First topic message reminder :

Of course there are shades of grey but ultimately nobody can be sent to jail for saying they would like to kiddy fiddle but won't as it's illegal and cannot include consent by definition.
They go to jail when they break the law by looking at images or worse acts. So what do you do, change the laws ? Having an open debate won't change the laws, it will still come down to the same thing.
So whether they are deemed evil by society or not is ultimately fairly irrelevant as far as I can see. The end game remains the same.

because i like to stay in half decent places..

its a very pricey city mate.. And that isnt overly extravagant for NY..

even the the pretty awfull accomodation in NY can set you back 200 a night!!

(btw i never go below 4 star for leisure)- for work thats different- i dont care!

Last time I went we booked the Soho House hotel, a really good hotel and we booked a suite, cost a bomb but I'd just got engaged the week before. Everyone assumed Id propose in NY but to be contrary I proposed in Brighton the week before.
Anyway the night before we flew out I got some kind of bug, barely madet he flight and spent 3 days in a luxury hotel unable to drink booze, eat anything much or make the beast with two backs with my fiance.
Gutting.

How did he take that, then? Wink

yeah the soho house looks nice, i had a look., but decided id rather stay in the south of central park and slighlty west of times square, Because I am not sure how the tubes are running because of the disasaster- I have reserved the sofitel and the marriot essex house- both look good value compared to others for a similar rating, but both have free cancellation so i am still pondering..

Except there's a statute of limitation on the # of terms a President can serve isn't there? Two strikes (max) and out isn't it? Didn't Clinton essentially leave the U.S. economy in a decent place (and look what Dubya did with it)? I'm sure a decent number have inherited a reasonable situation but Obama didn't.

There is of course a statute but logic would dictate that if a democratic president had done well you'd relect the next candidate surely ? The economy is only one issue here as well.

Navy -- Good observation. Some built in and impassable roadblocks in the House and Senate no matter who gets in. And I'm not sure all this is a bad thing. Pundits on both sides have predicted total meltdown long ago, depending upon who was "in power". Those pundits never get called to the carpet for the inflammatory crackpots they really are.

We spend too much on welfare (of all kinds), defense and healthcare administration in this country -- that, to me, is undeniable (but you can be sure there are some people with very high intellect who feel totally the opposite).

I would vote for a balanced budget amendment.

Nice story.

In a vaguely similar vein, I wonder if Ben Afleck's film "Argo" has been released in GB&I yet? Highly recommended, very highly recommended!

what i have read and heard is that scotland isnt a net contributer to the UK.

what salmond and his followers want everyone to believe is that the oil in scottish waters contributes more than the difference is.

However it has been proved by certain sources is that they use the top end oil valuations not what the oil was actually worth at the time, and they are predicting the future oil prices in a very positive light..

The facts are simple.. This is a very hard accounting issue to get perfect, but no credit rating agency is gonna give scotland a good credit rating based on oil resource because ot is so volitile!!

so if scotland became independant- there part of the UK debt is gonna increase significantly from day one due to an increase in the interest they need to pay!

Salmond is also basing the future debt cost on if scotland had the top rating as UK does at present!! this is clearly false!

Salmond is also basing scotlands independant financial position on what he feels should be scotlands assets and debts not what the rest of us in the uk value it as..

Oakey, if you look at the GERS report, then for the last year stats are available, then Scotland contributes 9.6% of revenue, and consumes 9.3% of government expenditure. The UK runs at a loss, but Scotland is contributing rather than taking. Salmond and Cameron both know these numbers are right, which is why Cameron is trying hard to keep Scotland in the Union. Without Scotland, the Labour party would struggle to be elected.

If you are going to NYC, then try Priceline or Laterooms, those rates being quoted are very high. The rack rate in NYC is high, but there are big discounts.

Actually, that's bollox and an urban fishwives myth. Only once has the contribution of Labour seats in Scotland been sufficient to sway Labour into power.
Didn't help this time did it, whilst they've only won three elections since 1979 so it's hardly been that important.

