Welcome to Season 5 of the Aviva Premiership fantasty rugby game. Below are the rules of the game which must be adhered to. If there are any situations that arise in the course of the game which are not covered by the rules, a final decision will be made by the RFU (Ozzy3213) as to how the situation will be resolved.

Senior Squads wrote:
The maximum squad size is 40 senior players. If a team has more than 40 players in their squad then they will be fined £1 million per player over the permitted amounts per day for the first seven days. If after 7 consecutive days a team still has more than the permitted number of players then the team will be fined £2 million per player per day, and fined 1 league point per player per day for the next seven days. If after this time a team still has more than the permitted number of players in their squad, the RFU (me) will remove players at it’s discretion to bring them back under the permitted numbers. There will be no right of appeal to players being removed.

Be aware that all tier one international matches which are played during the season will count in the game, and players selected in the matchday 22's for those matches will not be eligible to play for their clubs on that weekend, therefore you must give due consideration to the make up of your squad.

Academy Rules wrote:
Each team will be allowed to have a listed senior academy squad of 20 players. Players who are in the senior academy must be under 22 years of age as of 1st September 2012 (therefore must have been born on or after 1st Septmber 1990). Players who are under the age of 20 (so born after 1st September 1992) AND are in the academy of the club that you are managing in real life, DO NOT need to be listed as senior academy players as part of your 20, but are available to you in this game and cannot be poached by other clubs without paying you a fee.

Should a player not listed in your 20 senior academy players, but part of the clubs academy in real life move clubs in real life, then you will have first option of promoting him to your listed senior academy. If you choose not to take this option he will become property of the club that he moves to in real life in this game.

Transfers wrote:

  • Domestic (other AP Teams)
Each team has a budget to use in the purchase of players. Domestic transfers between AP clubs, regardless of nationality of player, should be negotiated between the respective managers, and then confirmed on the Domestic Transfer Confirmation Page.

  • Domestic (Championship and below)
Each team may during the season purchase no more than 3 players from the Championship or the National Leagues. These players must be bid for on the Championship/National League bidding page, and each bid will be considered by me on it's own merits before being accepted or rejected. No bid will be accepted until a minimum of 24 hours has elapsed from the time the bid was made, in order to afford other managers the opportunity to make a counter bid.

  • Foreign
To make a foreign transfer (i.e from any club outside of the AP, regardless of whether the player is English) a bid should be made on the Foreign Transfers Page, which will be considered by me against the posted guidelines for purchase prices before being accepted or rejected. No bid will be accepted until a minimum of 24 hours has elapsed from the time the bid was made, in order to afford other managers the opportunity to make a counter bid.

Foreign transfers will unlimited during the off season and 2 during the season. The exact dates of the two transfer windows during the season is to be confirmed.

Player Releases wrote:
Managers may choose to release players from their clubs, for which they will be offered compensation

Compensation will be paid as follows

£2 million – current international (must have played international rugby in the previous 12 months)
£1.5 million – former international
£1m – top flight experience
£0.5m – other

If a released player plays in real life for a team outside of this game he will be deemed to have returned to that team. If not then he will be deemed to have signed for a Championship side. If another manager wants to pick a released player up, they will have to bid for him in the same way as for a foreign or Championship/National League player.

Retirements wrote:
There will be no compensation for retiring players. Should a player who retires decide to come out of retirement and play again, then he will automatically go back to the club who he was playing for in the game when he retired.

Fixtures wrote:
There will be 22 Aviva Premiership games per season, plus the play offs. There will also be Heineken Cup, Amlin Challenge Cup and Anglo Welsh Cup matches. These games will take place once a week. A thread will be put up for managers to name their teams on Thursdays, then on Fridays, managers will post the scores that they think will happen from these games (apart from games in which they are involved). An average of all predictions will be taken, and then 0.5 points added to each teams score for each prediction that had them as the winner, and that will then be the final score.

Teams wrote:
When naming your team, not only should you put the starting XV and replacements, but also tactics that your team will employ. Results will be affected by the tactics described.

In addition, each team must have the following:-

At least 10 England qualified players in your matchday 23, and at least 5 of those must be in your starting XV.

At least 2 props and 1 hooker on the bench.

All players must be eligible (not injured or banned).

Failure to comply with these rules will result in forfeiting the match and a 1 league point deduction.

If you fail to submit a team for a match, then the other team will be automatically awarded a 30-0 bonus point win. If both teams fail to submit a team, then it will be scored as a 0-0 draw.

Injuries and Suspensions wrote:
Injuries in this game do NOT reflect real life, they will be generated by me.

Players banned in real life will be ineligible for selection in this game for the duration of the ban.

