10 mins of the podcast - nice to hear your voices but could only hear Pete and Stag loud and clear.
Great idea though.

Kiwi has a throat infection so he was a bit quieter than he normally would be, and there seems to be a strange thing where Stag and I come out the right headphone/speaker and Kiwi the left.
Are you on Skype breaker? Would be good to get an Australian perspective on the Rugby Championship on there at some point.

I agree. Now that I listen back I gave Paul O'Connell a right old bashing.
I didn't mean it as harsh as it sounded. My basic point was that he is so wrapped in cotton wool and usually comes in for Munster plays just 1-2 matches and has a break. This doesn't translate well to things like 6 Nations, RWC or Lions where you need to turn in a top display every game for 6-7 weeks.

I was about to say I like your "very, very poor" comment Staggy. So for 7 tries that would make 14 'very's
Need to do a little research next time. When I heard the "don't know why they are doing do poorly" bit, this sprang to mind.
Here, have a read.
Linebreaker wrote:Nice list there Biltong. A lot of brawn, heavy bones and steel missing - which no doubt is a huge loss.
I had a think about our tattered team too. Since the RWC it's around 25 players either injured, retired or 'AWOL'.
OK, you can argue a few of the following players are uncapped and therefore unproven at International level but for a tiny little country like ours - that's all we bloody got!
Front Row:
Sekope Kepu
Selesi Ma’afu
Tatafu Polota-Nau
Locks/Flankers/No 8s:
James Horwill
Dan Vickerman [R]
Ben McCalman
David Pocock
Matt Hodgson
Pat McCutcheon
Jake Schatz
Rocky Elsom [AWOL/R]
Wycliff Palu
Halves:
Christian Lealiifano
Matt Toomua
Nic White
Centres/Wingers/Fullbacks:
James O’Connor
Drew Mitchell
LachieTurner
Pat McCabe
Cooper Vuna
Joseph Tomane
Dom Shipperly
Nick Cummins
Rod Davies
Bernard Foley
Ben Lucas
The 'good news' is our 2 replacements:
Paddy Ryan (prop), Mitch Inman (centre)
ffs, if we can scrape another win against Pakistan in the cricket in Abu Dhabi... I'll be slightly happier.

Afternoon all. There was a fair bit in that SW Argus article on The Dragons that is perfect ammunition for the French and English clubs in their bid to revamp HC qualification from the Rabo.
Just saying
Lovely day in the SW - shame I'm heading back to London now.

Nah there isn't. We don't have to worry ourselves with Heineken qualification you see, so we can do what we want. You're just scared that you'll have 23 fresh heading to Gomez Park.

I agree we may struggle to fight on 2 fronts, especially with what is perceived as lack of squad depth. However, I am confident we will make the Playoffs in the AP and knock-out rugby in Europe and some at least of our youngsters will step up and if we get that far we just take things a game at a time as they come. You are right that currently it looks like Evans being a little injury prone and getting older is a big issue with Clegg not looking up to speed, but I hope Botica will help take the pressure off of Clegg and if he continues to struggle, maybe replace him. He was apparently impressive in pre-season. We will need Nick to be fit for the big games though (and the other Nick, Easter, too preferably)

I am very jealous of you CJ.
I love the Paralympics. I think growing up at the time when Tanni Grey-Thompson and David Roberts were so successful, it's always juts had that much more media coverage here in Wales. Am glad it's finally getting a proper airing on tv for more people to watch. Read something on twitter y'day that NBC are only showing 5 and a half hour's of highlights in America. That's disgraceful if true.

From what I've heard about Olympic coverage, NBC are an awful channel. My first hand experience of what TV/the media in any form whatsoever are like in America leads me to believe this is both true and yet not anything out of the ordinary for America. But then, I don't believe in the right of an absolute free press so I'm probably not the person to talk about this

Nah T, think we were 3rd in Beijing so aiming for 2nd here, we got over 40 golds last time out though, so fingers crossed for more of the same here
Ireland look to have sent a pretty big team, or at least bigger than the one they sent to the Olympics, they looked like they were having a blast in the opening ceremony.
oooh another medal! bronze this time!

