The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Walkabout, Covent Garden
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to the original Walkabout pub in London's Covent Garden, as it is set to close its doors at the end of the month.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Mark Ella or recent birthday boys Gibson and Glas a du above the bar.

Morning all.
Apparently on the "UK Soundtrack Charts" #1 is Judy Garland's "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead". While number 2 is a WWE Wrestler's theme song (https://www.606v2.com/t42936-help-take-fandango-s-theme-song-to-number-1-in-the-charts#1981877 )

Morning, Pete. I heard that people are calling for the Beeb not to play 'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead' on the chart countdown on Sunday. I think it would be a disgrace if they didn't play it. All they're doing is reflecting what the public is buying, for better or worse, same as always. I don't understand the mentality of anyone who would buy it and who would celebrate someone's death, but all the same, it's in the charts. There have been thousands of terrible records in the charts over the years and the Beeb's played them all.

I'm more amused by the fact that they'll have to play a wrestler's theme tune too
I'm largely indifferent to Maggie T, I wasn't living here in the 80s so find it hard to emphasise with either the fans or the haters - in the same way that I find it hard to connect with either Christian fundamentalists or rabid atheists.

Ulp.
Just realised I've mentioned both religion and politics in the Pub.
Sorry all.

Sections of the media and the government are trying to airbrush history and acting like Thatcher was some sort of widely beloved, unifying Prime Minister. Crossed the line from tribute to hagiography.
"Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" reflects that the way she and the legacy she left to the UK are viewed by sections of the general public is rather more complicated, for better or worse.
I think it's important that that be acknowledged somewhere.

Exactly right, Notch. I thought it was wrong of David Cameron to stand outside Downing Street and talk about her as if she was universally loved. Not even the slightest suggestion that she was divisive. It wouldn't have been disrespectful is he'd said so - it was dishonest of him not to have said so. He spoke as the leader of his party when the moment called for him to speak as prime minister.

Perhaps (I didn't see that speech so can't really comment) - though in the Parliamentary debate he acknowledged that she was a polarising figure.
I'm going to be out of the country Wednesday - a good thing too as the funeral procession is going to make a right mess of traffic outside work.

The entire thing has been party political, and Labour have continued to be a massive disappointment in failing to counter-balance that.
If only they were a party of Glenda Jacksons and not Ed Millibands. The difference is a set of principles and a backbone.

That's all it needed, Pete - an acknowledgement that she was divisive.
Notch, the problem is that New Labour won the votes of plenty of people who had previously voted for Thatcher's Tories, and he knows how valuable those votes still are. Principles come a distant second to electability.

Anyways, on to more important stuff ...
What are people up to this weekend?
I've got a medieval banquet tonight , have bought myself a rather nice Black Knight costume. Lunch with a Kiwi friend tomorrow to pick up her present & card for the wedding I'm going to next Sat - she doesn't know I'm going back, I told her "someone at work is going to Chch". Though now she's trying to get me to go up to Kettering next Saturday as her partner's volleyball team is in the National Volleyball League final up there and they're trying to get a coachload of supporters together I may have to fess up.

Congrats on becoming an uncle again lucky.
Venue for the next pub - Grantham.
Only kidding
No real idea about the new gaff.
Pic nomination - Jacques Burger who makes his first start after 17 months out with an horrendous leg injury that required 6 ops.

Sugar soap is my new favourite discovery. Cleans anything! Dread to think what's in it but my walls are nice and clean ready for painting tomorrow
Ya'alright swanny.
We were using that stuff back in the 70s to scrub up walls prior to painting them. Very effective.
I'm going to totally redo my place over the next few months.
Do you wanna do mine as well? Badly needs doing...am going to have to tackle it once the weather gets warmer...that's my excuse
Afternoon All. Lovely day in the Diff. Am about to nip out and get some groceries and things.

Can I suggest photos of Margaret Thatcher (saviour of the Nation) and Margaret Thatcher (destroyer of industries).

Yes Lucky! We can have photos of Michael Foot, John Major, Neil Kinnock, Michael Hesseltine, Arthur Scargill, Cecil Parkinson, David Steele and David Owen, Tony Benn, Enoch Powell, General Galtieri, Kenneth Baker, and Gerry Adams!

Finchley and/or West Belfast.
Cari, the post-war Labour government was something we'll never see again. They put in place provisions for the most vulnerable that have survived longer than anyone could have hoped.

Shame isn't it Notch? One reason why I had to go private...on the upside of that I appear to be making progress so my appointments are less frequent which is good.

I'm not sure about that Notch...if the current govement, the yanks and North Korea keep things up we could get another post-war Labour goverment again sooner than you think .....

Marus Horan who is retiring from rugby should get a photo on the wall.
Decorated as he is I never really liked him. I always felt he was a passenger rather than a major player for Musnter and Ireland.
Nonetheless a true servant to Irish Rugby and deserves his pic.

Yer bollix stag Horan was a fantastic player in his pomp, brilliant in the loose, could outsprint most backs over 20 metres.
