India v England First ODI Thread
First topic message reminder :
The first of the 5 match ODI series between India and England will be played at Rajkot tomorrow at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium.
England will be on a high after their test series win last month. They are the top ranked ODI side in the world and had a fine 2012 in a format where they struggled in the past.
With Kevin Pietersen back after all those issues, the batting is further strengthened. Ian Bell who struggled big during the test series has found some form in the warm up matches and captain Alastair Cook is in the form of his life and has a special place in his heart for Indian bowling.
As far as the playing side goes, Cook, Bell, Pietersen and Morgan pick themselves. Craig Kieswetter should be the favorite to start the series with the gloves, but Jos Buttler's explosive batting might see him being picked. Samit Patel's handy 2nd string and the fact that he's a spinner might see him being picked at 7. In the bowling department, Steven Finn picks himself, and as Graeme Swann is rested, James Tredwell should be the first choice spinner. Jade Dernbach's experience and his decent showing in the warm ups might see him being picked over Stuart Meaker.
As far as India are concerned, they'll be going into the series under a lot of pressure having lost the home test series as well as a home ODI series against Pakistan. The process of change started with the axing of Zaheer Khan from the test side and his continued non-selection in the limited over squads. Now for this series, the underperforming opener Virender Sehwag found himself axed and Cheteshwar Pujara's selection is not just recognition of his performances, but also a notice to struggling opener gautam Gambhir. Gambhir might get to start series though, and Ajinkya Rahane should now get a run in the side. The middle order picks itself with Kohli, Yuvraj,Dhoni, Raina and Ravindra Jadeja as the all-rounder. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma and the youngster Shami Ahmed should form the bowling unit.
This is the first international game at the SCA stadium. When the domestic Challenger Trophy was played, the BCCI had to ask for an explanation as to why did the batsmen had it all very easy out there on the track.
The 12 PM start should ensure the dew factor won't have too much of a say.

poor start again from Bres then a tough catch chance.
india should have this. ashwin is taking them on. if they could bowl him they'd pressure them but he looks too good.

Rahane gave it away, Gambhir as usual did the same. The rest of them had to play the shots and it was fair enough, but the way the openers gave it away after getting a start was criminal and that is coming back to haunt India.

Good to see India still fighting. But they lost too many wickets to make a comeback here.

yeah they have this. horrible feeling eng won't get many chances to get close in the series so a shame if they let it slip.

well.. if ever it were needed.
India are still winning!!! Sky keep pointing it out, they seem pretty sure India have it with a 12 run lead if they don't get this right.
and a 4.. India have this.

Re: India v England First ODI Thread
Twenty seven needed from two ,which is closer than I expected to be honest.
So Bresnan and Dernbach just have to keep nine.ten.jack under 14 each over...
Bresnan not starting well with an edged four and a high no ball...he does need to just keep his nerve.

Glad of that flying Patel finish I must admit...Bresnan bowls Dinda so it appears they will win by only ten to fifteen.

A win's a win, I think we can take heart from the batting display. Bowling was poor on the whole, I think we're still the underdogs.

Re: India v England First ODI Thread
All the England seamers have gone for sixty odd. But none got hit for 86 like poor Sharma...
These pitches are tough on fast bowlers. Fun for batsmen though
Dernbach finishes it off with a modest over for seven
England 1-nil

Credit where it is due for Dernbache. Much tidier.
eng have lost their last 13 against india in india apparently.
so a second string end it.
weird.

gotta fancy india to win the rest but at least this selection won't be nilled.
another gen where constant comparisons will probably show their isn't much between them in practice probably.

Re: India v England First ODI Thread
So having lost the lastt couple of series 0-5, England have started the process of turning the tables here, they have won the first ODI of the 5 match series by 9 runs.
This is their best chance in a long time to win an ODI series in India, India played a lot better than expected, but not good enough at the end.

Get in there. For once has to be said, the batters have won the game for England today for a change. Fantastic knocks from all of them and that last partnership between Patel and Kieswetter was crucial. Special mention to Tredwell who bowled magnificently.

They tied the world cup one, and many of the previous games were also a second string
Basic point stands though. As with the test series this is a big turn around for england in india

A pretty good match as ODIs go...high scoring but close , swung back and forth...
I feel for the bowlers though , really is set up for them to be used as punching bags...would like just a little help in the pitch for them.
Good start for Cook/Giles .

Re: India v England First ODI Thread
Great game, with the result still really in doubt until the last but one over.
England generally batted well, but were maybe a little slow scoring through the middle of the innings. Good think Patel and Kies added about 20 more than par in the last two overs.
India's chase - well, about 4 or 5 times it looked like they were establishing a lead, but each time a wicket fell just to halt their progress.
Not a great bowling performance by England other than Tredwell (although Root and Patel did OK between them with the '5th bowler' overs). OK, Dernbach came back well at the end to take a couple of important wickets, but he gives too many runs away in the rest of his overs and so releases pressure to easily.

That's a good win but the bowling does look weak and will no doubt cost us a match or two. Still make India favourites for the series to be honest, but good if we can at least add another win to this.

England should have a strong squad for NZ hopefully.
Recent form and the raving I hear about Aussies seamers would probably make them favourites to win the Ashes this year wouldn't it btw?
