First topic message reminder :
Of course there are shades of grey but ultimately nobody can be sent to jail for saying they would like to kiddy fiddle but won't as it's illegal and cannot include consent by definition.
They go to jail when they break the law by looking at images or worse acts. So what do you do, change the laws ? Having an open debate won't change the laws, it will still come down to the same thing.
So whether they are deemed evil by society or not is ultimately fairly irrelevant as far as I can see. The end game remains the same.

I prefer bands Oakey that don't have the commercial success. Much more interesting. Once they get to the mainstream they tend to go downhill.

I'm going to assume you mean Bloc Party.
The trouble with almost any band is that to some extent they build on what went before. Generally I find that if a band is called "innovative", all it means is that their influences were more obscure.

Edgy stuff that might be innovative doesn't seem to get played on radio here, sad truth that most music in the wider public domain is from artists who are in their thirties, forties or worse.
I think our generation saturated the edgy stuff market Kwini. There's nothing left to innovate and or shock in music now...it's all been done.
Of current artists I'd pay money to see Amy MacDonald, might even pay to see one of her gigs as well.
I'm trying to think of the last "current" artiste I went to see live that hasn't been around for at least 15 years and...I can't.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Odd discussion. The question seems to have morphed as answers have been suggested and rejected.
x doesn't count because it's not recent enough [are we now saying 15 years?], y doesn't count because in someone's subjective view the music is not good enough despite commercial global success [which is what I thought the q was originally asking?], z doesn't count because non-Brits don't actually associate with UK...
Spice Girls perhaps? Presumably falls into the y category above.

Right now I'd say Mumford are the most popular new-ish British band to be successful here, but they've been around for quite a while now. Different but you wouldn't want to endure a steady diet of them.
JAS, Can't think of Amy McDonald without smiling at "The Lovely Aimi MacDonald" from At Last The 1948 Show, but now I'm really showing my age.

X And Y for The Spice Girls Sky.
We can probably add another in that no one would want to be associated with it.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
yeah nice folky feel to her..
I think the problem is these days is saturation tbh and so many avenues to get the music out there..which is great but where do you start!! i go through spotify all the time listening to music i have no idea what it is!! but then i like all genres
there are loads more good musicians out there today, its really hard to be defined as one of the best. I really dont think there is any less quality today- just a better field strength- like golf i suppose!!

Yeah that's way before my time Kwini
Check Amy out on YouTube, she does a couple of acoustic covers of Springsteen classics.
On a slightly different tack it never ceases to amaze me how some artists transcend borders but others just don't. I suppose it must be down to marketing but even so. E.g. Has anyone in the UK heard of Collective Soul?

Really? Blimey, I was sure they were around in the late 90's.
Or are you now saying that the artist needs to have STARTED in the last 15 years...?

Recent for heavens sake.
If you were talking about a golf shot you'd "recently" played and someone asked "when was that then?" and you replied 1998 you'd get laughed at.

Isn't he in the Crooning C**t/Housewives Favourite/Pant Wetting Granny genre?
I remember a newspaper headline which was Michael Mooble because he had big Shane Lowry jubblies on the beach.

Sounds like him.
He isnt a Goth so you wouldnt like him. Its pretty clear you wouldnt like anything that a large amount of people enjoy as that wouldnt allow you too feel special and superior.

I'm not a fan of goth either. I've never heard Buble, but I'm not against a bit of easy listening crooning like Matt Munro, Frank Sinatra or even Harry Connick Jr.

Worst gig I ever went to was taking my parents to see Daniel O'Donnell, knew I was in trouble when coach loads of pensioners kept turning up in wheelchairs.
Mind you Cliff Richard came on as an unexpected guest star halfway through, Ive never seen a bunch of geriatrics go mental like that, quite scary. Some of them rushed the stage, think my Mum would of as well if we werent on the top tier.

Connick is (or at least used to be) an unbelievable pianist [PIANIST, I said] and also wrote a few of his own songs, so has (or at least had) a bit more to him than crooning. And then he went into acting, and that's pretty much when I lost track of him.

Off to see the great Leonard Cohen in his Montreal hometown in a couple of weeks - forty years since I last saw him at the Albert Hall. Hope he survives that long.
JAS,
Collective Soul a bit of a small repertoire for moi, couple of great songs though.
Best show I saw so far this year was Grace Potter opening for a Barack Obama speech. They both rocked the place . . . . . .

You know who else had a great set of pipes? The lead singer for the Housemartins. I think he/they evolved into the Beautiful South. Another guilty pleasure -- not brown bag guilty mind you.

Housemartins were much better than TBS.
The Beautiful South played when I was at Uni once, same night my mate was having a party which got a bit out of control. He went into the kitchen to find Paul Heaton (said lead singer of Housemartins/TBS doing the dishes.

Im not that big a fan of gigs, would usually rather just listen to the music.
In fact my first gig was probably my best, The Smiths back in about 1983, mental.
Most disapointing probably Elvis Costello, whose music I love, very dull live.
Would have loved to have seen Simon and Garfunkel live, Queen at their peak...before all the I want to break free rubbish...and Nina Simone who apparently was either awful of brilliant depending on how the mood took her.

Yep - Housemartins were good. Thought XTC who overlapped with them a bit and had a similar eclectic and irreverent style, were just that little bit better.

Bob, first single I bought was Senses Working Overtime by XTC, as was Sgt Rock.
Couldnt stand TBS but Housemartins did a couple of decent tunes.

Two first singles?
I don't think I ever bought a single - couldn't see the point. I was more an album man.
The album version of TBS's Don't Marry Her is quite entertaining.