I'm surprised no one is talking about the Notre Dame v Navy game on Saturday in the Aviva (dublin). 35K yanks over for it. Loads of stuff going on.
Going to be televised live across the US and youtubed as well.
Navy have a battleship coming in for it on Saturday.

NBC would show a good amount if it fit the US timezone which it doesn't, they tend to focus more on the US athletes anyway much like RTE or BBC so I wouldn't expect great coverage much like BBC and RTEs main channel stuff was pretty awful.
Ireland sent more to the Olympics I'm pretty sure but more people sat out the Olympic one to rest for upcoming events.
Sin I'm going to it, superb event, love the sport. Let's go Navy!

It might be awful CJ but they got massive audiences out in the states for the Olympics. American tv is pretty poor on the whole though from what I remember, sometimes the advert breaks were longer than the programmes they are showing!
T - hmm yeah maybe that was it. Great to see such a big team though.

Yes it is RD and they have a good shot at success, Smyth in the sprinting won double gold at 100m and 200m last time I think and wasn't far from qualifying for the proper olympics despite only having 10% vision I think it is. Stag's brother did an interview with him: http://adrugcalledsport.blogspot.ie/2012/07/the-olympic-series-jason-smyth.html
One Cork paper previewed the athletes from these parts and there were 2 or 3 deemed to be great medal candidates I would guess 5 or 6 would be expected at least.

Interviewed a couple other olympians as well Stag also enjoyed the podcast, I said on the thread you 3 are kind of stereotypical of your places of birth at least in voice terms anyway!
Sin, it is the largest ever crowd to travel over to a game from the US I believe I got tickets last night luckily, should be interesting have gone to the game in London for the NFL. I could see the Steelers coming to Ireland at some stage if this is successful although I don't know if this shows how much interest there is in the sport over here given the us crowd travelling over.

Its more a cultural exchange I think (and a sort of launching of The Gathering next year). Apparently demand in the US exceeded supply of tickets in the US - they could have done with 10K more so you are lucky to get a ticket.
Its being broadcast from 9am on CBS in the US tomorrow. Also on internet channel and ESPN.
Navy are having their prep/pep thing tomorrow evening in Stephens Green. Notre Dame have 10K tickets sold (for charity) to a do in the Point. Miriam O'Callaghan is hosting it and its going out on RTE & in US.
Notre Dame are having a Mass in Dublin Castle on Sat morning (expecting 5K) which is a bit weird!

Religion is an incredbile thing in America, Christianity and the various denominations but others are massive there. It is odd in Ireland to talk about God or anything like that (Katie Taylor seems to be the one who talks openly about it) but in America it is done by most athletes.
Have you heard of Tim Tebow? That tells you about the power of religion in the US right there!

I agree Sin É. I think the highlights are good but watching a game is like rugby with a scrum every forty seconds.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sea of Tranquility, Luna
I used to love American Football. When it started on Channel 4 back in the 80s, with Nicky Horne and then Mick Luckhurst presenting the show, I never missed it.
Watching quarterbacks like Dan Marino, John Elway and Joe Montana, and John Riggins (Diesel), and Walter Peyton (Sweetness) at running back was great. Not to mention wide receivers like Jerry Rice.
William (the fridge) Perry was a cult hero for many, and really made the game popular here.
In terms of average attendance, The London Monarchs were the best supported sports team in the UK in the first European league season. Saw them at Wembley a couple of times. Great experience.
The Pats are my team but I also loved the Redskins and their 'counter tray' play. There have been some great players since, no doubt, but the 80s/90s were fantastic.
Ah...nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

I'd love it if there were scrums every forty seconds against Glasgow tomorrow Stag. Think it would win the game for us.

Sorry Irish guys, you wouldn't have seen the Channel 4 programme I referred to, but the format was great. Highlights of a featured game, and key scores from all the others.
Notch, are Glasgow perceived to be weak in the scrum?

Us Nordies watched it Hound. I was a fan in the 80's as well. I think mostly because it was new and there wasn't much else on the TV sport wise except the footie.