Inclusion of injured/banned players will result in them being replaced by players on the bench, and the bench not having eight players, which may result in punishment if it concerns the front-row.

Punishment for fielding an ineligible player will be loss of one match point for a first offence, two for a second offence and so on.

Financial Rewards wrote:
There will be no rewards for the result of an individual match, instead the managers will receive cash for predicting.

£1.5m for descriptive predictions
£0.25m for scores on the doors predictions
If you fail to predict without first advising me that you are unable to do so that week, you will be fined £1m for a first offence, £2m for a second offence, £3m for a third offence etc.

I have to say the rugby supporters in general are becoming a bit of a laughing stock for me. The exaggerated reaction following England beating NZ and Wales beating England have been downright embarrassing.

I am looking forward to seeing the Lions index on the rugby club special tonight. Last week the whole back 5 were English as were the half backs. Interesting to see how it fairs now.

A half decent side, probably the least biased one I've seen. No Youngs or Phillips is surprising mind.

They'd be my 3 scrummies, Laidlaw/Phillips/Youngs.

Can't understand how Heaslip makes any Lions XV, he's been bloody awful.

It's amazing how one bad result changes everything. I didn't think Wales where much kop against anyone tbh.

Adam Jones has admitted to dropping 6 scrums against England to avoid the nudge in the knowledge that Steve Walsh is a poor scrum ref.

If i was picking the Lions tomorrow it would be.

I can't help but think that the Welsh might have gone out in large numbers to vote for this one too.

Is strange how one game changes everything, like you say Nick it seems that people have forgotten how bad Ireland have been throughout apart from 40mins against Wales.

as were getting closer does anyone have any Lions bolters?

I think Tipuric, Warburton and Robshaws form has ruled out Steffon Armitage seeing as Wood and SOB can cover their too.

Likewise Jenkins and Healy playing well probably rules out Sheridan.

If Burns hadnt of got injured and had continued his form he would of had a shout but think Biggar might of gone ahead of him now as 3rd fly half between Sexton and Farrell.

Halfpenny is the only player everyone seems to agree on, and even then Hogg (especially) and Kearney have both had good tournaments.

Scott has been good and has a chance of touring. Roberts has had good games but then poor ones as well. Barritt unlikely to go. I'd still like to see Manu there but unlikely.

12 a problem position for Lions.

May should be nowhere near a Lions shirt. I'd like to see Roberts, Marshall and 36 go.

Centre is an issue for me. Need to get the partnership right and I dont know if Roberts / Tuilagi works. A lot of pundits saying Tuilagi at 12 but he doenst play there for club or country so not a fan of doing that.

Roberts / BOD or Roberts / Davies is a sensible idea but hard to leave out Tuilagi!

Halfpenny is nailed on. If Sexton is fit I would say he is too.

Whilst everyone agrees on halfpenny I don't think he is nailed on. Take away his goal kicking and what does he have? Kearney the best all round full back, Hogg the best in attack and Halfpenny the best form.

Halfpenny solid but take away kicking and he's not a standout. I'd prefer Kearney.

Halfpenny definite starter for me, think he was exceptional during the 6Nations. Really strong area for the Lions though.

Normally at this stage you would know half your team, but this year there are only a few shoe ins - would say Sexton, Phillips, North and Halfpenny will start, but then the rest is completely up in the air.

The pack is really tough to call, backrow especially - if Morgan didnt get injured I think he would have started.

Had a chat with some friends who I go and watch Saints games with and North has been spotted in talks with Mallinder and has a lot of family in the area. Was North born in England?

Halfpenny doenst miss a tackle, best defender of the lot for me. quality under the high ball, he is quick too. Best all round FB. Hogg is exciting in attack and Kearney is good all round but I'd take 1/2P every time.

Great signing for Sale, Arscott has been good this season probably Welsh's best player along with Mills.

I know Burns isn't a great defender but didnt think he was in IHumps league.

Freddie Burns

Tackles made - 54
Tackles missed - 21

Ian Humphreys

Tackles made - 45
Tackles missed - 21

That's not International class defence.

Some of iHumphs attempts this season have been awful!

if he could sort that out he would be a real top class FH as he controls a game very well and tactically is good. Defence a real issue though.

I'm getting confused with the Arscotts, Exeter have the better brother dont they. He has been quality.

Tom Wood the top tackler of 6N with 70. I thought Kelly Brown would get it. Picamoles dominates the attacking stats. Robshaw missed 9 tackles, only one less than Ashton.

Missed tackle stat doesn't really mean anything for me. A statistic doesn't make you a bad defender.

Sam Tuitupou top of the list and Kalamafoni in 5th and there is nothing wrong with their defence.

