The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Walkabout, Covent Garden
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to the original Walkabout pub in London's Covent Garden, as it is set to close its doors at the end of the month.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Mark Ella or recent birthday boys Gibson and Glas a du above the bar.

Great try for Andrew Trimble- beautiful assist by Payne. 11-8; can Jackson kick it?

Paddy Jackson is 1 from 5 tonight. We still need Pienaar!
If only we had taken just one of those and we'd be level

It's over, we lost. 14-8. Paddy missed four out of five kicks at goal. Ahhhh- momentum. Such a capricious thing.
We didn't play badly tonight, just not enough accuracy- in Edinburgh raised their standards massively, it was the best I've seen them play. We actually improved quite a lot but we may have just missed out on a home semi.

You would not believe the timing of that power cut which plunged the whole of Belfast into darkness.
That Edinburgh performance was really good though. At least the bits I managed to see when the power came back on!
Still snowing here.

Just having a wee discussion with Himself on the subject of national songs. We are agreed that GSTQ is probably the most tedious 'tune' going. Watching the anthems before the Italy Brazil game, and enjoying 'Fratelli d'Italia' and then discovering that the Brazilian anthem is also a wonderful operatic bit of baroque magnificence. Love it, love it, love it.

The Italian National anthem is strange though. I always think the introduction doesn't really fit with the rest of the thing. It's like they play 2 separate tunes one after the other with no break.
I like it though.

Having to watch Scotland v Wales, regardless of the fact that this is maybe the most tedious, lacking in talent, football match EVER.

Ah, but you see, Mrs P, the italian anthem, similarly to Argentine, Brazilian, other countries with a european colonial past, have anthems that reflect the music of their late 18th/early 19th struggles for independence.

So...the change of style from intro to anthem is a musical metaphor representing the struggle for and eventual gaining of their independence from their colonial oppressors?
I just thought they liked to mix it up a bit.
Plus, it always sounds like it a bit of a race to the finish too.

No Mrs P, we are speaking of an operatic convention whereby there is an 'intro' followed by 'recetativo' or aria, depending on the scenario. But I just love it. Fratelli, d'Italia, Italia se destra ...

Verdi (V.E.R.D.I) was often used as a codeword during the risorgimento; as an acronym for "Viva Emmanuel, Re D'Italia". As his music was perceived to exemplify the growing movement towards italian nationalism. Possibly quite apart from his compositional intent...

Evening pub
and a towel for me please. Been out for a meal and a couple of drinks with a friend tonight. Took us twice as long to walk home as it normally does as it's still blowing a gale. And snowing. The snow is currently horizontal. My face is numb

Never thought of that explanation.
And the Argentine one is the same sort of thing right enough.
All makes sense now!

Long may the drubbings continue. The board needs these rockets up their bums to start making tough decisions. Get a proper Head Coach in and get rid of Appleyard as defence coach. Kingsley Jones at least wants the job and get Ringo in for the backs. Time to stop the rot.

Morning all.
We have "lecky" (clearly) but my poor folks lights went off again at midnight and there is no word when they might be reconnected.
Dad is just out of hospital and isn't all that well so I'm trying to decide if we disrupt him completely by trying to get him and mum moved up here somehow or if we sit it out and hope they will be back on supply again soon.
Poor MrP and kids have spent the last hour and a half digging out the car.
At least the snow isn't falling as fast now.

Just watched a little bit of Bayonne v Toulon. If you can watch it later, look for what the Bayonne 11 (I think) does to the Toulon ten (not St Jonny) right on HT. Great piece of work.

Car was under 4ft snow this morning. Thankfully it hasn't frozen, still work was a no-go and it took us 90 mins to clear the driveway so we could move the car.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Walkabout, Covent Garden
The snow here wasn't uniformly as deep as 4 feet but we had drifts higher than the Wheelie Bins!
My poor hubby is knackered between digging out our cars 2 days running and then digging out my folks driveway so we could get them to our car so we could bring them up here as they had no "lecky"!
We also dug out their neighbours.
Blooming hard work!
Of course, having manoeuvred my Dad and his dodgy hip and his crutches up their slippy driveway, into our "far to high too get into easily with a dodgy hip" car, cleared an even wider path to allow for Dad and his crutches to get from our car to our house, packed up all the stuff he needs for his post-op recovery and arranged the furniture so he could sit comfortably here, their blooming "lecky" came back on just as his backside hit the seat!
The way things have gone so far today we will reverse the whole elaborate process only for the lights to go off again as soon as we get him settled back home this evening!

Had a great day out with my big sis today. Haven't seen her since Xmas, and I found a tenner in a shop so I got us some lunch in a pub too. Nom! Just about to nip out and get some chips before the Blues/Treviso game.

Chiefs v Tigers started off second half brightly, gone off the boil a bit. Surprised to see the pitch in such good condition, given the weather over the last few days.

I really don't see O'Connell going with the Lions at this late stage of the piece. He would have to show some extraordinary form in the few matches left to really make that sort of impression.

Just seen the scores so far:
Munster 22 - 0 Connacht (FT).
Treviso 23 - 17 - still going - the match includes possible eye gouge on Lou Reed. definitely a citing there I think.
Leinster 3 - 10 Glasgow (still going)

I get worried when ASM have to start a match with Chaume,Cabello,Ric as front row, knowing that they can only be replaced by Zirakashvili,TiPaulo,Cotze, because Domingo, Kayser and Debaty are on holiday.

Just looking at flights for HC weekend. Boy have they shot up in price! Really should have sorted it sooner
If any of our NI regs are about this late, how easy is it to get from Belfast Intl to Belfast Central Rail Station? Can fly to Belfast for a third of the cost of getting to Dublin. And the flights are at times that mean we could take our time

Not too difficult Swanny, there's a shuttle bus to the City Centre I think and then I guess its about 15/20 minutes walk to the train station. To be honest, its probably about an hour to get to the train station.
But the international airport is a bit out of the city. Its much easier for connections to fly to Belfast City if possible. Because that has a train station adjacent which connects to Central Station. Thats like 5 minutes.