Also, I listened to Obama's "speech" this morning. Will the Americans' whoop at anything and everything?

Obama: " I just killed your dog"

Americans: "WHOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAA"

The speech this morning was pretty vomit inducing, we'd cringe at such shiversomely embarrassing words but Americans lap cheesiness like that up.
Easily pleased people. All they want to hear is how "great" they are.

Personally I think Norway actually is the greatest country on earth, but it's all a matter of opinion, rather than the "fact" to which Obama eluded.

Hmmm... Norway? Has only been independent for a century and full of nationalistic bigots. Their oil fortune was made possible only beacuse the Danish minister was drunk during the meeting when the North Sea was split up between Norway, Denmark and UK. Have you looked at a map? But OK, the Dutch bought Manhattan for a mirror and some glass pearls, so I guess we all have to do what we have to do. Macchiavelli didn't live in vain it seems.

But britain did shape it the most- we certainly come from a line of the most influencial peops on earth!

If norway is so great why do they all top them selves- btw I still rate norway. But (and almost certainly due to the light issues they have) we cant pronounce norway the best due to the fact there are so many sad dudes there.

It's not that high. It's 11.9 per 100,000. In the UK it's 6.9. Hardly big enough to disuade you from moving there.

Norway is only 0.1 per 100,000 higher than in the USA, the supposed greatest country in the world.

It's really not that bad. It's only really dark if you live really far north, and unless you live in Tromso or Trondheim it shouldnt be a problem. Chances are most work is in Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, very similar to UK in terms of daylight, but light, like SCotland for very long in summer.

It's a myth it's dark all winter, only north of the Arctic Circle.
I was in Oslo two weeks ago and it's so nice. No skanky people or pikeys at all, apart from a few beggars on the streets, but you get them everywhere.

... and breathe out.

So then, America has severed its right wing. What will the republicans do now? Will they dump the nutjob and re-evaluate their ideology by moving towards the centre? That's two in a row they've lost now and, at the very least, it seems to me they need to bring in someone who can bring something to the table that doesn't smack of meaningless rhetoric.

Oh, and given the obscene amounts of money spent on this campaign, perhaps it's time to slap a limit on this whole ridiculous pantomime.

i was in Oslo/ Stockholm/ Helsinki with work a couple of times in the last year and they really are great places to live from what i can make out. the cost of livings does seem very high though.
i know taxes are low in Oslo- are they similar elsewhere in the nordics?

These countries are only expensive as a tourist, once you are on the local salary you are far better off and things seem affordable. It's all relative to how much you get paid. £8 a pint is normal if you earn more for your job than you would in the UK.
Interestingly, In the depths of winter Oslo only has 2 hours fewer daylight hours a day than London. Not that great a difference.

Well actually SR i think things are differently priced out there- IE cost of a house/rent would be much less in reagrds to the average salary, but things like beers and restuarnts are much higher in regards to there average salary compared with the UK.

In actual fact the average dissposible income is actually less in Norway compared to the UK- even though they are very high up(8th) to UK's 6th.

by the way Norways tax is higher than in the UK

Oakey, I know that, but from what I've heard from colleagues who work in Nor/Den its still worth it after tax and for the increase in quality of life and better summer weather, standard of living. Pensions etc (which are 75% in many cases by the way)
The quality of housing is way better than in the UK.

Super, are you a complete idiot. You would be cheering if you had just dodged the bullet of having your country run by mitt Romney and a republican majority in the house.

mysti

The whole point of using priceline is to get 4/5 star hotels for well less than $300 a night.

Mac, it wasn't the reason for celebration, but the manner in which Americans fawn, whoop, holler and cheer in such an over the top and inappropriate manner which irks me. Decorum, class, dignity and measured response are something they don't do very well. I'm surprised no one shouted "Mashed Potato"
