The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Jonathan Davies (JD2), and all of the weekend's 6 Nations debutants above the bar!

Bore da.
Stag is the best travel agent ever. Talk about personal service, he even leant me a red hat!
I've had the best time ever in Dublin even though I got lost Saturday night and walked back to Bollixbridge from Coppers via Trinity Coll (twice) I'm not even sure how I managed to do that. Fantastic night with Gibbo mark 2, his Missus, Mikado and his Missus, the incomparable Micky T and his gay friends, Stag and Dreamer. My mates were taken to the collective busom like long lost pals.
Then if anything last night topped it. Sang till I'm hoarse with a guy and his guitar in the Auld Dublinner, then back to Coppers to watch the Super Bowl.
Hiraeth now though, I want to see my family. Going is nice so you can come back.
As to the game I really felt that no side deserved to lose. It was pulsating. The guys around us were true gents and there were a couple of young boys there with their Dads, 6N poetry. No Welshman should gloat about that match and no Irishman should be too disheartened, the French are in for a hell of a backlash.

Sounds like a good night was had last night Glas.
When I met you yesterday afternoon I didn’t expect you to be in it for the long haul after the game, fair play to you, an epic comeback at the death. Wonder where that inspiration came from…

Morning All.
Was great to catch up with Dreamer, Glas & his mates and the Irish regs yesterday. Pity it was just for a short time. Thanks for the Stag.
At the end of the last pub Stag posted links to a couple of articles. I have brought them across for easy reference.

Good to see you yesterday Rav. Wales and Ireland are the new England and France.
What is there to do in Dublin that doesn't involve drinking in pubs?

There are plenty of free of charge museums Glas, you can visit Trinity College and see the Book of Kells or just general sightseeing.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
You can’t cross Dublin without passing a pub. Apparently.
The Croke park tour is pretty good if you’re looking to kill a few hours, good value too. You could hop on the Dart out to Howth for a bit of scenery, and as Stag said, there are loads of museums not far from you that are free entrance.

I’m ok today Rav, in fact I was ok yesterday morning too, I was feeling better than I looked. Not for the first time
Myself and Stag were talking to Chris, he mentioned it was your daughters birthday yesterday, Stag asked him if it was a significant one, he said “I don’t know, I’m sure I’ll find out from Rav later”
Dead pan, gas fella.

Here's a question, is self moderation possible on this site like on old 606.
So the author of the thread can remove abusive/harmful posts.
It is one of the few features of 606 that I really really miss.

Morning, and mark
I read an interesting fact over the weekend. It is that Ireland have never beaten Wales, France or England in the 6N with BOD missing from the team. I would never have thought that.
Anyway, while I'm not going to post a link to it, there is an hilarious article by Jonathan Liew in the DT today about some of the 6N TV pundits.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Asbo I actually didnt see much of the match as I ate a sandwich with out of date meat in it which had me very poorly.
However I saw Scotlands try call that went to TMO and no try was the right decision (though that was the TMOs call). I heard George had a poor game though. It appears to be general consensus.
I though the officials in the Wales v Ireland game were poor enough but rather consistently poor for both. A lot of offside was missed and they failed to keep a lid on the game. Both Tommy Bowe and James Hook deliberately and cynically slapped down balls during a passing move - neither were penalties. The breakdown seemed a bit of a lottery. Not a disaster from them but they should have done a better job overall.

As - did you have anything specific in mind with reference to Mr Clancy?
I have to say, I didn't really notice him during the game; but then again I wasn't noticing much of anything by the time the game kicked off.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I will say this now, great second try for Wales.
Power from North in the contact and then the offload out the back door and a superb out to in line from JD2.
Commentators criticising the defence, but hard to defend against that. Excellent try for Wales.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Forgetting that he was still playing penalty advantage for the Laidlaw no-try incident would be my major gripe. I thought he was generally poor at the breakdown, which didn't do either side nor the game any favours. Foden's tackle on Rennie with the swinging arm catching the ball/deliberately knocking the pass forward* was a marginal call for me, could've gone either wayHound_of_Harrow wrote:As - did you have anything specific in mind with reference to Mr Clancy?

Argh, nothing worse than food poisoning. Can you guide me thru the rules behind the no-try decision? Downward pressure is obviously key, but I didn't think it had to be with just the hand, thought the wrist would equally do?red_stag wrote:Asbo I actually didnt see much of the match as I ate a sandwich with out of date meat in it which had me very poorly.

Asbo - I didn't think any downward pressure was made with the wrist.
My take on it was that the Scottish guy came close but didn't manage to make downward pressure. First angle it looks a good try but from the side angle it looked to me that no pressure was made. English boy uses his chest to ground ball.

I don't think "downward pressure is involved any more.
They must just have decided he didn't get the first touch.
I think he did.
I wasn't sure whether Clancy had decided anvantage was over when they kicked the ball on or if he just forgot in all the waiting for the TMO.

I did see on Twitter that he had been cited. It's the first time I've seen the 'tackle'.
Dave Pearson needs a serious talking to by the IRB.
His recommendation goes against everything they have said about spear tackles.

He even describes a tip tackle, then recommends yellow. For me, the fact that the ball had long gone only made it worse.

That's my point lucky, he says that he's tipped him beyond horizontal and has dropped him. He HAS TO follow that by recommending a red card to Barnes.
Really poor work from Pearson, he needs taking to task.

If you don't need downward pressure any more, then Whitehouse must have decided that wee Greig didn't touch the ball, which would be a howling mistake?MrsP wrote:I don't think "downward pressure is involved any more.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Found it:
I think we're in 22.1(b) territory, so "presses down on it (the ball)" becomes key?
22.1 GROUNDING THE BALL
There are two ways a player can ground the ball:
(a) Player touches the ground with the ball. A player grounds the ball by holding the ball and touching the ground with it, in in-goal. ‘Holding’ means holding in the hand or hands, or in the arm or arms. No downward pressure is required.
(b) Player presses down on the ball. A player grounds the ball when it is on the ground in the in-goal and the player presses down on it with a hand or hands, arm or arms, or the front of the player’s body from waist to neck inclusive.
I think we're in 22.1(b) territory, so "presses down on it (the ball)" becomes key?

Yeah,
I think you're right enough Asbo!
It was a strange one though as from some angles it looked like a pretty definate try and from others it looked like a pretty definate no-try.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Right, game finished.
Wales were good value for the win. They played the better rugby I feel, BUT, I cannot see that Ferris tackle on Evans at the end is a penalty. It's not a spear/tip tackle. Very unfortunate to lose to that.
Having said that Ireland have a problem. They remind me of a little of Northampton Saints last season. By that I mean they have a great plan A, which works 90% of the time, but when it doesn't work, they do not seem to have a plan B.
Ulster, Leinster and Munster have blown teams away with their intensity at the breakdown in recent months. Yesterday, Wales matched the Irish intensity at the contact area, and Ireland had no answer. Nobody had enough smarts out there to say 'ok, we might have to approach this differently'.
Ireland have the players to have won that match, but they made poor tactical decisions throughout.
North, JD2, Phillips and Ryan Jones were all excellent for Wales.
This could be a real classic 6 Nations tournament.