It does, if Wood makes 70 tackles then he has made 70 tackles.

What defines a missed tackle? Does May or Wade gassing someone a missed tackle?

The answer to that Steve is its so arbitrary. Someone who is everywhere and harassing people trying to charge kicks down and gets stepped is a missed tackle as is getting gassed.

Also some teams play a more retention style of rugby so have the ball and make less tackles due to having so much ball.

Stats don't work that well in rugby full stop but they can be an indicator.

May is ap player of month and has amazing run metres. Some of those were simple coasted in from halfway. Someone like wade for example may have made loads of yards of his own stepping and creation it's just so hard for stats to have validity in sport like rugby and soccer. Works in American sports.

Joe Allen of Liverpool had better pass stats than xavi and iniesta last year

It's the whole theres Lies and Statistics thing , some usefull others not.

Joe Allen had them stats as he played in a very set system at Swansea where he always had a pass to make.

Michael Carrick at Man Utd only had around a 87% pass stat but had something like 8 more assists than Allen. Just telling diffrence between a simple pass and killer pass.

I think all this hype is nonsense. You need a balanced squad. England had one bad game and Ireland blew
Away Wales.

Basically no other
Team bar England has ever won in the Sh you need a mix. Ireland had an awful championship yet they have players like Healy best Ryan heaslip sexton bod and possibly Zebo and Murray

Jocks have grant gray Hamilton brown laid law Scott Hogg possibly visser Maitland Denton

Always a few bolsters the blend is what's needed.

Talk of AWJ as captain ?! How he is
Not a 4 and really has had a good game against England and that's it.

Hinds Sheridan armitage all in the mix also

A few articles saying that Gatland might well have picked the following backrow to take on the Lions - Warburton, Tipuric, Falateau, Robshaw, Croft and Lydiate. Can't imagine he'd only take one no8.

Sure he was taking 34 players too - can't help feel that could be a bit light with 23 players needed in a match day squad and how many injuries there are in the sport these days,

Amazing how one game changes everything!

At same time I think getting hammered like we did will be good long-term for England as the last two games really showed that we are no where near the finished article and need to get more attack minded players involved.

I was not carried away after the NZ game and not carried away after Wales game.

I still think Lancaster is the wrong coach and think he will always be the pragmatist.

Barritt has not let England down but anyone with a brain can see he is a huge issue for our attack. Also he should have dropped Ashton and looked at players like billy v etc. we are building for a wc and as
Fans we would have accepted a team that was building rather than chasing results from players who will not get us there.

I praise him for getting launchbury in but that is about it

Agree with you there Mat about a lot of what you say about Lancaster, think he was a bit unlucky that Vunipola was injured in the week before the Italy game as he would have been involved there.

But he seems to be too loyal to some of his players - like you said Barritt really is an issue for our attack, a top defender, but you need a complete player for the 12 shirt, or someone to crash us over the gainline.

Also Alex Goode, he's been brought in as a second receiver and for creativity but I didn't see him create anything and the way the Welsh dealt with him last week showed they don't see him as an attacking threat.

To not see there was a problem with our wings was also a bad decision - May, Wade are on top form and would have added something for us in attack, anyone can see Brown isnt an international wing and that Ashton is way off form.

Tour to Argentina is very important for us in terms of blooding a lot of young players.

the Welsh appeal decision has been delayed again.

If that decision gets rescinded than its a joke. If anything they should be deducted more points!

Could see Lancaster playing a team of something like:

1. Vunipola
2. Hartley
3. Henry Thomas
4. Lawes
5. No idea if Parling goes.
6. Haskell (experience)
7. Kvesvic/Fraser
8. Morgan/Vunipola
9. Care
10. Burns
11. May
12. Twelvetrees
13. Barritt/Tomkins
14. Wade (leave Ashton at home)
15. Brown/Foden

I rad an article from SL the other day.

He stated he wants to build a winning mentality based on a strong defence (I'd say we have this).

From that he'll be looking to tweak to give us an attacking flair with minor adjustments (36 for Barritt etc).

It's a lot harder to get an attacking team with all new players and not ship bag fulls of tries and nobody is confident.

I think SL is doing a cracking job, I think he'll move on to the next part of his plan and we can see players like Wade, May etc tried out and bedded into the team.

Argentina are becoming a really good team, so I think there will be a need to keep some experienced heads there too, like Haskell, Barritt - with Lancaster I could see him playing Foden on one of the wings.

Kruis might do a job at no5, but isn't first choice at Sarries yet, can't think of many no5s around outside Parling.

Foden needs some form, he's nowhere near an England jersey at the min with Goode & Brown unlikely not to be Lions
